Things I learned after watching Red Tails (2012): 1. Germans are not smart, you're leading the enemy back to your base and don't think about radioing ahead to warn them. 2. The enemy is more polite then your own countrymen, they refer to the Red tails as 'Africans' and your own use the n-word. 3. Escaping from a German POW camp looks really easy. 4. A good way to pickup Italian women is to do a flyover of her house and then show up at her doorstep. 5. When you design an airfield in a combat zone, make sure you place the buildings and tents within 20 feet of the runway sides and put the largest concentration at the end of the runway. 6. When you yank back on the stick and kick the rudder hard at 400+ km/h your plane will stop and pirouette in mid-air and your guns will align up perfectly on the enemy on your six. 7. Me-262s always attacked in packs of 20 or so. 8. When you are escorting bombers to the enemy's capital it is no big deal to chatter incessantly on the radios and even talk about where you are going and where you are. 9. Me-262's sound like Tie Fighters from Star Wars. 10. Making a head-on pass at an Me-262's cannons is a smart tactical move. 11. German warships sailed alone in broad daylight right near an American air base. 12. Despite being 180+ km/h faster, German jets are cupcakes when facing the Red Tails. 13. Me-262's cannons are only strong enough to plink aircraft hulls and put small holes into the canopy. 14. .50 cal machine guns on B17s sounded like that of a twin turbo laser. 15. When your best friend dies during aerial combat and you see his plane crash to the ground, you woodenly say "Damn!" like you just dropped your slice of pizza. 16. Fighters are now required to fly in between the bombers to protect them. 17. Momma doesn't care if the foreigner you let in your home soils your couch with your daughter in a premarital romp that would create a shotgun wedding back home. 18. German 30mm rounds made 8mm bullet holes. 19. German prison guards are horrible shots. 20. American bomber pilots all wear leather jackets with a big picture of a B17 on the back like a high school letterman's jacket. 21. The Germans only used 109s, skipped 190s, and went straight to a whole lone squadron of Me-262s. 22. Italian women say, "I love you" first in the relationship. Any Italian ladies here by the way?2 points

EDIT: Thank you for moving it to appropriate channel, mod. I shoulda known better. :D Hope it's all right with the mod to post this here. Anyway, I plan to somehow incorporate German vehicles from WWII era into DCS World, and decided to work on the V1 since it's the easiest. Keep in mind I'm very new to 3d modeling, and any advice would be greatly appreciated. If anything, it's more stuff to blow up? :D I'm curious how to add this into the game and make it fly? :music_whistling: Or is that something ED does for us? EDIT: 5-27-12 I'm feeling adventurous. Started on a Tiger I.1 point

Decided to start working on a few skins for public release which will be available at my site: http://www.axis-and-allies-paintworks.com There's a few small things I want to update on this skin but I will release it at some point this week :) I would like to extend my thanks to AliFish who explained the Specular process to me as he has helped add an extra level to this skin. PS, I'm aware of the DCS Mods forum section, but maybe a skins category inside the DSC:P-51 area would be useful? Saves a lot of looking around through unrelated stuff and the main area will more than likely become cluttered with a lot of skins discussions.1 point

I haven't flown with FSX for over a year. I even built my whole pit around A10C but I had a go with A2A's Spit and it's truly wonderful. Especially if you have ever read the book 'First light' by Geoffrey Wellam.. I used REX Overdrive for the texture sets.. works well! I'm going to get GEX and UTX for Europe soon and give it a go.... check the screen shots... very atmospheric! :) 2012-5-20_21-0-8-131.BMP 2012-5-20_21-0-12-332.BMP 2012-5-20_21-6-23-463.BMP 2012-5-20_21-6-44-136.BMP1 point

my special project, ive got quite a bit of knowledge in certain areas soo i decided to make this public. also i will be doing these skins for the virtual horsemen display team initially before i release any of them. so prepare for ultimate tease. and showcase of the power of the nvidia 670 and what it can do with DCS:World. spectacular i tell ya ! i hope you believe what you see as these are just screenshots :) quality ? feedback most welcome. .i`ve not seen anything better in any flight simulator and its not the 670... bug u see are incomplete work as the work is WIP. for this to go public i have request for the developers if they are interested. request for change to some core aspects i can not change. and thanks to rock for the livebait markings, as im not so familiar with the details of warbirds1 point

Hope it works for you. If you have any problems, post here and I will try to help. Now, for the AI Comms you might try adding VAC (voice activated commands). It works well also and it allows selecting the options without using a keyboard. Just push the VAC PTA key & say the command or phrase. I have added the steps needed to setup & use the TrackIR AutoHotKey files with a HOTAS Warthog in the first post. :pilotfly:1 point

Use the attached file . Copy it in your DCS install > \Config\MonitorSetup\ folder. Than use this tool PixelWindow to exactly measure the Width/Height of the inside of your TM-MFDs while holding them on your screen. Now open the "MFCDs in lower corners.lua" with Notepad++ and exchange every Red/Green number in this file (see quote above) with your measured Width/Height. (- ideally it's the same value for width and height , but this depends on used monitor and used aspect/resolution.) Now the MFCDs should be in the lower corners and have the right size for your TM-MFDs when you select "MFCDs in lower corners" in the "Monitors" drop-down menu of DCS. Tip: Use Sticky Velcro to mount them on you monitor for easy on/off. And use the fussy side on the corner that is directly inside the monitor , to prevent damaging the surface of your screen. BTW: You are lucky to have this forum-name, otherwise I would have posted only a general link, without deeper explanation :P. Welcome aboard!1 point

Yeah, we should go to some nice pub, order a lot of beer and discuss it whole night :drunk::thumbsup:1 point

Here a short tutorial of how to start, used for Adobe Photoshop, but the process is similar in Gimp or PSP... 1. Create your diffuse textures. This is your basic aircraft 'skin' with the paint job, all markings, stencils, noseart etc as you want it to be shown on the actual aircraft. I strongly suggest using original ED template released here: http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/downloads/misc/texture_template_of_p_model_51d/ You get 4 *.PSD you can open in Photoshop or similar to start with. Edit at will, I hope you have basic understanding of how to work with layers. This guide focuses on creating specular maps for your skins so I assume this is the easy bit for you. (it is indeed with the template containing all you need to create a custom skin). The aluminium part of the skin is obviously light gray colour. We want to get this parts of the aircrafts surface shiny in the game. I also strongly suggest you use the ED's modelviewer to preview your work easily: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=88508 For extra polished aluminium, I prefer to use RGB 160 174 180 as a background colour. The darker colour you use, the less reflective it becomes in the game once you combine your Diffuse and Specular map (Texture). Let's start with the file 'p51D_DIF_Fuz_Front.psd' from the above template which is the front part of the fuselage with the nose, canopy and radiator scoop of your Pony. You will need some way of creating a DDS file out of the PSD from Adobe Photoshop. I suggest you use the native plugin by nVidia: http://developer.nvidia.com/nvidia-texture-tools-adobe-photoshop So you can open and save DDS files straight ouf of Photoshop. 1. Create your specular textures. There are several methods to achieve similar results. Here is the easiest one. I will create specular map for the front part of the P-51 fuselage for all-metal P-51 and I will add a sample noseart and paint to it later. a) Starting with the diffuse texture - turn all your marking, paint and other layers OFF so only background colour, panel lines, rivets and weathering layers are visible similar to the picture below: (I left some black stencils and red bits and bobs ON for now) b) save your texture as straightforward 24bit BMP file and edit is as follows: click IMAGE -> ADJUSTMENTS -> DESATURATE (or use the shortcut Ctrl+Shift+U) Your texture will be desaturated, you obviously lose all colours etc. c) click 'CHANNELS' on the right hand side d) click on green channel (Ctrl+2). The channels are identical now, as you have got the whole thing in grayscale. e) Invert the green channel IMAGE -> ADJUSTMENTS -> INVERT (or Ctrl+I) you will see how the first line representing all 3 channels changes, click it to switch all channels back on: and save as a DTX1 *.DDS with no mip maps (afik this is the correct format, it certainly works OK and the size matches the default files made by ED) This is your specular map to match your diffuse texture with no markings on it. Name the former p51D_DIF_Fuz_Front.dds (mip maps, size 2.66MB) and the latter with lodts of green and cyan p51D_SPEC_Fuz_Front.dds (no mip maps, size 2.0MB). Using these two files in the model viewer (or in the game if you wish) will give you a result of very shiny and highly polished surface of your Mustang. You can see that everything that was dark on your desaturated BMP texture is now green on the specular texture and reflects very little light. Everything that was light, e.g. our light grey background colour is now cyan in the specular map. These parts of the surface are considered a highly reflective parts by the game and it will appear mirror like. In this example, very light colour has been used resulting in lots of cyan. Too much perhaps unless you intend to create a highly polished P-51 example. Now try to go back to the beginning, to your PSD file with all markings switched off and change the background colour to darker shade of grey, say RGB 102 / 108 /111 and repeat. this process with desaturating and inverting the green channel. You will get a specular dds file with much less cyan colour in it and the surface will therefore appear much less reflective in the game engine. You can experiment with various settings and find what looks best to you. The conclusion is that whatever you do, just get yourself a desaturated texture of your standard diffuse texture (your actual skin) with the background colour lighter on the surfaces you want to see shiny (cyan) and darker bits for parts you want to keep matt (green bits on the Spec map). Keeping your weathering and lines / rivets on the initial texture (the one you are about to desaturate) is a good thing as it adds to the plasticity of the final skin. Also, if you keep your paint chips in there lighter, they will be more visible as shiny missing bits on matt painted surface. Very realistic indeed! My personal method is combining few pre-made spec maps varying from all shiny (lots of cyan R+B) to all matt (very green based on dark surface) and playing with the opacity depending on the result I'd like to achieve on that particular part of the aircraft, e.g. selecting markings via Ctrl+D and pasting that selection onto matt bit. But once you understand the principle, you will find your own way of achieving light effects as needed.1 point

Hi Winger, the original PSD template is to be obtained here: http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/downloads/misc/ This particular skin: http://www.axis-and-allies-paintworks.com/download.php?view.531 Just have a look at how the included specular map is done, some information is here: http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=1464152&postcount=24 and here: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=888551 point

im being rediculous ? i dont follow. i respect people. i introduced myself to rock and explained what id like to do for them, within 1.5 hours of me delivering this skin to rock, he has betrayed our agreement to promo the new skins via a promo video. and betrayed my request to initiate a skin pack. sir im not being rediculous im sticking up for myself and my work and my credability. but iam listening to you. trying to understand why someone would do this so to me so quickly and so blatently.1 point

Thanks for the replies! This is my desk. Currently running the sim on just the one monitor (both are 22'' 120 Hz), it's quite nice to be able to have other stuff on the right screen when I'm flying. So what would you guys do with this? HOTAS on the keyboard tray? Maybe I'll try to prop it up somehow to combat the weight.1 point
