Once you've seen these two videos, you will understand why I think they deserve a sepparate topic. 30 minutes of cockpit sound and video, startup to shutdown. Clicks, clocks, hydraulics, fans... unedited, you hear it all. First one is front view, and second one is back view showing the pilot. View of the instruments and radio sounds would make it perfect, but it's amazing anyway. It's also good for ED reference if at some time they decide to model the 29 :) And I should say it right away - don't try this stuff in LO ;) I will try to get more info on the flight, but I can tell you that it is an Yugoslav MiG-29, and the time frame is most likely '97-'98. Without further ado, http://avijacija.net/video/mig29_yugoslav_air_force.avi http://avijacija.net/video/mig29_yugoslav_air_force2.avi :joystick:4 points

We've now gotten into the resources discussion, debating ED's priorities in developing Black Shark. I will expand on this a bit... First of all, developing the Ka-50 model and developing the AI are in general independent tasks. Most of the work going into the aircraft model involves the dynamics programmers that do not otherwise specialize in AI development anyway. If there was no work for them to do on the Ka-50, they would most likely be developing models of other flyables, not AI. Furthermore, in developing Black Shark, it's important to keep in mind what I would call the basic design concept. Black Shark is hopefully a first release in what ED hopes will be a line of products in which their technology will be continually developed. Much of the work done in Black Shark was with an eye toward the future. Also, remember that ED is trying to develop for the needs of their military contracts as well. Military simulations demand scripting ability over dynamic environments and are certainly not interested in random behavior. Military sims, at least ones ED is contracted for, also benefit from deep modeling of individual units in the virtual world rather than large-scale virtual combat not directly connected to the pilot. Keeping the design concept in mind, ED put their AI development resources essentially into the following needs for Black Shark: 1) new Mission Editor that is flexible both for the user and for the team to continually develop; 2) re-coding the AI definitions to include individual weapons modeling per units and moving that code to more easily accessible LUA format; 3) re-designing the helicopter AI for stand-off tactics and target prioritization (doesn't mean it's perfect); 4) designing sensor-dependent target detection logic for AI aircraft. This is certainly not the end of it. If more programmers and/or more time was available, I'm sure other AI features would have been developed as well. As we speak, ED is probably working on new ground AI logic, at least basic self-defense measures when under attack. In the longer-term, of course ED hopes to develop both the ME and AI to a much more powerful and flexible system. Earlier in this thread, I was just curious to hear what other flight sims have done with AI, especially ground AI compared with Black Shark. IMO, every sim has had to make significant compromises somewhere, but I'm afraid we tend to forget those and focus on the things that worked well. Perhaps small maps? Static unit nodes, player-centered behavior (not independent AI), limiting world "bubbles", etc.?2 points

To avoid placebo effect, I write this after 2 months of test. It would be long enough for personal review. Frankly, writing something long in English is quite complicated job for me so it was deferred until now. Like it or not, Black Shark cannot load everything on RAM so it reads many textures, models and sounds during flight due to large map and so many objects even after long loading time. Playing BS about 4 weeks with ordinay HDD, I could feel -micro or mass- hiccups from HDD access in many situation, Initial load of textures, emerging cityscape textures, panning fast with TrackIR4, and large battles going on etc etc and those were so much annoying. So I decided to try SLC SSD to avoid occasional(or often) micro-hiccups and bought MTRON SLC SSD 16G at about $140. Result was noteworthy. Average FPS is about the same(and it should be) but overall smoothness in every situation is uncomparable to that of HDD. After 4 weeks of SSD flying, I forgot the differences between HDD and SDD so I tried a few HDD flight again and OOOOOPS, it almost made me not wanna fly this beautiful shark. It s**ked. In conclusion, If you invested enough money on CPU, RAM, VGA and more importantly all those flight peripheral devices but without SSD, I confidently recommend SSD. It's so Smooth during entire flight. I just don't wanna fly BS in HDD. Complete silence and shorter loading screen are just minor bonuses. The only downside of my SSD purchase is I was quite doubtful so I didn't buy 32G SSD!! I'm so much a fps&smoothness-hungry sim-freak so you can trust me. :D ----- All I am talking about is SLC SSD, not MLC SSD which is cheap but not so much better than fast HDDs. 3rd generation MLCs are good but they are still not in retail and their controller tech is premature. I'm looking forward to 3rd gen SAMSUNG MLC SSD but for gaming experience, SLC SSD is way to go, especially in BS & GTA4(friend's report).1 point

Yes, only the second one has the startup sequence. You only see the pilot's face, and not the instruments :( but you hear the sounds :)1 point

I have been collecting parts for an A-10A model for over 5 years all it takes is patience and money lol a lot of money. I have helped Gus with dimensions on panels if you have a question let me know and i may be able to help even I don't have some measurements1 point

I just checked now, and I have 146Mb of 3D Views and detailed info on all the panels.. But I can't post that much info here, so P M me your e-mail or your adress, and I'll either e-mail or snail-mail it to you.. Even got the Flight Manual for the A-10A model in this folder somewhere.. Link to A-10 Slideshow: http://img516.imageshack.us/slideshow/player.php?id=img516/2218/1235592530gb6.smil1 point

I cant i don't have the time for multiplayer. I play in small sessions and i pause frequently some times for an hour just to finish a mission. Multiplayer is not an option for me. Just to be fair i like that your wingman can report airborne threats to you.1 point

Here are my 2 cents: If AI is of utmost importance to you, Black Shark will most likely not impress you, in some cases even disappoint. It has some impressive features regarding the detection logic of AI air-units, but appart from seeing them at your wingman those will hardly be noticed while playing. The general AI of wingmen is ok but not really spectacular. They are unable to fly close to the ground (about 100m or so is the minimum) or to utilize cover. Sometimes they will show a good display of self-preservation, engaging stand off and refusing to put themselfe in harms way, sometimes they will charge into their doom. Compared to Lock On they will now also call out missiles launches not directed at themselfs, but without more specific information. Generaly the input you get from them about the battlefield is very low (except recon mode wich is a great idea). The wingman AI is very far from the equal tactical partner approach that is so important to NATO air ops (A-10 *cough*). As attack helicopters should not interract much with aircraft, ground units are the enemys you will interact 99% of the time. Unfortunatly the ground AI is extremly limited. Basicaly they can only follow a set path without pause, drive around obstacles on their path and shoot. Their pre-determined rollcoaster ride can be initiated (but not stopped) by triggers. Otherwise they will not react to actions taken by the player. With the use of the trigger system and the unit activation as consequence, some advanced features can be crudly simulated. But because this will take many trigger lines in the editor, such behaviour is generaly limited to only a few key units. In the my missions you find on this forum I tried to test the limits of the current trigger system. Like some others I have expierienced that after you master to operate the Ka-50, the game shows some lack of gameplay. Combat and battlefield realism is in no way on the same level as the simulation of the helo. For me the primary motivation to play combat flightsims is to take real world tactics and apply them to the simulation. To be succesfull by using advanced tactics is the climax in sims for me. I just love it when a plan comes together :) Unfortunately in that regard Black Shark is a bit of a shallow experience at the moment. There is not much point to use surprise, confusion or suppression tactics. Trying to remain undetected before attack gives no advantage (and is almost impossible anyway because of the absolute detection logic of ground AI). The only really thing you have to worry about is to keep the correct distance to threats. If you master managing distances (which is not that difficult) you can turn most missions into a shooting range. Now I said a lot of not so pleasing things about Black Shark as a combat flight simulator. What you have to be aware though is that Black Shark is a spectacular flight simulator. The simulation of the Ka-50 is incredible and is well worth to invest money and time. As such I would highly recommend to buy this sim. Also DCS is in constant development and I am confident that it will evolve into a great 'combat' flight simulation with time. On some of my criticised points they might already work on right now.1 point

The pilot is Milenko Pavlović, who died 4. May 1999 above Valjevo. He was the commander of 204th. He littrely pulled out a younger pilot out of the plane who was just about to take off, saying You're not going to go there and die, I am. RIP1 point

:(I was having the same issue. I know they usually tell you that you need to use the most current drivers with games however I tried everything outside of formatting my machine and had no luck. I read a few posts and read that some people where having issues with 9.0 Catalyst drivers. I decided to remove all previous drivers from my computer, after doing so I installed the drivers that came with my ATI 8870. This driver version is 12-099 (8.53).Then I rebooted my computer and the game started fine. I have not had any further issues with the game not starting. Just in case you were wondering, before I made this change, multiplayer would start but Single player would not I hope this helps you.:thumbup:1 point

Hello, I wanted to share my test results of Cat 9.2. I tried 9.1, but went back to 8.12 in the past. BS is running at 1920x1200 with every option maxed out (even water). 4870x2 with every option maxed out(except as noted below), dual 3.2 gig CPU, vista 64 bit, D3D overrider for Vsync. (Riva tuner not running). With advanced AI Catalyst BS would not run. Changing to Standard AI Cat, BS works well. When I run Crossfire, colors are much improved, menus are ghosted over each other in between flights. With or without crossfire, I had no more 'ground surges" when flying fast and low. Framerates are 24-40's / BS normal startup, 35-50's with 4 cores enabled manually. When I start BS with the dscaff script for i7 8 core, at first I saw no FPS improvement. I remembered that the script took longer to enable the cores. I checked Affinity after waiting a bit, but only one core was enabled, I then went back to the sim to exit. My fps then went to 45-60 (I guess all cores kicked in). I have to say I like 9.2. I will test BS more with crossfire enabled and live with the ghosting menus. I lost a flickering I had with 8.12 and 9.1 that seemed like the haze in the distance would flicker with the rotor shadows (but I noticed the flicker with out rotors running too). I am glad that is gone. Vsync, even with D3D overrider does not work in windowed mode, which costs me the usual 20 fps, so I don't miss it. Vsync works fine in full screen mode with D3D overrider running.1 point

Reading threads like this make me wonder -- am I just too easily amused? My wife would say yes. :D I haven't even touched the campaigns and rarely ever do. Most of my flight sim time is usually based around flying missions with certain objectives or goals that I want to focus on. I find that I don't need much of a virtual world outside of the pit. I guess if I could use an example, most of the time I'm just flying stuff to keep up currency. I'm not participating in Red Flag or Mary every single night. I've tried that, but I lose interest fairly quickly. The demands upon my attention are too high. A while back I finally clicked with the campaign in Red Viper and flew several missions nightly for a time, but as soon as something else grabbed my interest, I stopped and I haven't been back. I put aside flight sims for a good while in the past few months, actually. When I picked them up again I didn't have the patience to pick up my Red Viper campaign. I don't know if this on topic or not, but to get it back on topic, I'll also say that I would also like better AI. I'm talking about BS, I mean I always want better AI since I play off-line. :D1 point

:D1 point

Curious. - The groundunits actively move to close gaps in defenses: If you try to get in and out the same route, you usually run into a SAMsite on egress - groundunits call in fighters, if they locate you (IIRC they even called in arty, if you remained in the area) - SAM range/effectivity and Calling support is massively disrupted by taking out their EWRs, C3 and detection radarsites - wingmen AI uses cover and pop-up-attacks - wingmen AI attack threats with priority - primary and secondary targets may change during missions - dynamically, not scripted - wingmen AI based upon RPG-style experience-values - ground AI makes troops enter and leave helos (infact they even run towards you, if you aren't able to touch down at the predefined area - at least if they can see and reach you) oh, and LB2 has a working and credible AI for the second seat. :smilewink:1 point

The AI in BS relies on heavy scritping. If you play the campaigns that come with the game, it's pretty fine. But here the fun ends. As the scripting has it's limits, replayability is only worth the notice in terms of different missions you may encounter when replaying the campaing with different outcomes. There is no automatic behaviour other than units firing masses of shells and missiles at you, even if it is a single soldier with a stinger. There is no autonomous reaction to your attacks by single units, their groups or other forces. The same way, there's no prescripted interaction with your own troops. So it no way compares to AI in LB2, not daring to mention F4. :noexpression: It was posted some more complex behaviour will be implemented, but so far it's unclear wether that will come in the patch or in the next module. These are the weaknesses of an otherwise nice game, though. If you like LB2, I bet you will have fun with the simulation.1 point

I try not to fly in singel player mode. Compaired to the AI in LB2 the ground AI are close to same but pilots are worse. We are hoping some of this to be fixed in the up comming patch. But will realy be worked on in the new game engin to come out with the A10. P.S. welcome to the forums1 point

Yes he did.. And I disagree with his assessment.. Yes.. Which is why Ulrich's blame of some 'mystery' software does not make any since to me.. In that I did not change anything else on my system.. All I did was re-install BS.. And it fixed the error.. Now since I did not install or uninstall any other software.. How can Ulrich conclude this error is due to this 'mystery' software? When no other changes were made!1 point
