In the special settings of the AH-64D. It defaults to instant trimmer mode which if the physical stick it no returned to centre immediately it will essentially double your control input making you buck around like a horse. Central position trimmer mode makes it so it won't recognize any control input until the stick is returned to centre. They both have their pros and cons but I only use central mode. I recommend watching youtube videos on how the trim modes work because it's confusing at first.

I think your hitting on something that people maybe need to be more aware of. If you don't fly a helicopter in DCS for a while, apache or whatever you are going to have to reacclimate. It's not a personal failing to fiddle with the control axis to get them usable and comfortable. The more time you spend flying and practicing you can dial things into your liking. We don't fly helicopters in DCS because they are easy.

A question you may naturally now have, is if you can have multiple missiles in the air and hit targets in succession. You can. Either by jumping in the front seat or firing the missile yourself in the back seat and utilizing George's NO WPN > Lase (Right Short) but it takes good timing and the targets have to be fairly close together. The ability to 'fire and forget' is why a lot of people are excited for the radar hellfire variant coming soon.

How to change nose direction in a hover, what is correct way?
placsea replied to bies's topic in DCS: AH-64D
Also with option 3. I'm not sure if it's just a muscle memory thing being used to the damping of the SCAS or a general skill issue but holding FTR at a hover goes about as well as lighting myself on fire. -
Video description is how I did it. People who know how to make custom binds like zrads FLIR/TV ones in the dcs userfiles can do it that way.
-
Yes, but how useful it is, I haven't tested.
-
So I found out you can actually do this by creating a custom bind or using a third party program to do it for you. Here's me using touch portal to store from the back seat. It works great.

Yep, George was fine in SP and broken in MP. They a few patches ago finally fixed him in MP and now he's broken in both.

Yes because the attitude hold is drifting, meaning the altitude hold has to compensate and quickly reaches it's authority limit as the aircraft continues to pitch down. Everything is stable when I trim and engage the hold modes then the pitch SCAS green cross creeps forward incrementally. This behaviour occurs with or without the altitude hold engaged. Edit: Problem was me

Edit: I was wrong. No problem or issue.

So while at the moment there's no command for George to 'store' a target he has lased, when you look at the TSD you will see a line from the ownship symbol with a crosshair over where he is looking. Next slew the cursor over that crosshair. Now you can either add a point manually with the keyboard or the 'cursor enter' OR select CAQ on the right side bar and 'cursor enter' and a white cross with PLT will appear where you have selected. You can use that as an acquisition source. It will be nice when we can direct George to store a target with the AI menu but this is what you can do as of now.

Like the others guys have said, you command the AI to execute tasks related to flying or operating the weapons. A big part of the learning experience is how to handle this workflow of what is meant to be done by two people and it can be challenging but after enough hours you get into a sort of rhythm and come to understand the quirks and idiosyncrasies to become effective in whatever task you're trying to accomplish. There's no 'wrong or right' way to learn because everyone has different preferences, for example I hardly EVER hop into the front seat of the apache, some guys it's the complete inverse and everything in-between. Treat the AI bot like just another 'system' to learn, take it slow and in bite sized pieces and you'll be fine.

Noticed it looked different from pre patch build instantly.

I've never had a good experience with instant action missions. Download Apache hunting grounds from the DCS user files area, it's fantastic and has multiple areas with varying challenge.

This seems to be the difference between using the gun in SP and MP. In SP the TADS seems to 'remember' the last lase distance so he lases and shoots and when he stops the TADS will still have a number (1950m for example). In MP as SOON as he stops lasing it just defaults to 9999 and screws his logic up, resulting in the stop/start inaccurate and incomplete bursts. So it seems this discrepancy between SP and MP is the cause of the issue, but why is there any discrepancy at all? Are weapon systems on other modules like this?

I highly recommend Brad's latest video on pitch attitudes as it is at least in my opinion the cornerstone of enjoying the Apache especially if you don't have the luxury of friends to gun for you. Using George effectively is a busy task, apart from playing with the TSD you are constantly whipping your head around getting him slaved around looking for targets, cycling through listed targets and then peeking at the TADS to get a picture of the area all while keeping control of the helicopter is pretty full on. Having the helicopter trimmed properly lets you forget about the controls then when finished with finding targets, your back on the controls exactly where you left off. This means you get to avoid the 'oh crap, I slowed down 30 kts and ballooned up or that slight bank progressed into a big one and you have to recover with big control inputs and where were those targets again??? everything outside looks different'. Great stuff as usual Brad, thanks.

The attitude hold months ago kept you rock solid, now I find it will drift and either accelerate or decelerate over a period of time and is noticeably worse at higher speeds. You could at one point go AFK completely with the hold modes on, I would not recommend that now.

please read the change log Robbie Tank removal with update?
placsea replied to McDaniel's topic in DCS: AH-64D
It's the internal aux fuel tank, in the future we will be able to either have the robbie tank or 1200 gun rounds. -
Thank you very much for the reply and insight. I'm always interested in ways I can manoeuvre without it being excessively 'gamey' or 'hollywood' which is obviously difficult if you're a complete layman who's flight experience is a paper plane

What is the preferred way to transition from lateral flight to forward flight? Should I just pitch into direction I want and control altitude with collective and pedal the aircraft into aerodynamic trim above 40kts?
