Anatoli-Kagari9 Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 Is it really the same thing? I have used the auto updater with 1.2.3, but 1.2.4 is certainly a much bigger update. I wonder if it would be better to make a clean install? Flight Simulation is the Virtual Materialization of a Dream...

159th_Viper Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 I wonder if it would be better to make a clean install? Always better to have a clean install from scratch. That is, if your ISP is decent enough to allow you to download the entire install quickly. At 9.34 GB it's quite large, but if you're lucky enough to be on fibre it only takes 20-odd minutes to download. If your speed is poor then auto-update and hope nothing goes wonky :) Novice or Veteran looking for an alternative MP career? Click me to commence your Journey of Pillage and Plunder! Grim_Smiles Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 I'd recommend the clean install. I set both torrent of DCS install and the autoupdater to go while I went to work, figuring I'd use one or the other. Checked them remotely and torrent finished much faster. Auto update took hours and at the end it failed, said something about a hash mismatch. So the decision was made for me. HiJack Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 The way I do the updates is always like this: 1. Start downloading all new full versions. 2. While downloading, keep on playing current version :D 3. When all new full versions is downloaded and the time is right to switch I do the following: a) renaming DCW World game folder to DCS World_123 b) renaming the DCS folder in Saved Games to DCS_123 c) Start the DCS World installer and install to D:\DCSWORLD d) Install A-10C module e) Install all other modules f) start DCS World new version for first time g) recreate all my option settings using the GUI h) exit the GUI i) recreating all my assignments using ExamDiff Pro 4. Start Single player and test Su-25T quick mission for FPS 5. Start Multiplayer, logon, and change the connection options to LAN No need to uninstall anything. No need to reactivate anything. 138th.Jack

lennycutler Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 I tried the auto update...It said it was successful...but...all of my modules were not updated...in fact DCS would not let me fly first person in most of my mods (BS2, A-10C, P-51D)...and reflected on the Spash page that all of my Mods, including FC3 were the prior version. I downloaded all the Torrent files for all of my mods. I installed each one. I got activation errors on FC3...insisted I needed Lock On...which I thought I had already installed....and BS1...which I thought previously I was safe to uninstall. So. I installed Lock On again...I installed BS1 again...and had to manually activate it. Finally, almost got everything working except for BS2...which did not accept my serial number. I did the registry delete for BS2 activation, per the Forum...then redownloaded BS2 using the upgrade International Key...and thank God...it all worked. Now here is my Beef...Dear ED.....I thought the AutoUpdater would not fail again to screw up my system....but it put me through 2 hours of extra work. Please ED, Fix the autoupdater....or just plain tell us not to use it for any major update....and please give us the proper procedure to make sure that all of our Mods come back to life.. Question - When is it ever going to be safe to delete the BS1 file?...and I assume it will never be safe to delete Lock On folder. I frankly don't mind a complete re-install...but the re-activation process is mind numbing. What is the proper procedure to ensure that everything I already own...comes back to life updated without me having to get re-activation problems - (e.g. - serial number not recognized, no hardware code etc.) Sorry for the rant...but this is the most frustrating part of working with this excellent software. IJammer Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Updating DCS seems like a major headache... I just can't understand why it is so complicated and involves so many procedures. Ok for PC literate bods, but not all of us have degrees in computer studies! I also use iRacing, a subscription based race car sim... they do regular updates; some of them quite large (the last one was 3Gb). When you enter the simulator splash screen the first page has a warning box telling you that you can't race until you have updated the sim... 'Press to Update' That's all you have to do... press a button and then give the updater permission (Windows OS) to continue. Why can't DCS do that? Perhaps ED needs to go see how they do it. I also get +84 FPS locked solid with iRacing... DCS drops to 10 FPS sometimes... brilliant flight sim, but something wrong here? :(
arteedecco Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Hmm... I haven't tried out my modules yet... soon precious ... soon! Your feedback is valid, but things are getting better though your experience today may be not so good (similar to 1.2.3). Hang in there gents. 'Press to Update' That's all you have to do... press a button and then give the updater permission (Windows OS) to continue. Why can't DCS do that? When you launch DCS for the first time each day it checks to see if there is an update, all you have to do is click "OK." This is not a complicated process at all. Sure speeds are slow right now, but such is life when something is in demand. Perhaps ED needs to go see how they do it. I also get +84 FPS locked solid with iRacing... DCS drops to 10 FPS sometimes... brilliant flight sim, but something wrong here? :( Comparing iRacing to DCS is completely asinine. You have a small race track with limited physics and you compare it to an enormous map, in comparison, with a whole lot more physics going on. Sorry, but your comparison doesn't fly... Next thing you will see is someone comparing DCS with Atari64 or Sega Genesis games. Win 10 Pro 64Bit | 49" UWHD AOC 5120x1440p | AMD 5900x | 64Gb DDR4 | RX 6900XT
IJammer Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Well... I must be imagining all the problems people are having installing the 1.2.4 update with the multitude of posts and proposed work-arounds on here! Well, granted iRacing is not looking at such a large virtual world, but a screen can only display one portion of that at any given time and the DCS graphic FPS fails on the close up detail stuff... iRacing holds up? Now I understand that DCS is using an antiquated 32bit GFX engine and can only utilise one core of a quad core CPU (64bit)... so perhaps it will improve when the 64bit 'Edge' graphics engine is utilised... I certainly hope so. I have a quad core 64bit CPU, 8Gb ram, 650 watt PSU and a 7950 GFX card with 3Gb DDR5 ram and still DCS is dropping down to 10FPS... <wot> Not exactly top of the tree spec, but it should cook DCS better than what I am getting with low to middle graphics options selected!
