At 20,000 feet, an F-15 flying Mach 0.9 can pull about 6.1 Gs and turns 12 deg per second. At Mach 1.2, that drops to 4.8 Gs and 7 degrees per second. What's you're definition of "cranking?" A loftless miniZAP AIM-120 fired at 20,000 feet and Mach 0.9 travels 20.7 km in 34.4 s. The same missile fired at Mach 1.2 travels 22.5 km in 35.5 s. Note: a 33% launch speed advantage (including advantage of not having to overcome the "Mach barrier") translates into less than 9% range advantage, due to the 2nd-power drag penalty felt by the missile at the higher speed. Now consider F-pole. Immediately after launch, the Mach 1.2 fighter begins a 60-degree turn to the side, which takes him 8.6 seconds. In this time he simultaneously closes 2.7 km towards the target. After this, he keeps the target 60 degrees off his nose, closing an additional 5.1 km in the remaining 26.9 s of his missile's flight. His F-pole is thus (22.5 - 2.7 - 5.1) = 14.7 km. The Mach 0.9 fighter after launch turns 60 degrees in 5 seconds, in which time he closes 1.2 km. Keeping the target at 60 degrees, he then closes an additional 4.2 km in the remaining 29.4 s. His F-pole is thus (20.7 - 1.2 - 4.2) = 15.3 km. Now, you can say that the Mach 1.2 fighter will decelerate after launch to improve his F-pole, but then, the Mach 0.9 fighter can do the same. The shooter's deceleration is basically a function of his starting speed, with the slower fighter having a closure advantage. For all the Rmax advantage enjoyed the supersonic shooter, he is still facing a fundamental F-pole disadvantage that he is going to have to solve one way or another. The problem is that the drag on the missile worsens with the square of the speed, but the closure increases linearly with the speed - and this is true *no matter what angle you're flying*. So, if you have to choose between a supersonic shot for longer-range, or a subsonic shot with shorter range - all things being equal, your F-pole is probably better with the latter.2 points

I present this custom wallpaper to the A-10 Sim-Mod team.. I think I speak for most people when I say that you guys have brought an amazing gift to the lock on community. We all appreciate the hard work you guys put into this to make it one of the best mods available for the game. Thank you and S!1 point

Well, i was flying F4 multiplayer campaign over a 64 ISDN line back in 2001. Flanker multiplyer was rotten ugly. We experienced the 'Internal Flanker error' in 90% of our online missions (dogfight was better). Lomac online was a mess in the beginning, big warping all over the scenery, flying dogfight was mere impossible. It got better with the patches and matured with FC - but you still need a better connection than in F4:Allied Force campaign with same number of pilots. But that is all history now that BS will hit the disk sooner or later, so let's stay on topic. :)1 point

Do not concentrate so much on attempting to spot the missile - you know it has been launched - concentrate on defeating it as soon as possible. Personally I think trying to visually acquire a missile fired BVR is just wasting precious time. Must be said that I'm no Fighter Pilot (Too cozy in my Toad-Pit), but when I do on odd occasion strap a Fast-Jet to my back I'm surprised at how fast things happen when the going gets Rough - every second counts. With SARH the Bandit has to keep you locked - so the easiest way to defeat the missile you know is inbound is to break his lock - assuming you're on the defensive to begin with (Oh Fcuk - where did he come fromscenario). Rather rely on your RWR to tell you what you need to know and focus on ways of defeating the missile! As GG says: Pick your battles. Better to RTB with no kills and you still being alive ;) En soos bo al genoem is: Oefen, Oefen en Nogmaals Oefen, Ou Maat :D1 point

Well there are other tactics & defenses to employ. You may be able to break the lock with strategic jammer use. Veteran SU flyers work together in a little game of "Bait the Eagle" One guy presents himself as the target to draw them in, while another lies in wait to take them out- or at least induce a bit of panic that can be exploited. Again- battling AI negates (or at least marginalizes) the usefulness of the majority of realistic tactics. Their ability to display sheer idiocy while simultaneously posessing 100% situational awareness is breathtaking...1 point

What?? I would never do such a thing :D Oh look, a froggy in my HTD... Splat!1 point

Aye-recorded with 1.12a :) As I said - applies to AI only. Trust me - in a Multiplayer environment against a skilled opponent you do not want to be on the receiving end of an Adder. Usually the first indication you have of a Bandit is when the Missile goes active and by then it's just about to crawl up your tailpipe so there's not a hell of a lot you can do except to bury your head between your legs and Kiss your Ass goodbye............ Reminds me of a Squad Flight where 159th_Fudd vapourized a 4-Ship of T-Frogs shortly after take-Off with R-77's. Trust me - one second you're o.k. - the next your RWR lights up like a Christmas tree and before you have a chance to say WTF you're toast. Good Times :D1 point

I'm glad folks are finding the chart useful. One thing to mentioned to those new to SPO 15 is that you need to be aware of the fact that when you bank at 45 degrees for more than 8 seconds you'll loose the radar painting you. Same with climbing and diving. This is due to the limit the RWR detectors. I find that with R27s you must be reacting to the other AC thats trying to guide the missile on to you. Force him to go beyond the gimbal limits of his radar and the missile will loose lock. If someone shoots a 120 or R77 then you want to focus on the missile; make it work hard and loose energy. I have another chart for ground / ship based threats. If anyone is interested PM me.1 point

Replying to your kind request ;) http://www.frugalsworld.com/falcon4/kevin.shtml Kevin Klemmick wanted alive! should ED announce. http://www.mobygames.com/developer/shots/developerId,17954/developerShotId,2231/ (I think it's the Kevin Klemmick) I can't rep the guy but certainly I can glorify His name. Don't read the article because it makes people want to try Flacon 4 again :devil_2: Edit: There's also a separate Interview about the Player Bubble as you can see here http://www.frugalsworld.com/falcon4/index.shtml1 point

The Pics are from Lo/FC with edit xxx.vpp files to use new Textures on Ground in Layers for dirt, stripes... . Made this Pics also with full Planar Setings (NV Self Shadow Bug in the FC/DX8 Engine) but the shadows are fine! How do you made the tga Overlays over the Apron Texture?1 point

Google for Kevin Klemmick and Microprose. Interview: http://www.frugalsworld.com/modules/zmagazine/article.php?articleid=96 Designer's notes (esp #6 on page 2): http://www.frugalsworld.com/modules/zmagazine/article.php?articleid=126&page=0 And from an interview with Gilman Louie: http://www.f4hq.com/default.php?page=article1&nr=1&id=563 " RazorBlade: Some people think that the big investments that were made to develop Falcon 4.0 were the reason of the financial problems of Microprose. Is that true? Chopstick: Not really. Looking back, I think it was a combination of factors. Product delays really hurt us. We had several big titles that were over a year late and a small company just cannot operate without regular hits. I also believe today that we made a poor decision of not pursuing the PC action and console market as a part of our product strategy so we were caught flat-footed when the market shifted on us."1 point

Can track ARH (AIM-120, R-77 etc etc). Cannot track SARH (AIM-7, R27-ER, R27EM etc etc). And not even a prayer when it comes to the R27-ET, and as a Toad-Pilot, my personal favourite, the R-73!1 point

Then are Ah-64 and A-10 actually developed over the old TFCSE engine? <GGTharos>, thanks you for the info!! I've read somewhere that the latest A-10A blocks are able to carry LANTRIN pod's - it would be nice if we could use them in DCS. Regards!!1 point
-
Despite poor climb rate, fuel loads and reduced range it's not a problem for simulation with rather tight scenery and I believe this is the reason why ED has focused on CAS missions in first DCS modules. The fighters may come later after developing new engine implementing wider range of terrain.1 point

I think there's another source at airpower, but it's not handy currently. Here's the relevant content:1 point

Let's see ... look in here. :) http://www.airpower.maxwell.af.mil/airchronicles/apj/apj03/sum03/ireton.html This information is older than 2003. This means Suite 2 may be getting more or less things than what's reported there.1 point

We had greater then 30+ A-10 Pilots at once and many more flew any number of sorties over the weekend. As you know our goal was to bring attention to the SIM-MOD team’s exceptional efforts. In this regard we sincerely hope that as a result of the event we both raised awareness of and encouraged others to download and install this outstanding A-10 modification for LockOn. There was no noticeable impact on FPS or performance that could even remotely be attributed to the SIM-MOD A-10 model for LockOn. Any FPS or performance problems we had, while noticeable were slight and likely due to the large number of ground targets present in the mission AFAIK. No major problems were reported. All in all it was a great weekend. Given that this was a single AC specific event 30+ at once is outstanding. Warthog Weekend was a fitting tribute to the SIM-MOD team and their gift to everyone who shares in our passion for LockOn. Moving forward we at the 104th will host frequent "special community driven" events as often as possible to pay homage and tribute to those that have gone above and beyond for the sake of the entire community. From all of us at the 104th thanks again to the SIM-MOD team for all the hard work! We love the new model and skins! Skies the limit, Community Rules! As I recall, from the initial release to the release of the last patch and every patch release in between, there has been a chorus of ED's customers giving constructive criticism about various flaws in the modelling of LO. Nobody is bemoaning the fact that ED didn't get it right the first time. The problem is that they STILL haven't got it right and there are only a few of us clinging to hope that there will be another patch. Your reference to the ET and "common sense" is arguable. But the main thing is that ED did something about it, unlike other aspects of the modelling. Who said anything remotely involving cars? The main point there was that you don't have to write code to see that something is modelled incorrectly in a sim. And no one that paid money for the product should be expected to keep quiet about its flaws. GG, I know you, probably more than anyone else, have given ED results from your research and testing. I hope ED never responded to you with, "We haven't seen you attempt to write a flight sim ... let alone attempt to 'get it right."1 point

That's just great. Sounds very interesting, but just for better picture... may we see it, some new screenshots of the editor would be nice.1 point

gen Hi guys, I have questions about the weather. In real life there are different visibilities face to face to the sun and with sun behind me. It can be hard in mornings, late afternoons in a shiny and snowy/hazy weather: visibility can be 2-300 m or less. After a 180 degree turn it can be 10-12 kms. It is typical in helo-like low levels, maybe at LOFC's 4-5000 m altitudes it ain't a factor. Will it be modelled, I think in the next engine? THX!1 point

Adding on to what kuky ask, please add the ability to add AA and AF, as well as V-sync within the lock on options rather than forcing the graphics card in the properties menu.1 point

The campain will be more like in LB2 with the phase line. It will move back and forth depinding on the status of missions completed. I was told the MB is closer to JF-18. not as hard to deal with as in ArmA. I am one of thoes guys waiting on the AH64 as well..1 point

EB1 - you're dashing my quiet hopes at every turn :-) No gusting wind, no new Su-25 model ... Oh well - I'll just have to content myself with the Ka-50, new map, new ME, new units, improved AI etc.... Life is hard.1 point

Only the oldest Hellfire missiles (AGM-114A) smoke like that. They were replaced by the smokeless AGM-114C before the Apache ever even saw combat. All of the newer Hellfires also have smokeless motors as well. So if smoke ever gets modeled, so too must the dismal failure rate of the AGM-114A. ;)1 point
