At the current rate things are going, there will be no 7th gen jet fighters, as no will be able to afford them.

And lazorz. Lots of lazorz :D

Yea, that's the other thing I was thinking- put 4*pi steradians of IRST on it, and just add some gimballed, high-power solid state lasers. Dogfights will be gunz and lazorz only. :D

Maybe by 7th gen they're going to replace manned fighters with cheap disposable high mach 9G+ capable drones that can be produced in numbers that allow for swarm attacking.

Maybe the USAF can finally adopt some Soviet thinking and use the shotgun instead of the scalpel. Okay, maybe a shotgun full of scalpels.

Warning: Nothing I say is automatically correct, even if I think it is.

Ever heard of CBU-97? :D

is that a 6th gen ?

and is it the 7th gen ?

Wow, I'd never heard of that movie before now. EDI is actually frighteningly close in its basic shape to what I was imagining (minus the HAL 9001, and ridiculous hypersonic dogfighting, of course).

Heathen!

EDI is the Enhanced Defence Intelligence that oversees and operates the second Normandy's weapons, electronic warfare etcetera in the Mass Effect trilogy. And as the coup de grâce: voiced by Tricia Helfer.

"I enjoy the sight of humans on their knees..."

Any other EDI is just a pale pretender. :P

A more realistic answer...

LM never finishes the F-35, but elevates it's "gen number" every 20 years.

Awaiting: DCS F-15C

nice. :D

Now, how about adding some rear firing missiles and auto-targeting turrets for taking out targets at any angle from the ship?

There won't be any fighter in 2050! Only drones...

And you mean drones can't attack other drones?

That's like saying there won't be any fighters, only bombers...

I fully share your view. In future Drones become multirole. And there will be no more manned fighters.

I don't think it will be a case of 'no more manned fighters'. Signal interruption is a real threat to drones, so unless we surrender control of the craft to an AI, we'll have to have vehicles with humans in the cockpit, at least as a reserve force.

the unmanning of some current aircraft would lead to a higher lvl of air superiority...no more human "G" limits...we already build stuff far more capable then ourselves...this is why Skynet wins the war....manned F-16 vs ummaned F-16 = dead man

It only takes two things to fly, Airspeed and Money.

I always wondered why we dont put our fighter gatlin/vulcan cannons on a gimble...even 10 or 15 degrees of computer control would stop you from having to be perfect "nose on lead" to score a kill shot....just get it within the gimble limits and let the computer do the rest....

I think the F-22 and F-35 may be the only aircraft in our inventory that have the computing power to do that. It would take not only target tracking logic, which is pretty simple, I think, but also motion prediction logic. That's no where near as simple. Think of all the things that have to be calculated and predicted in a high-g turning fight. Even if the target is only 10° off bore, the computer has to figure out where it is, which direction it's going and with what velocity, and predict, based on previous path, where it will be going half a second to a second later. Not exactly a simple thing to calculate in real time.

But yeah, that capability would make a lot of sense.
