This is a work in progress. Right now I'm working on getting the sound right. I "hope" to record new voices for ATC and perhaps other; we'll see :)2 points

I don't see politics in that post. He's only discussing tactical military options. Anyhow, this is something that should be decided by moderators and not made into a discussion. If you feel that a post deservs their attention, please use the Report Post button ().2 points

This is my belief. Flaming Cliffs offers many aircraft and is easier to play. Some people that are not familiar with flight sims may not see the value of a DCS title since it only comes with one aircraft. FC2 is a good gateway to the DCS series. I rather have a multi aircraft, easy to fly sim for new people than to have them get overloaded with DCS and quit before they really ever get started (were talking about new people here that only had a slight interest in trying a flight sim anyway). In my opinion FC2 is like DCS Training Wheels. It's important because of it's value to introduce new people to our flight sim and prep them for the more complicated DCS titles. Once they fly for a while, get familiar with instruments and navigation, and figure out what kind of pilot they are (since FC2 offers air to air and air to ground aircraft), then they can step up to a DCS title.1 point

Escadrille Lafayette's insignia. American volunteers flying for the French during World War I. My guess is that the Mirage 2000 belongs to the same unit nowadays. Yes, very same one used by TFC.1 point

Just did this this video to fit into this great music. Watch it in Youtube in HD and turn on the speakers. Enjoy!! :joystick: Also to show that at low level and in appropiate terrain, the A-10C can defend itself pretty well :pilotfly:1 point

I was an Aviation Environmental Systems Technician for a while in the military. Oxygen Positive pressure is the key. The o2 regulators in our military aircraft are super expensive. They have the best available components and redundancies. The mask is sealed against your face so the o2 system can fill your lungs for you. Sometimes in a highG or stressful situation, breathing isn't on the top of your priority list. As stated earlier, having an oxygen rich environment in the cockpit can be bad if there's a fire. o2 isn't flammable, but remember the flame triangle... heat, fuel, o2.. increase any one of those and your flame increases. I used to soak cigarettes in liquid oxygen, light them, and watch them go off like rockets. Cooling There are two cooling systems we use; Air Cycle Turbines (ram air) and Chemical Condenser (liquid chemical). The liquid chemical system is similar to what you'd see in a car, but the military uses chemicals that make freon seem drinkable in your morning coffee. In some heat exchange systems they use liquid nitrogen when necessary, but that is super inefficient and dangerous due to the high expansion rate (800:1) of a chemical that is -321F. Liquid nitrogen is just super compressed gas. It's much more efficient to compress a gas or liquid in a closed system where it doesn't have to bleed off. The Air Cycle system is interesting and super efficient: There's a scoop that takes in ambient high speed air from the outside of the aircraft. It flows through a turbine fan that is connected to a shaft to another turbine fan that turns fast enough to pull clean air from around the outside of the compression section of the jet engine(bleed air). The hot air is forced by that turbine system (ram air), through a small orifice. The physical impact of the super heated air being rammed with such force through a small orifice super cools the air to around -30F. This system also inherently pulls any moisture out of the air. Other valves provide pure hot bleed air to increase the temp of that air if it drops too low, depending on the system or area being cooled. On most weapons systems there are elaborate heat exchangers made of classified materials that this air runs through. A good example of this physical reaction of Ram Air is to blow on your hand with your mouth open (like steaming glasses to be cleaned), then blow on your hand like you're cooling it (small orifice in lips).1 point

I wonder if there is a possibility for Gaddafi forces to be ressuplied from ports in 'friendly' African countries through Chad, now that he is in good relations with the current government there and they do have a huge border which will be make it difficult for NATO to implement the weapons embargo? If that happens and there is still a sizeble part of the population supporting him the situation in Libya can drag forever, regardless whether the rebbels get more weapons or not. For me it seems not too difiicult for a 'willing' company (of course with appropriate financial compensation :smilewink:) to brake this weapons embargo and I can tell you there will be more than one interested party willing to take the risk for the money involved in the long run (even from NATO countries I'm sure :megalol:), so I doubt that the embargo on Libya will have the same effect as on Serbia during the 90's. For now Gadaffi seems to have enough weapon reserves so he is not too desparate about purchasing new weapons for prices way above the market ones. My opinion is that there is no military solution without a land invasion by NATO which is not going to happen for sure, so diplomacy has to take place any time soon. P.S. The UB-57 MRLS seems interesting, could be effective against infantry as an area denial weapon but I doubt the precision and range and would be totally ineffcetive against any armoured vehicle1 point

Correct... Cabin pressure runs through three different modes of operation. The military aircraft pressurization works a bit different from a passenger airliner. This is exactly the same reason one must be baro chamber qualified to go above 16K...at least it is this way in the US. Explaining further. The three modes of operation are unpressurized, isobaric, and differential. For your first 8K of altitude, the cabin will only maintain the same as your outside pressure. Once you cross the 8K mark, the cabin will continue to maintain pressure at 8K all the way up through 23K(roughtly). At 23K and above, the pressure changes to what's known as a differential pressure. At these altitudes and above, the cockpit is regulated to a 3.2 PSI differential when compared to outside pressure. Even though the cabin is pressurized, the high threat of hypoxia still exists if not on regulated oxygen. Atleast in the US, our pilots are supposed to be on oxygen at 10K and above at all times.1 point

At first I was always lucky to get more than 5-10 seconds on the boom until I changed the way I went about things and now can hang off the tanker for as long as I want filling from almost empty to full internal and 2 external tanks. I use a standard x52 that's a little bit tired, so if I could do it on that then so can anyone. First really match the tanker in flight. Not just zoom up, throw out brakes and somewhat join him in a drunken Waltz over Georgia. Get right up underneath and very close and setup so that you will stay there with minimum effort on the stick. I often just sit there for a minute or two just matching the tanker before moving over for a connection. Listen to the engine, after a while you will get an ear for the sweet spot that seems to be natural neutral for matched speed. I imagine an invisible glide scope projecting out from the boom at the same down angle. This is the glide scope that I am allowed to move on. So, along with roll to remain aligned, I can either go in/up or down/back, and nothing else. Move up this glide scope to connect to the boom. You will find there is this sweet spot where throttle and trim just match to make you neutral to the tanker. Once you find this spot it's really just using the throttle to move up/forward and move down/back. Using the throttle like this and nothing else will naturally cause the aircraft to stick to the allowed glide scope. After a bit all you are really doing is just twitching the throttle infront of and behind the neutral spot to keep the boom in the green. With throttle and roll the main thing is to anticipate the corrective action needed. Things seem to happen with a fair bit of lag so making the corrections early work better. Another thing I found helps is don't look at any one thing in particular. There is no single spot on the tanker that can give you all the information your brain needs to maintain position. With TrackIR I just look up a little and stare out to infinity and letting your whole vision get everything your brain needs. I found this helps to kill of the dreaded pilot induced oscillations that creep up on you as soon as you hook up. Don't stare at the boom, it lies to you. Have fun. :)1 point

Basic handling, Turns. In level flight, use your rudder to keep the balance-ball in the middle. "Step on the ball", which means apply left pedal if ball is to the left, right pedal for right ball. This is also true for gaining altitude as this will give you maximum vertical thrust (if level). Keeping in balance also means better seating comfort during flight. The same princilple applies for level turns. Bank and apply adequate pedal in the direction of balance-ball offset. Do not let your nose drop! During bank, your total thrust vector will become a function of vertical and horizontal thrust. With less vertical thrust you will need to apply more power (collective) to stay at altitude. In a level turn, the amount of G you are pulling is a direct function of your bank angle (inv Cos 30 deg bank = 1.15G, 45=1.4G, 60=2G, etc). In-game trim is setting current attitude as cyclic neutral. It is also defining new neutral for pedal position. That's why you get double deflection in any direction of applied cyclic and/or pedals if that position is maintained after engaging trim. I THINK trim reset is [Ctrl - T] or [Right Shift - T]. Check control options in Menu -> Options. Be careful not to reset trim at IAS>200kph as the abrupt change may cause rotor-collision. During level flight you should use Collective for altitude change and Cyclic for speed change. HOWEVER, for (quick) manoeuvring you must think ahead of the 'copter; During a stop, the pitching up (of the nose will reduce the induced flow of air down through the rotordisc. The total reaction of the individual blade will be more aligned to the rotor-plane axis, thus increasing the efficiency of your main rotors and increasing individual blade AoA,) causing a dramatic thrust increase. You must kill this extra lift before it happens by lowering the collective (power) as you commence manoeuvring. I would recommend reading up on some helicopter aerodynamics, as the handling of the sim is very close to real life (with and without SAS).1 point

:thumbup:1 point

The best to Stop the Shark from high speeds without climbing is a hard Turn. Or you have to slow down early enough. Also if you are stoping in a Straight you have to look out for an Vortex ring effect. But your Weaponsystems are in the Direction you need it... not in a Turn. Greetz :)1 point
