PIMAX Monster 12k, Eyes tracking, INSIDE OUT and Much more !!
Panny replied to ICARIVS's topic in Virtual Reality
I'm a user of the Reverb G2 and 8KX. I hardly use my Reverb G2 when I'm piloting, the fact is that the FOV, even limited to 150 is far, far better than what the Reverb offers. It's significantly more immersive and makes things like formation flying and aar far easier. There's a drop in resolution, but I can still read all the gauges(F-14A). If you're doing something like dogfighting, having the peripheral is good, since you odn't have to wrench you neck as much as another headset. However, the 8KX is extremely performance intensive, and my 3090 isn't powerful enough still. Fingers crossed the Pimax 12KX with proper eyetracking will address many of the performance problems while having a better resolution. -
Hi there, *Disclaimer* Before starting all of this I want to clarify I'm not claiming to understand in great detail how the AWG-9 works, and I'm certainly not an SME. I've been replaying the Fear the Bones F-14A campaign made by Reflected. It's an excellent campaign, and has a fun range of missions. However, in mission 7, there's some interesting behaviour with the AWG-9 and by extension Phoenix. Of course if you've been meaning to play this campaign, this involves some spoilers, so click away if you don't want to find out. In essence, you and other F-14s are tasked with destroying around 12 or so Backfires. In essence - to take a picture call: Four groups tracking west First three groups, champagne, 3 wide, 3 deep. North group, bullseye x, y, 28,000 feet, hostile, heavy (4 backfires in diamond) South group, hostile, heavy (4 backfires in diamond) Trail group, hostile, heavy (3 backfires) Fourth group, trail, bullseye x, y, 28,000 feet, hostile, single The backfires that are in formation tend to be separated from each other by 1,500 feet. These are large aircraft with a fair amount of spacing from each other. Before I go ahead - I'm aware that due to how TWS works, the WCS merges contacts together if it's unsure whether they are distinct or not, hence in RWS you can see numerous contacts, whereas TWS shows fewer. My point here is whether the resolution is that much of a stepdown when going against large targets. When looking over the AWG-9 radar, in TWS the radar meshes each group into one blob, and is only able to discern each individual contact by about 20 miles. By 20 miles the antenna train angle from ownship to each hostile would be a few degrees different from one another. I wholly understand at greater ranges that TWS would not have the resolution to pick out individual contacts in a group, but it seems surprising that sub 50 miles it cannot at least start to pick out some of the individual contacts? If these were fighter sized targets in parade/cruise formation it would make sense, but given the nature of these aircraft and their formation, there's something I'm not understanding or something isn't right. Additionally, even with the blobs of contacts, the radar struggles to figure the target aspect. Sometimes it gets it right, but alternates suggesting the contact have a TA of 30, and then going back to a correct TA. The Backfires in this mission are flying straight and level, and not defending. What is it that the radar may be struggling with that makes the TA jump around for a contact that isn't manoeuvring? Finally, the behaviour of the Phoenix can be somewhat strange. As you'll see, I fire four Phoenixes in TWS. The first and third Fox 3 don't loft, but still guide. The contacts were not extrapolated. Instead, they burn out their kinetic energy, but are still apparently guiding? In both Tacviews I set target size large, and they all went active. So what I'm struggling to understand is that with apparently perfect conditions in which no contacts became extrapolated, these two Phoenixes just didn't really loft? Beyond that, it's an excellent and fun mission, but I'm confused about this behaviour that the radar exhibits of merging contacts that have significant separation between one another. If anyone else has the campaign I recommend they try it out for themselves. Cheers, Peter Tacview-20211117-141854-DCS-FTB - 07.zip.acmi Here's the second Tacview. I'll be interested to see how @Reflected succeeded recently with this mission. Today I gave this mission four attempts, revisiting it. The first three times I failed and last time I succeeded, but it honestly felt like pot luck. The big issue is how the Backfires are bunched together. It's fine when in RWS since the radar can pick them all up, but when in TWS the resolution drops and it merges targets together. I'm not sure why, but this is the only scenario I see where Phoenix missiles get confused even when the target hasn't become extrapolated. First attempt: I claimed to Angels 35 and went full burner. Dropped tanks when they went empty. I fired all Phoenixes from about 65 - 50 miles. The first three immediately went dead. Last three Phoenixes successfully guided. Wingman, for whatever reason had far greater success in downing backfires, downing 5 backfires with Phoenixes, and intercepting two AS-4s with Sidewinders. There were four backfires left, and they fired 8 AS-4s in total before we downed them. In fact, of the 8 AS-4s, they were all shot down before they hit the carrier. What happened was the USS Farragut, attempting to hit an AS-4, SHOT the carrier instead! Therefore I failed the mission. Second attempt: Like before, I climbed to Angels 35, but chose to fire the Phoenixes at closer range, hoping the radar would hold lock better. The locks seemed better, except for the fact that only two of the Phoenixes succeeded. This was in straight and level flight, the missiles just struggle with multiple contacts in TWS. This time about 17 AS-4s were launched and most managed to get to target. Third attempt: I chose to keep timeline closer, firing between 45 - 35 miles. First two Phoenixes immediately went dumb and failed. This time, about three of the Phoenixes succeeded. Combined with wingman's success, only three backfires remained to fire their AS-4s, firing a total of 6. For some reason this time the FFG-7s tried to fire, but were damaging themselves. One AS-4 connected with the carrier. Fourth attempt: This time I tried to fly lower, and faster. I stayed at Angels 25, to give the radar a look up situation. Firing from 45 - 35 miles, I was at Mach 1.5. First two missiles immediately went dumb. One went off for a Fulcrum, which is fine. Next three succeeded. My wingman had about three kills as well. This time, five Backfires remained, and a volley of ten AS-4s came out. Fortunately the carrier group was far better at defending itself, and actually killed the missiles, and the FFG didn't shoot the carrier. I short, there's something up with TWS where it's merging contacts making it near impossible to get targets when they're in formation, unless you're at close range. THe problem is you can't get close range, otherwise the Backfires fire their AS-4s. It's certainly frustrating when Phoenixes fail to go on targets that are flying straight and level, and aren't even chaffing. To be clear, I'm not saying this is Reflected's issue, I just think there's something up with TWS. I'd be shocked if someone can get a 6/6 kill!

F-14 getting wing damage when two spawn together on Elevator 4
Panny replied to Panny's topic in Bugs and Problems
I think it's irrespective -
Hi there, Apologies if this is a thread that's come up beforehand. For some reason, when Tomcats spawn next to each other on Elevator 4, in spite of the fact there is no physical contact, at least one of the F-14 Tomcats will get wing damage. Sometimes superficial, other times substantive. Is this a known problem, or are we the only to have experienced this? Cheers, Peter

[DCS ISSUE] No RWR of F-14 AI Aim 54C incoming
Panny replied to Skunk_McFunk's topic in Bugs and Problems
I find the AI F-14 can be worked around quite easily. It always seems to go absurdly fast, Mach 1.5 and above, but doesn't fire until 35nm or so. I've successfully splashed an AI F-14 at 70nm, because they go so fast -
Nervous about joining an online flying group?

Hey there, I'm writing this post, as I thought some newer users may appreciate it, or a sort of PSA if you will. The learning curve involved with DCS, as well as learning your aircraft of choice is a massive task to undertake. As much as it is inspiring to watch a DCS YouTuber effortlessly dogfight your favourite plane or dodging SAMs, it is also quite daunting learning how to get to that same point of skill. Perhaps you've found yourself mixing your training between haphazardly referring to the manuals, scouring forums, and YouTube videos. You're getting to the point in which you've played most of the instant action scenarios and some of the free missions, and feel like you need to take it further; and the option of multiplayer seems more attractive. However, unlike dogfighting against computers, you're operating alongside(or perhaps against) humans, which can feel like a quantum shift. You may be considering online squadrons, but nervous about your skill level in relation to theirs. Believe me when I say this, the vast majority of squadrons love to have more people share in their hobby, and take great pride in training people up. The great advantage of multiplayer, and by extension online squadrons, is the added value of learning, community, and most importantly immersion. When I first considered multiplayer, I was quite apprehensive, but once I joined I never looked back, and my flight simulation hobby is vastly enriched because of it. Learning: This can be a sticking point for newer people, since they feel that they aren't adequately experienced, or not good enough for an online group. This may be counter-intuitive, but in some scenarios, being less knowledgeable and joining a squadron to learn can be better. Ultimately while you're in single player, you don't know what you don't know, whereas when you train with other people, they can immediately identify what you need to learn, or what's not going right. Most DCS modules are extremely complex, and frankly the learning process for all of us never ends; we're all just at different points in that journey. As a newer user, you will massively benefit yourself to join a squadron as they can tailor your training requirements. Additionally, many instructors enjoy teaching, and it further enriches their hobby. The core note here is that you won't be burdening anyone from whatever experience level you're starting from, and most instructors love to teach anyway. Community: This may seem marginally obvious, but actually having people to share in your hobby is great. Flight simulation, let alone the DCS community is quite niche, it's not like you can easily have fellow hobbyists down the road. Instead communities are globalised over the internet as we're all spread few and far in between. Thanks to platforms like Discord, the value of community within a flying group is far greater in which you can jump in and talk to your fellow squadron mates seamlessly. Since I've been part of DCAF, I have made some great friends, and I enjoy being able to share my hobby with likeminded people. Immersion: At the end of the day, the value of flying with other humans rather than AI can't be understated. Whether flying with a human RIO or operating as a flight(or both!), the immersion offered is unparalleled. I'm still always impressed when I'm part of a flight of four in parade formation, as we all collectively work together. Or when you all go into a mission, splash some bandits and return to the carrier, the sense of achievement at the end of it is exceptional, because you all had to work together and thoroughly plan what you were going to do, and reaped the rewards of it. I often find going back to single player scenarios feel rigid and too 'sterile' now, since the only human component is yourself. Like what I was saying over learning and community, flying as part of a group fundamentally enriches the hobby. If you're still unsure, feel free to contact myself either here (or Discord), as well as some newer members who fly with me. This can be a good opportunity to scope out what it's like to join a flying group. We're all part of DCAF(Digital Coalition Air Force): Me: Panny#2973 Vak(halfway through training on the F-14): Aisxos#8894 Deivid(also in training on the F-14): Deivid#3419 Brody(recently finished training and is a line pilot): brodyzach#1944 You can also visit our Discord should you wish: https://discord.gg/RrzuvXXd9M Otherwise, if you're interested in my group, I fly with DCAF(Digital Coalition Air Force) as an F-14 instructor, and would love to help more guys out. We also have F-16 Fighting Falcon, F/A-18C Hornet and AV-8B squadrons, who will be delighted to take on more people. You can read about us here: And here: https://dcafoc.wixsite.com/home Or jump onto our Discord!: https://discord.gg/RrzuvXXd9M I hope for those entering on their journey with DCS, this post can at least alleviate a few concerns about the online paradigm. I've got 3090 with Pimax 8KX. I use reprojection with 90Hz. Using the AMD FSR mod brings graphical performance to a reasonable level. There's some tinkering involved, but by dialling the right settings back it's perfectly smooth.

Hey there, Thanks for this, I'll be sure to have a look through. Cheers, appreciate that you're willing to help. I suspect I'm most likely two weeks away from receiving it(I ordered last weekend and am in UK), but maybe I'll be a bit luckier. Fortunately I ordered base stations with the headset, so fingers crossed they should come with. I'll look into the counterweights

Hi there, I've just ordered the Pimax 8k x headset. I assume it will be with me in two weeks or so. Anyway, I'm used to the Reverb G2, but have never used Pimax. My impression of the headset is that there's a lot of tweaking involved, and I was wondering if any other 8k x user would be willing to guide me in setting it up/optimising it? Would be willing to send a few £ for a coffee or two for the time. Of course, it's still a few weeks away, but it would be great to have a guy to chat to walk through it. I'll be uninstalling and reinstalling DCS beforehand, the idea being to make it as clean as possible prior to the Pimax headset. If anyone has any immediate advice, I would really appreciate any notes you may have/guides. Is this something that ED have to fix, and is there a timeline on that, or is it ready when it's ready?
-
When I play I often just jump into the back and hit nose target aspect. Ultimately as you get better it goes a long way to get comfortable with the RIO seat, so you can have an understanding of what Jester is trying to do or what he's doing wrong. But yeah target aspect nose is key to set. I heard in a future patch nose will be set default

My feedback/experience of missions so far
Panny replied to ToastedVengeance's topic in F-14A Fear the Bones Campaign
So I've been flying with my girlfriend, and she's been learning RIO. One of the things I realised, perhaps user error on my part, is that it's very important to set target aspect. Setting target aspect NOSE can help a long way towards getting the Phoenix shot to succeed.
