4. Hi! I have just received this newsletter and it says VRS F/A-18E for FSX is now available in pre-order - 10% off. Release will be this December. Since this is actually an entire simulator that uses FSX as graphics engine, not just "addon" I am getting one myself. What convinced me totally is that one of the developers is the one who programmed F/A-18 Hornet 3.0 - I loved that one - and the Korea sim too. http://www.vrsimulations.com/

 5. Due to a lack of a specific informative guide existing on these forums, confusing radio chatter during actual gameplay, and a joy of organized flight I'd like to discuss flight formations in DCS: Black Shark. Command Access Flight formation commands are executed via R-800 (VHF-2) radio by the flight lead only. Radio equipment must be functioning, on the same frequency, within 150km range, and have line of sight. The primary formation management interface is reached using keys (default assignment) [\] Commands -> [F1] Flight -> [F6] Go Formations… Primary Formation Commands Shape: basic layout [F1] – Heavy [F2] – Echelon [F3] – Spread [F4] – Trail Overwatch: Special modified positioning of one or more flight member [F5] – Overwatch Configuration: normal/mirror-image [F6] – Left [F7] – Right Spacing: distance between adjacent flight members [F8] – Tight [F9] – Cruise [F10] – Combat Formation Shapes Right (default) / Left Heavy (1) (1) (2) (3) (3) (2) (4) (4)Echelon (1) (1) (2) (2) (3) (3) (4) (4)Spread (1) (2) (3) (4) (4) (3) (2) (1)Trail (1) (2) (3) (4) Overwatch (1) (2) (3) ( ) | 1.500m | v (4)Overwatch commands the last member in a formation to offset 1,500m behind his normal position in the formation for the purposes of observation and security. Combined with the "Cover Me" command, the overwatching flight member can effectively, securely, and automatically respond to hostile aircraft threatening the flight lead. Configuration Heavy, echelon, and spread formations can be placed into either the right or left configuration depending on expected enemy direction, terrain, or to facilitate safer en-route or combat maneuvering of the flight. Trail is identical whether in right or left configuration, but the status is remembered by AI so that a "Left Trail" will transition to a "Left Spread" simply by ordering a change in shape from "Trail" to "Spread." Note, the player vocal sound file will declare that changes in configuration are "left echelon" and "right echelon" respectively; this is a mistake as only the configuration will change and previous heavy, spread, or trail shapes will remain in effect. Spacing Tight (1)<-50m->(2)<-50m->(3) Cruise (1)<----100m---->(2)<--100m-->(3) Combat (1)<-----------200m----------->(2)<-----------200m----------->(3)Tight, cruise, and combat spacing rules for close (~50m), medium (~100m), and far (~200m) spacing between adjacent flight members respectively. Ideal formation distance choice depends on phase of flight, terrain, weather, visibility, maneuver requirements, weapons employment requirements, enemy detection abilities, etc. Generally wider spacing allows freer maneuvering by members, greater enemy detection ability, and lesser chance of flight path conflict with another member. On the other hand wider spacing decreases the ability to navigate in poor visibility, reduces the speed at which a formation can change direction, increases exposure to enemy weapons and detection equipment. Again do not be confused by the player vocal file that declares "combat spread" formation; this command only commands the spread shape and does not change spacing.

 6. Hey, after getting frustrated because of the pixelation by the 32x32 icon present in LOMAC on Vista, I have decided to create a 48x48 icon replica of the LOMAC icon for people using the 48x48 icon view in Vista or XP. All you have to do is click "change icon" under the shortcut on your desktop. Attached is the .ico and .png file: http://www.mediafire.com/?ltd0cnbotmy Image: Enjoy :)

 17. Is there a test firing range in Zukovsky actually? Or can they only do "dry" tests like simulated missile launches? Yeah, that's my guess too. I doubt it will look like a clone of something we already know. Only a few shapes like maybe the nose, the canopy or the tail fins will look familiar I suppose. If I'm guessing correctly, then it wont take long until people start asking for the reasons of the differences. Lot's of interesting stuff to be talked about then. Looking forward to it.

 28. Interesting thread, I guise we all miss a good dynamic campaign. Therefore 51st started its own multiplayer dynamic campaign called CRIMEAN INCIDENT. Unfortunately its only for pilots who are in squads and for those squads that get invited. Reason for this is that pilots/squads need a little bit more communication skills then a average pilot ordering his units by a press of a button.I can easy say that its the closest similitude war I ever played. Red and blue generals plan and make rots for theire ground and air units and pilots try to forfill that to therie best ability. http://campaign.51st.org/trailer.html

 29. "Reputation, as a social scientific concept, refers to the existence of a socially recognized persona: an organizing principle by which actions of a person (or group, organization, or collectivity) are linked into a common assessment. On one level a reputation constitutes a moral gestalt that is linked to a person – an organizing principle for person perception. However, reputations are more than this social psychological claim: they are collective representations, enacted in relationships. In this, the opinion that one individual might form of another often differs from a shared, established image. Reputations are embedded within social relations, and, as a consequence, reputation is connected to forms of communication, tied to a community. Social identification and reputation operates in several domains: personal, mass-mediated, organizational, and historical. While reputations often begin within circles of personal intimates, they spread outward. First, people create and share the reputations of those who exist within their social circle – friends and consorts. Personal reputations are of immediate consequence, because the actions of those in our social world have the potential to shape our lives and interaction outcomes. People are concerned with the repute in which they are held because of the options that reputations open and close, and because reputations permit us to evaluate ourselves in particular ways: the identities we're given channel and shape the identites we can select. Further, public reputations directly affect how we come to see ourselves - a reason we attempt to shape our behaviour when among those whose opinions matter." -Gary Alan Fine What Panzertard said: More Rep = Greener = Stronger Kung-Fu = Further Distance obtained when Tossing Midgets!

 32. Like I said, LODs work in conjunction with "Object" line... but give it a shot, run a test and set LOD to 0.5 and see the difference in "entry" ranges... Anyway it doesnt matter... but setting LODs too high is def something that should NOT be allowed beyond the default levels...

 37. It is certainly too early to condemn the Saitek X65F to oblivion, as we haven't seen its quality and useability yet. A lot of the criticism about it not being FFB is fair though... Saitek ran a poll in their forums, and the overwhelming response was for an FFB HOTAS. From the community's perspective, this choice to go with an FS HOTAS came out of left field, and was a disapointment. People are entitled to that disappointment, especially in light of the existence of DCS:BS, where a well implemented FFB would really enhance use of the sim's trim function. I can see how an FS design could appeal to the decision makers over at Saitek. Saitek has taken a lot of guff over the pivoting mechanism / centering spring design utilized in current sticks, etc. Getting rid of that probably looks good to them. The FS design *could* be very robust. While I understand that some folks are really interested in replicating the aircraft controls as closely as possible, I can be reasonably satisfied by what works well (whether it duplicates the aircraft's controls, or not). The human mind can be very adaptable (well, *some* human minds can... ;) ) so it is entirely conceivable to me that a good FS stick could work well in many sims for aircraft that don't have FS sticks in reality. For instance, I suspect it will work fine for the upcoming DCS:A10C sim, for folks that want it to. I'll agree that FFB may have some inherrent compromises, but I don't recall MS Sidewinder FFB2 users complaining about that stick being as bad around the center for DCS:BS. Software/drivers seem to be the key. With word-of-mouth (ie. forums, etc.) being so important in marketing, you would think that Logitech would be parachuting at least one programming wizard into E.D.'s offices to help make the G940 work better in DCS:BS, etc. @ Baksie (the O.P.). My advice would be to wait. Take some time to assess your wants and needs about how to control your sims. Is it realism that rings your bell? (If so, which of your sims does the realism matter most in?) Do you want the stick to move a significant distance, or do you think your mind would adjust to a Force Sensing stick that has a 1/4 inch (or so) of throw? Do you want/need a LOT of hats/switches/rotaries, etc.? Were you happy with your X-45? Would an X-52/X-52 Pro serve your needs well now? Did you like your CH Pro pedals, or do you want something with a different spacing or feel? Are you open to physically modifying your equipment, or do you prefer to use them as they come out of the box? What is your budget limited to? How long can you stand to wait before acquiring something to replace your current equipment? The answers to all of those questions could factor in to your decision(s). I suspect Viper's suggestion of buying a low cost stick for now would be a good idea for you. Good luck!
