why charge more for a terrain tool that people can use to enhance the game? SDKs are given away free unless there is commercial gain invovlved in which case a license is required. Check out Cryengines SDK, its free to download and use until you start charging for any work created with it.

Anyone serious about map creation would buck up for those tools, which look quite powerful...

I wouldn't spend $100 to. Some of us are not able to just fling a hundred dollars around, financially. If you want good content, don't limit good developers.

If this means that terrain created for DCS WWII will work with other aircraft in DCS World, I'll back this project.

Its worth more than 1$ IMHO....

IMHO, this EDGE SDK will be sooner/later available for the whole community. It doesn't make sense to me to offer the SDK only for a limited group of people instead the whole community. It shouldn't be a privilege to use it, it should be ED's interest to make this SDK a tool to make whole DCS World more attractive for as much people as possible...

Hopefully SDK will be released to the public later, limiting it to the Kickstarter backers only isn't very wise.

But I think it could work if the SDK was available to the backers for limited time, let's say six months. As a "thank you" from the team.

OK, so, if the SDK is going to be released in about a month, does this mean the lid finally comes off with regard to the secrecy of EDGE technical features?

Sure, as long as you sign the NDA.

i think the EDGE SDK can be "signed" to 3rd Parties after release. Not sure if SDK can be release to public as was the 3DS Max plugin or Modelviewer.

The water looks great, and look at those boulders and rocks
Very nice water indeed and inviting to U-boats. Looking at that video Ilya posted, I so want that phone.

Come to think of it; this may finally get me into 3D modelling, so this project is worth every buck spent.

What kind of program would I need for 3D modelling ... would Blender do?

You pretty much nailed it there cichlidfan ... nice find, though I will probably go with a German-build "Bakelit Telefon".

A little over budget, but ... http://www.ebay.de/itm/neuwertiges-W48-altes-Telefon-antik-Post-Bakelit-W-48-Fernsprecher-wie-Neu-/200968376111.

The 3D-program you mention is definitely over my budget SkateZilla; I have the (30-day free) 3ds Max 2010 32-bit demo installed, but don't know what to do with half of those buttons.

Since EDGE is 64-bit(?), is there a big difference in model result if you use a 64-bit versus 32-bit 3D-program? Please excuse my ignorance.

Amazing what kind of quality models you can find for free ... take this Kübelwagen for example.

In the video it sounds like you can import objects and the SDK will convert them to be DCS ready. Does this mean the ED plugins wont be required and (even better) you wont require a copy of 3DS Max?

The SDK does not have its own modeling tools.

You will need to import a 3D model created elsewhere.

I don't get it. $1 pledges don't have alpha access but they have access to this? Should be at least $10+

The amount of time and effort people put into this SDK is surely worth something non-monetary.

Portions of landscape design, especially 3D modeling for objects and 2D art for landscape textures, require a lot of pre-existing skill and experience. If we limit terrain making to people who put in a lot of money into the project, especially so close to the KS campaign closing, we'd be shutting off a huge crowd of potential contributors. Everybody loses.

On the other hand, we can't just freely release the tools to the public for obvious reasons.

OK, so, if the SDK is going to be released in about a month, does this mean the lid finally comes off with regard to the secrecy of EDGE technical features?

This is the landscape editor. All its features will indeed be revealed.

However the ability to compile the final map and to let tanks drive or planes fly over the new landscape will not be released out. So, many features that relate to the terrain's implementation within the game will not be a part of the SDK.

REALLY want to back this project, any succes whit paypal yet?

The page is ready, putting together the instructions and the news item and so on.

Well I need to sign it. Plz where ?

We'll have a backer discussion about this once the campaign ends. We'll figure out what we're doing, when we're doing it, who's doing it, and then we'll deal with NDAs.

We don't have the SDK ready yet, and it'll be some time before there's anything for anyone to sign.

Would it be possible to use this editor to expand the edges of an already existing map? I'm thinking of how much we want just a few airbases in Southern England. I'm thinking that maybe instead of creating a wholly new map, we could make the existing map larger.

Does this mean that maps will always have to be submitted to ED or RRG to be released? (for quality control etc.) Or is map compilation just something that will be made available at a later date when it is ready for the public.

Does this mean if I made a map of Mars it would get turned down outright and I would never be able to use it in DCS?

Could you elaborate a bit? What else will be needed to make new, fully functional map for DCS World/WW2? If SDK isn't enough, then what's the point of releasing it?

The point of releasing the SDK is so that maps can be made faster by the community than RRG can make themselves, without giving all the tools to make it functional. This will let them put more attention to the aircraft. Enough will be provided to make the land, but the final conversion process of it to let it plug into DCS/DCS WWII will be done by ED or RRG. This would act as quality control, which is in my opinion a good thing.

SDK is a tool. Like a wrench, so what else beside the wrench do I need to build a car?

A lot. You would need a 3d modeling program, a 2d texturing program and a couple of years of experience in both of these and modding/game design.

And this is still not an open platform, I'm pretty sure the only ones considered would be artists with a hefty background.

Nothing is absolutely free. Even for us as third party developers we have to buy Max, Photoshop, Visual Studio, etc. You really have to be dedicated.
