Please Address Game Bloat from CoreMods & Excessive Liveries
Hiob replied to celestHawk's topic in DCS Core Wish List
A mod manager is basically a script that copy and pastes certain files and keeps backups from the originals. The neat part is, that it keeps track and offers a convenient interface for all of this. The only thing you have to do, is to put your "mods" (altered files) in the same subfolder structure as the files you want to replace. I'm using OVGME, because it does what I need and is very simple to use. Yeah, I get that. But doing it manually got out of hand quickly. Actually, I could've kicked myself for not learning how to use a mod manager earlier.....- 69 replies

Please Address Game Bloat from CoreMods & Excessive Liveries
Hiob replied to celestHawk's topic in DCS Core Wish List
Why don't you just use a mod manager to manage your modified liveries? I do that with all the files I manually altered. I just add them as a "mod" and then deactivate all mods before an update and re-apply them afterwards. Takes a minute.- 69 replies

There may or may not be an original technical manual for the AH-64, that can or cannot be found online pretty easily. Maybe it mentions the control forces (if it does exist that is....).

How to increase the rendering distance of grass and bushes?
Hiob replied to unmar's topic in Texture/Map Mods for DCS World
I appreciate this. But just food for thought - the rendering distance of objects is just a simple variable, like a lot of other things in the GFX engine. Just give us users the option to set it ourselves according to our machines and mission. Currently it is unnecessarily frustrating for helicopters. It's simply a different gameplay. I couldn't care less about drawing of far away objects, but having fences, bushes and other LoDs just pop in as a wavefront right in the center of your POV is.... not nice. I don't want to beat a dead horse (at least no more), but if you could ask your team for an (optional) setting that would satisfy helicopter needs, that would be awesome. -
What was that quote again? Something like “I wasted half my money, the rest I spent on booze and hookers!“

Are large monitors still relevant?
Hiob replied to MJY65's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I‘m in the „VR is just a gimmick“ camp. I had (have) two different HMDs from different generations (Valve Index and now a Quest 3). And while the latter is a vast improvement (wireless, see through for your hands etc). I still happen to use it very rarely and in between. It is still much more hassle to get running compared to a Monitor/TrackIR setup. And event though I like the immersion and flying is actually a lot easier in VR (especially landing and hovering in a chopper), I still prefer the immersion visual clarity and vibrance of my OLED screen (48“) and not wearing a face mask. I think I will finally be on board with VR when the visuals really match a monitor while the HMD is barely more inconvenient than a pair of regular glasses. (Which will happen eventually I guess. Big screen Beyond is pointing in the right direction). Let me put it this way. Right now I wished I could love VR, but I just can’t (yet). -
IF(!) your motherboard (likely with the latest bios update if ever) does support 5000 series CPUs, you will most likely see "a" benefit. Unless that is, you are otherwise severley bottlenecked. Generally speaking, CPU, GPU and RAM should be somewhat in line with each other. Make 100% sure you MoBo DOES support the CPU you are aiming for. The same Socket alone isn't a guarantee. how much RAM do you have and what is your GPU?

I think we do (as far as I can tell). Never forget that someone who is dissatisfied with something is several times more likely to voice his/her opinion than somebody who is happy. So the forum will always be a misrepresentation about the state of affairs. Main problem will always be that you can't align the priorities of all individual customers and the business anyway.

Am I the only one that get a very strong "Groundhog Day"-Vibe from the forum? On Topic: I'm with DCS for five years now. As far as I can tell, it has improved a lot. Both, regarding stability AND performance (granted, part of the latter has been eaten up by new features and eye candy). But what would be the alternative. Have a perfectly stable and performant DCS with the looks and features from 2020? No thanks!

You want me to pin the above link in the first post? No problem, can do. Any additional explanations I should add to it? No, wait. You weren’t talking about this appreciation thread, were you? But the Airfield equipment thread, right?

That‘s my plan as well. We will see how it goes. I‘m looking forward to any release of manuals and/or supporting documents.

I am not sure the Herc will be any less complex than A-10 (or any other fighter/attacker we have in DCS). Quite the opposite actually. The question is how much of the complexity you can disregard and still get it flying. It will be interesting for sure!

Yep! Enabling proper steep dives....

I'm just so happy, that we finally get to fly "big birds" in the DCS environment. No discussion, that logistic is a vital (actually the most vital) part of any military operation... but even without that, I'm thrilled that we get the Herc!

Reshade is actually a nice software, that quietly sits in the back if unused without eating performance. And with a single keystroke does its thing. You CAN however get lost in the rabbit hole of turning to many knobs and adding too many filters…. and eventually, depending on what you are doing, it CAN add up to eating a couple of fps. My conclusion for reshade is „less is more“.

That depends strongly on what exactly you do with it. If you keep it light and only (e.g.) use basic color correction it is barely noticable. If you use more intrusive options like fake HDR or somthing like this, the main problem is that people tend to overdo it. The charming thing is that you can turn it on and off instantly and see changes in realtime. As I said, I mainly use it to compensate the atmospheric haze (sharpening+contrast) and de-saturate the whole game slightly. I'm not sure, but I would bet that there is a plug in to adjust singular base colors (green!) one by one. But I haven't tried such wizardry yet.

DCS completely freezes my PC, i can't play it anymore.
Hiob replied to felipesm's topic in Game Performance Bugs
I would strongly recommend a mod manager. Deactiavte all mods before an update and then re-apply them after the successful update one by one. Way easier to manage and to troubleshoot. Also, an update may replace/remove modded files selectively (depending on if it were altered or additional files) - which can damage mods in surprising ways. -
Reshade to the rescue! I completely agree with most of the above, but personally I find DCS in general more on the lollipop side of the spectrum. But color perception is difficult to agree on and I‘m not the creator. So I don’t expect them to cater to my preferences. Feedback is given, and for the time being I adjust the colours via Reshade.

Seeking Former Military Pilots or CFIs for a DCS Project Collaboration
Hiob replied to DeltaChangoAlpha's topic in Chit-Chat
Well, you definitely sparked curiosity! Personally, I can't help you, since I'm not an actual aviator or anything related - but as a consumer, I will certainly keep an eye open for any progress of your project. Good Luck! -

Hiob replied to rapid's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I hope, that the next flagship card from AMD will be competitive. Even if it gives just 90% of the performance of the 5090 (well, the equivalent next gen card. I won’t upgrade from a 4090 to a 5090). I’m so done with Nvidia right now. Sick of companies turning evil once they built their empire with the customers they then proceed to kick to the curbs.
