  3. Actually I don't think the Argentines ever fired an R530 in the Falklands war. I know there are reports of this but it was never verified. There is I believe only 1 reported case, and in fact I believe turned out to be a Jettisoned 374gall tank. There are verified accounts of Shaffirs being fired head on. R530 employment was not an easy thing to do especially head on in a Fighter v fighter engagement. The process of getting the lock cancelling sight orders and waiting for the missile to synch with the radar all took time. Coupled with some pretty poor manoeuvre capability using the R530 in a dynamic Air to Air engagement is problematic to say the least. The RN pilots were intimately aware of these limitations (they had commonwealth buddies who used both the R530 and Mirage III and spoke the same language :) The Harriers success in the Falklands in the Air to Air role can be put down to 4 things. 1. They were there (RN was fortunate indeed it still had Invincible and Hermes) 2. They had the AIM9L (no head on shots but a super reliable missile more so than the AIM9D/G they sailed to war with) 3. The Brit pilots were well trained. 4. The Argentines were operating at a extreme range. As to the debate as to how good the Mirage III v the Sea Harrier FRS1 is. Well I speak from the point of view of a then Current Mirage III pilot who around a year after the Falklands war had the opportunity to do some some DACT against the vaunted Sea Harrier. In these engagements both types were operating at reasonable ranges from their respective bases so Fuel considerations were a minimum, Both sides had good GCI to enter the engagements. Sea Harriers were running 2 x Aim9L 2x100g tanks, 2 x 30mm ADEN. Mirages were running 2X R550 MKI, 2 x 110g tanks, 2 x 30mm Defa. So in terms of fight entry things were about as fair as they could be. Of course no real shots were made but the RN found a very differrent outcome when tangling with these Mirages being flown by equally experienced crews to themselves and able to concentrate on the job in hand and not the prospect of a 400nm bug out over the South Atlantic. A serious comparison between the 2 aircraft is quite revealing. The Sea Harrier Frs1 radar was only marginally superior to the Cyrano IIB ... this advantage being offset by the Sea Harriers truly humongous radar signature especially in the forward quarter. Harrier turn performance both instantaneous and (more so sustained) is pretty marginal compared to a Mirage III. VIFFING though much vaunted is hardly used in a real engagement. We got to see it in some academic comparison set ups but none of us got to see it in the DACT engagements. VIFF is impressive but the huge energy loss puts the Sea Harrier an a perilous position as its poor turn performance is now even worse since he has donated all his precious IAS to the Energy god.. a fact well known to the Harrier pilots. There is another VIFF related thing the RN guys called "nozziling". This was used when trapped in lag (common for a relatively poor turning aeroplane). The idea was to blip the nozzles a small amount with the aim of getting just a little more nose authority with the hope of a possible a Missile lock. In these situations only 2 or so nozziling attempts could be made as the performance loss associated with it then affected normal turn capability (i.e. aerodynamic) that the end result was you would be worse off. The R550 v Aim9L front sector capability was the real issue we had to deal with. Defeating the AIM9L on the initial merge wasnt to much of a problem (not going to say how here), and once the fight started the AIM9L Sea Harrier was at a distinct disadvantage versus an aeroplane that could turn as well (in fact better) that was equipped with a DF missile with a min range performance inside the turn like no other of its generation. (so good the Missile and gun envelopes overlap even at high G and Angle off). Couple that with the R550s auto acquisition boundary's (significantly better than the AIM9L/Sea Harrier combination at the time) and post merge you have a really lethal combination in the Mirage III/R550. Bug out potential for the Sea Harrier was extremely restricted by its poor speed capability .. realistically 600Knots v 730Knots. The result of these engagements though peacetime training were the exact opposite of what happened in the South Atlantic 12months or so earlier. Over the years the Sea Harrier developed this Aura of being a superb Air to Air machine, when the truth is it was really pretty average. That is not to denigrate the aircraft or its pilots record in the Falklands war They had a job to do and did it supremely well.

  15. This action was on 1st May. As I said multiple times the Argentines didn't challenge the British air superiority ever again -after- 1st May. The Mirage III pilots, which obviously had some A2A training, didn't play any more role in the air war after the 1st day. Regarding how good the A2A training of the Mirage pilots was is questionable. They fired R-530 missiles without solid lock. Read your quote, they fired R-530 radar guided missiles in a look down/shoot down situation, with Mirage III that isn't capable to do so. They also fired R-550s (a rear aspect missile) from a frontal aspect. None of their missiles they fired on 1st May guided, the all went ballistic. In their only deciding engagement with Sea Harriers they were flying a very unfavorable welded-wing formation, while the SHAR were flying a combat spread. It cost them both aircraft. If you want a good presentation of Argentinan air action, I suggest to read the FAA website with a translator. Gives a pretty good overview. Have a look at the Dagger actions on May 21, 23 and 24.

  17. @ Lucas From Hell: No, you are totally correct, the Russian chatter is actually taken from a YouTube video of an SU25 doing ground attacks in Georgia...It's totally random and I dont speak Russian. Everyone else, thanks for the kind comments...As for the song, personally, I Love it, I think it rocks hard. But I do agree that good solid rock songs do help make a fighter video..

  22. I messaged DoctorK some time ago with questions about the LockOn mission file format. Unfortunately he didn't respond (I hope he's still about, please post in this thread if you are watching DoctorK). In the meantime I reverse engineered the RamGen code since I wanted to re-implement parts of it in a server-side Java dynamic campaign system I'm working on. I won't make the source code available yet since I want to give DoctorK a chance to tell me not to, if he has other plans in the works or wants to release his code instead.

  24. Awesome! Thanks for the patient and insightful answers. I saw a bumper sticker that said 'pilots do it better'... did it mean answering questions? EtherealN, thanks for taking the time to post. Although I'm not a dev, your explanation brought it to my level, and I'm thankful for the understanding. I've been doing some testing and found some interesting things. Could you comment on these settings and your opinions please, EtheralN? I might also respectfully request that you or someone at ED post a sticky on performance. What a huge difference some config made! The best post I found for performance config was http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=43222 . The best post I found for an explanation of nVidia settings was http://www.tweakguides.com/NVFORCE_6.html . I followed his suggestions closely, comparing it with other posts, and did some testing of my own. His suggestions were as follows: //graphics.cfg: MaxFPS = 60; //options.lua ["water"] = "1", ["shadows"] = "0", ["effects"] = 2, ["terrPrld"] = "100", //InGame Options: Textures - High Scenes - High Civ Traffic - Yes Water - Normal Visib Range - Medium Heat Blur - Off Shadows - None (See above) Resolution - 2560x1600 Res. of Cockpit Displays - 1024 //nVidia options: Anisotropic Filtering - 16x AA Gamma Correction - On AA Mode - Override Application AA Transparency - Off AA Setting - 4x Triple Buffering - Off Extension limit - Off Error Reporting - Off Maximum pre-rendered frames - 3 Force Mipmaps - None Multi Display - Single Negative LOD Bias - Clamp Texture Filtering Quality - High Quality Threaded Optimisation - Auto Vertical Sync - Automatically On I was finally able to heat up my cards while doubling my FPS! In my testing I created a mission where I start on the pad and several flights of Russian SUs and KA50s are pounding some French armor (sorry, it's an American thing) right in front of me on the other side of the pad. I turned my IT23 and ABRIS on during testing. It's interesting that in testing my new config with time acceleration on full, my FPS went down to the FPS values from before reconfig. hah BEFORE CONFIG: 20-30FPS with GPU temps approx 120F. CPU utilization was average 70-90%. AFTER CONFIG: 40-60FPS with GPU temps around 150F CPU utilization average 40-70%. IMPORTANT DIFFERENCES FROM PREVIOUS POSTS CONFIG: Full screen increases performance by about 5FPS Shadows=0 and Shadows=FULL shows only about 2FPS difference Water=0 gave me the largest increase in FPS(20ish), but the water looks like something from Falcon 1.0 . Water=1 made the water look very good, but the difference between water=0 and water=1 is only 1 or 2FPS.. I kept it at 1. Res Cockpit Displays from 1024 down to 512 made no difference in performance, but I also saw no decrease in the visual quality, so I left it at 512 just in case. Multi-Display/Mixed-GPU Acceleration to 'Single display performance mode' brought my CPU utilization down by about 10%. I don't really understand how this could be, but the explanation on the above URL for nVidia settings was that some apps that allow multiple monitors in high graphics try to span the resources out to both monitors, even if you're using only 1 for the app. AA setting in nVidia settings made THE biggest difference. I went from 4x to 'SLI 32xQ' and saw a breathtaking difference in video quality. I actually saw an increase of 5-10FPS. My CPU usage went down quite a bit, and my GPUs started to heat up! Thanks for all of your comments and help in reaching this point. I'm very happy with the performance, visual quality, and most of all the amazing content in DCS: Blackshark. Thanks for a great product. I'll be purchasing A10 /excited! and all future variations.

  27. Hi, in my case I've done something similar in order to get the Coordinates when a ONLINE player ejects. (I'm making a kind of online data exporter so in a future I can do some dynamic campaign in PHP) I hope that it help, also it would be fine if you tell what file you're coding (events.lua, export.lua, etc etc) And don't give it up, I've wasted 2 full weeks in order to get something usefull ;) That's coded in the events.lua: function on_eject(id) report(_("%s ejected."), player_info(id)) eject(id) end local function eject(id) local runtimeId = get_player_runtime_id(id) io.write(string.format("id=%s pilot=%s coords=%s side=%s EJECT\n", runtimeId, get_player_name(id), get_unit_coordinates(runtimeId), get_player_side(id))) end local function get_player_runtime_id(networkId) missionId = get_player_mission_id(networkId) if missionId == nil or missionId == "" then return -1 end runtimeId, ok = net.dostring_in("mission", "return db.clients.red["..missionId.."].ID") if ok and runtimeId ~= "" then return runtimeId end runtimeId, ok = net.dostring_in("mission", "return db.clients.blue["..missionId.."].ID") if ok and runtimeId ~= "" then return runtimeId end return -1 end local function get_unit_latitude(runtimeId) latitude, ok = net.dostring_in("export", "local o = LoGetWorldObjects() return o["..runtimeId.."].LatLongAlt.Lat") if ok and latitude ~= "" then return latitude end return -1 end local function get_unit_longitude(rundimeId) longitude, ok = net.dostring_in("export", "local o = LoGetWorldObjects() return o["..runtimeId.."].LatLongAlt.Long") if ok and longitude ~= "" then return longitude end return -1 end local function get_unit_coordinates(runtimeId) if runtimeId == nil or runtimeId == "" then return -1 end return get_unit_latitude(runtimeId).."//"..get_unit_longitude(rundimeId) end local function get_player_mission_id(networkId) if players[networkId].unit ~= nil then return players[networkId].unit end return nil end

  28. I think the boredom with DCS:Black Shark comes from the lack of world fidelity. Sure, the Ka-50 itself is a masterpiece of simulation but outside of the aircraft the world is pretty bland. Wingman AI is weak Interaction with friendly forces outside of your own Ka-50 4-ship impossible Navigation and communications oversimplified Pre-flight environment non-existent Enemy SAM AI is weak Flares don't degrade SAMs pre-launch Dynamic campaign missions soulless Individually-crafted missions few in number Airframes feel like throwaway Xerox copies Trigger-based missions are tissue-thin In Falcon AF there was a war going on and there was everything there in front of you from tankers to bombers fighters to helicopters. When you were tasked with blowing up a bridge or providing FAC-assisted CAS is meant something. In DCS it always feels the same, pre-packaged and independent. All you get is some non-military speak poor English translation briefing text block which is often misleading or outright wrong. It says take off time is 08:30:00 and starts you at 08:30:01 with a cold aircraft... BAM instant fail. The Ka-50 is a very well-tailored tuxedo attending a party in the back room at Walmart. All dressed up and no where to go.

  29. Thanks Doktor K, I really enjoy your work as it seriously cuts down time needed for making missions and makes them unpredictable! I always had trouble and I felt like cheating during mission editor phase, even if I hide enemy units and disable Map view (F10) I'm aware of their presence in mission. Also adding all those ferry, cargo flights and busy ground units to add to realism was a time consuming procedure! I really like what you did, adding task names of flights (TARCAP, Ferry, FAC etc.) is really really good move as it helps the player to gain a huge amount of SA prior Take off. However I have some suggestions You might consider for a next patch or update of RaMGen utility. Please hear me out! 1) I believe that adding a Homebase drop down list in Campaign and Single Mission tabs under difficulty part would be good so RaMGen would generate a mission with player spawning from the airbase he likes and knows sorrounding terrain! It should also place mission objective near that airbase and generate a campaign that places FEBA near that particular airbase. 2) Option of a Ramp start (from Parking area) for Player and the flight he/she leads! 3) Adding a new tab with options on Custom selection of Blue & Red side country members and custom selection of Blue, Red and neutral airbases in LOFC map if possible! These are some of the suggestion I can think of ATM, I'm not sure if it's all possible to include in future versions of RaMGen but I believe that those options would increase realism furthermore. If I think of any new ideas I feel free to post 'em in this thread! Keep it up Dr.K! Edit: I just fixed some typos!
