  1. In the Russian planes: I know that Mig29 has only 2 positions, full & up. But the Flankers I thought have also "half" flaps and auto flaps (manouvering and gear down).
  2. I wonder if their route has something to do with the upcoming NAM2005 in Orland. It would be a blast for the NATO aircrews to have some "simulated" naval threats of this caliber. :)
  3. Yes, it`s always good to know where your target is but the IFF interrogator can also work with the radar off or in standby (Line of Sight or Full Scan modes). Even with the EMCON switch on (total emmission silence) the pilot can operate the interrogator part of the IFF "manually", however all other transponder functions are inhibited. Nobody can ID you. And...getting back to already "covered ground"... the target will know he`s being interrogated.
  4. Hehe, I assume you refer to "hit brakes-fly right by" scene. ...and I always thought he pushed the wing sweep man. override lever (located next to the throttles)... I would have to see it again - Oh, never mind :)
  5. Well, as you read through all the threads in this forum - many things are not on "RL" level but they are kinda OK as GGTharos said.
  6. Hmmm, ... I know about the "light" in the cockpit that comes on when the some interrogator scans you and finds out that you do not comply
  7. Yes, it`s wrong. And I know that some in ED know very well how the basic IFF works (transponder modes). Olgerd, for instance knows his F-16s very well :) and how the AIFF system works in certain Blocks (like MLU, 52). ...in Russian planes, it`s very similar.
  8. LOL, ...maintaining wing area to range ratio, of course! (I don`t know what that means... :) )
  9. LOL - don`t you ever leave your wingman!
  10. I haven`t listened to this clip yet... but, I remember hearing about incident of this nature a while back. It was an F16D though, over German airspace ... well, same sh1t :)
  11. I tried it with and without ACS. In both cases, after hitting "k" and pulling to an almost complete reversal the script yanked me back forward. I never released the stick and pulled it immediately into a tight-ass loop. I guess the script ends right after nose drop. I only had 1.2k of fuel. ...it was not a "flip" though.
  12. From what I`ve noticed - only "proper" a/c in the "proper" mode.
  13. Yes they do work and the ball creeps up and down (amber in color - like US FLOLS). Too bad you can`t see it unless you`re really close and at night. I do have a little vid of my landing (shot from the cockpit), I`ll snap a screenshot out of it showing the ball very clearly. EDIT: here`s the pic. You have to zoom in to 100% or more to see it. http://webpages.charter.net/crusty.rs/FLOLS_001
  14. It is actually a backup mode with quite a few limitations - ranging (about 5nm - has something to do with the map (?) and airspeed - below 800 knots (well, that`s not a problem :) ) ... other then that, I don`t know much about it.
  15. The "immediate" mode in an F16 wouldn`t be DTOS? (uses AGR mode for ranging and could be designated through the HUD) CCRP of course is a pre-planned method and uses ground radar. Also in Block 50s there is also a passive mode that uses digital map with GPS updates (and pilot updates). For any XY position - there is known elevation.
  16. ...You mean Dlink missile ID numbers?... stop teasing :)
  17. If it was up to me... I`d put some cheap laser range-finder on it, or... perhaps some Flankers have them already. :)
  18. It`s all "magnetic" up there :) You set your gyrocompass also to magnetic and the HUD shows the same. The standart compass will show some errors (a degree or 2) in some headings due to interference from airframe, engines, etc. and these deviations are always posted on a placard somewhere near the compass. ...and of course you have to be in a straight and level for it to show you correct indications.
  19. Almost like my worn out Cougar :)... except, no strain gage past that point.:(
  20. I skimmed through this thread quickly... so, I might have missed it but I haven`t seen any mention about the effectiveness of "straining". When done properly (which after some training becomes a second nature), it could alleviate 3-4G. And... every Lockon pilot strains... I heard it on TS :)
  21. I don`t know... but I would imagine that the missile "checks" what`s within the HUD`s circle (roughly... of course) when the vis mode is enabled... when it comes off the rail. Then, if no joy... it embarks on a wild scanning hunt:)
  22. Very true Pilotasso... and somebody mentioned SU30? :)
  23. Well, you can trim the plane and aim for the basket inverted as long as you want :) ... without worrying about the oil and fuel pressures and... Looks cool :) and no I`m not gonna try it <<
  24. 9 min? - Are you talking about the Inertial Nav system line up? The HSI should work independently of the INS. It is pretty much a backup instrument in any modern jet and its own gyro takes no more then couple of minutes to fully spin up. Regardles of that, it can always be manually (or otherwise) re-alligned at any time.
