OK all of you computer / flight sim / hardware / know all geeks who come here. And I know you are around because I see you all over the forums, on TS, and in the servers, making the rest of us look bad with your advice and knowledge. I have somewhat of a dilemma and need some assistance. I recently opened a ticket with ED with the issue that when I open DCS, it boots into non full screen mode 50% of the time. And when I use the keys to bring it to full screen, my mouse stays at the non full screen, rendering it useless. Now!!! ED responded that my screen resolution was set @ 1380X760 and my monitor is a 24" monitor and needs to be set to 1920X1080 for DCS to boot full screen every time. And they were correct, it worked. But.......I'm running the Nvidia 660ti and although it looks very friggin nice, as you can imagine it has some lag in combat and the fps aren't what they could be. When I was running it at 1380X760, the sim ran very well on my 660ti. I just had to put up with having to restart it every other time I got into the sim because of the non full screen mode. My questions are: Is there a way that I can set it at a res. that is below 1920X1080 and keep the aspect ratio so that the planes don't look like pulled taffy? It seems that 1380X760 is the only res. that did not stretch the picture out, that's why I set it there. And I stayed away from the higher resolutions for performance reasons. So is there a way to set the ratio correctly for other resolutions? What card will run the 1920X1080 efficiently? I have the 66ti because well.....when I got it 4 years ago it was the best thing at it's price and it was a pretty good card. And, has anyone else had the whole non full screen issue? If so, did you have to go to your correct screen res to fix it, or was there a way to balance the ratio and res. to make it work? Much thanks!!!

This may have just happened as of an update or two ago. I just was commenting to ED on an unrelated ticket that the P51 and both German planes were having issues like this. When I went into the settings and realized that takeoff assist was at 100% for all three. I put it back to 0 and all was just dandy again. I always set it to 0 and was wondering why it went back to 100. None the less.......problem with the flight dynamics is solved. I hope I do not have to reset it every time I go into the sim. I'll have to check that out.

OK......To steam or not to steam. All I can tell you about this is that 1. I have never used steam and am very happy about that. 2. More often than not, I hear so many people saying that they wish they had not gone through steam exclusively for their modules. There are serial number issues, you don't get things on sale as much, and you have to wait longer for certain things. I have never heard any complaints about the way steam itself works as far as software, but I hear all the time that people regret not going directly through the ED sight for purchases. The Hawk??? The hawk is a fun module. I enjoy it. But you have to be aware that it is in Beta and there are some bug issues with it. It may not be a good first module unless you are willing to be patient and realize that you are purchasing a beta with some bugs. This is not to say that it is not a good product. It most definitely is. People just don't realize that some of these modules are in stages of development where there are some issues. All of these modules have been through this stage. Things get ironed out and they all turn out great. But the Hawk is still kind of in early development. Some other, easy "fully functional" modules are: the F86,and Mig15. They are great fun to fly and pretty simple as far as functionality. The Mig21 is a little bit harder but still great fun. Some modules that are more in line with simplicity are: F15, SU-25, SU-27, A10A. These are also fun but they are set up with less cockpit functionality. They are basically just simplified. The A10C is the best module here. The problem with it is that its very complex and it discourages a lot of newcomers. Although it is one hellofa module, and it is truly a work of art. It discourages a lot of potential DCS pilots. You need a lot of patience and a pretty good memory to learn the A10C. But it is the golden egg of DCS so far as I am concerned. The WWII planes and helis are all very accurate as far as functionality and flight. But they are challenging to newcomers and I would wait to get into them also. Of course this is all just my opinion, but I went through the same thing that you are going through now (as did most of us here) so I can only offer advice based on my personal experience. I guess that you should be aware that if you purchase Flaming Cliffs, the F15, SU-27, A10A, SU-25 all come with it. So you get all of those AC in one purchase. So that may be the way to go. Good luck, and welcome.

After you download the DCS map, you can go into the settings menu and Set the planes to sim or game mode. game mode is basically the arcade mode that you are asking about. The SU-25 is already simplified (IMO) in sim mode. The TFP-51 (in sim mode anyway) is set up pretty much like a real P-51. I have never used any module in game mode so I cannot speak to how they work in that mode. But you can definitely switch them to an easier mode.

Point taken. But I know lost of responders say nothing short of it. :joystick:

Someone mentioned this earlier and I think that it's a very valid comparison. I own both Xplane and FSX. When you purchase any A/C in either of these two sims, you are lucky to get a complete manual, much less a completed product. Most of the pay ware I purchased from them came with promises of updates and improvements yet not one of them has ever been brought up to the standard (or even close for that matter) that it's Dev promised. Not a one! Some of those planes went for $60 and their flight physics couldn't hold a candle to anything here. Not to mention that their textures and shapes are so boxy and unrealistic that it's hard to take them seriously. Any military planes, no functioning weapons. No missions, no training manuals, and 2/3 of the cockpits are inactive. When they put out AC, they're not in beta, they're just incomplete. DCS on it's worse day is ten times the sim that anyone else is putting out, anywhere. Other than silly things like misunderstandings about flight dynamics or how this or that works, there is very little to complain about in DCS. And it's rotocraft are unparalleled by anyone. Anyone who thinks that they're being ripped off or that these planes aren't up to snuff.....go pay $80 for a cartoon sim, and then go purchase their incomplete AC that never get fixed. It cured me of ever thinking that DCS is substandard.

Man....this topic is so over discussed. It seems that every module that comes out gets hashed over the coals over and over and over and for no good reason. So far as 90% of the people who own the F86 are concerned. This module is a solid addition to the DCS lineup. As it has been mentioned time and time again on these forums. Beta is only a word here. And indeed if you read your contract, it clearly states that these modules are in a constant state of development. So beta is a moot subject most of the time. There are modules that have been out much longer than the F86 that are still being developed, and changed. It is very much the nature of the beast. Quite honestly, I was just wondering to myself if the F86 were still in beta due to the whining going on about the Hawk still being in beta. I just don't pay attention to these things because I learned early on that these planes will never stop being developed. And my conclusion is.......I could care less. Everyone who purchases DCS products should be well aware of how the development of these planes works. Complaining over 4 letters B-E-T-A in front of the title of a plane means very little if not nothing here. Especially when the plane in question has turned out to be one of the most popular, and widely used modules in DCS. It is one of my favorites and I see very little wrong with it. And the things that I do see are common to all DCS planes. Wow.................Sorry for the rant, it's just that these threads are so pointless and prompt so many needless and destructive posts.

Has happened to me also. But....when I do exterior views of the plane, it has sound. Just no engine sound in the cockpit.

[REPORTED]P-51 gun dispersion after shooting and repairs
Zimmerdylan replied to Dirkan's topic in Bugs and Problems
It's not as bad as all that. It's not so terrible that you cannot use the plane effectively. I often go through complete missions and dispense all of my ammo without any real problems. You do notice it. Especially in prolonged air battles when you spend too much time on a target. I tend to use short bursts and that keeps it from happening. And it's really not too bad when you are strafing ground targets (less noticeable IMO). So it's just an issue, like any other issue with any other module. I wouldn't say its something to keep anyone away from the WWII planes. I still have a lot of fun flying the P-51. :pilotfly: -
[REPORTED]P-51 gun dispersion after shooting and repairs

That is my experience also. The effect does not go away even after you try and let them cool down. It has been like this from very early on. -
Thx BIGNEWY! I have already submitted them with my support ticket as this has kind of been an ongoing problem for some time now.

If you are an on line kind of person, 1.5 is much better in the sense that there are so few 2.0 servers out there right now. And (IMO) 2.0 is pretty darn cool, but it's got some issues that 1.5 does not. So I would opt for 1.5. It's free because you have to purchase NTTR to use 2.0, and even though there are a few issues, 2.0 is still in Alpha at this point. Both are great maps but 1.5 is a bit more stable in my experience. I guess you should know that 2.0 only accommodates the NTTR map. So the big difference between the two is that 1.5 is the Causasus map and 2.0 is NTTR. They will merge at some point but even then you'll have to purchase the Nevada scenery.

Yeah.....I usually have issues when closing DCS. It always shuts down improperly and gives me the DCS has stopped working message (I opened a ticket for that problem). But today (after update) It has booted me twice from the sim with the "DCS stopped working message". It has only rarely ever done this in the 6 years I have had DCS. And twice in a row has never happened. Whatever was in this last update, it seems to not work well on my rig. Just a heads up guys.

LShift+LWindows+Pause will get you to active pause mode If I remember correctly, you can use LAlt+J to take over AC even in Playback. Or, you can go to the F10 menu, click on the AC you want to take over and at the top of the page, click on the Icon to enter that vehicle. I am not 100% sure as replay is pretty much useless right now and I never use it any more. You do realize that the playback is broken? It never plays the same mission back, or even twice for that matter, So many people here don't bother with it at this time. As for the other two requests: NTTR is still in it's earliest stages so if the graphics aren't quite up to snuff, just hang out and things will probably get better. It's not even to beta yet. So they're ironing a lot of issues out right now. The lettering issue.....wow, Your guess is as good as mine. I have never heard of that before. Hope I helped a little. Sorry I cannot help with the lettering issue.

I am wondering. What do people use and why? I have the reflector track clip that came with my Track IR and it works fine. I have never really had ant troubles with reflective light from the background affecting anything in game. However, I'm not a fan of wearing a baseball cap while flying. I use a headset and was thinking about going track clip pro. Is there any other advantage to using the LED over the reflective hat clip other than the way it mounts? Other than the obvious interference issues that some folks have with extra reflective light.

+1 on the slip meter.

I kind of like the bugs and stuff. And if my memory servers me correctly (Mind you I ETS'ed 30 years ago). That plexi use to get pretty scuffed and dirty at times back when I was a frequent Huey passenger.

Works just fine now.

Relative performance of the Mustang, the 109 and the 190

[ame] [/ame] [ame] [/ame] I tend to go with these two videos on the performance level of the 109 and P-51. -

I love the Dora. I can easily outfly the P-51 in it. I think it's a great plane! -
Relative performance of the Mustang, the 109 and the 190
Zimmerdylan replied to Reflected's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
I remember when the P-51 first came out and people were complaining about the issue of practicality. "It has no place here" yet many of us rushed to purchase it. So I am 100% behind anyone who puts out a module based on their personal interests. If I am also interested, I'll certainly purchase it (The P-40 is on my short list). There are several modern modules that I own that I never use in real combat roles. The Hawk is a lot of fun, but I have yet to even arm it. For many of us, it's more about enjoying the thought of flying and less about every detail being accurate. It's just not practical to think that any of these planes are close to their real world counterparts, there are just way too many factors involved. It's the nature of the beast. Just a curiosity question: How many of you guys come out ahead over the 109 in a P-51 more often than not? I cannot get a majority victory stat over it no matter what I do. But, I tend to be able to fly the 109 much better, even with it's unforgiving nature. -
Relative performance of the Mustang, the 109 and the 190
Zimmerdylan replied to Reflected's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
This is exactly where I am with DCS. I cannot pull from the Mustang any kind of performance that I am satisfied with. But I can push the 109 to it's limits and use it successfully and enjoy it. Is it historically accurate? It's really hard to say, but really.....who cares? I personally do not get much from the Mustang, and when I say that DCS sells it short, I'm only posting my opinion. The truth is that I don't have any issues flying any plane so long as I can feel good about what I'm doing. It's not WWII and we're not putting our lives on the line here. Thank God for that, or I'd of been buried and gone a loooong time ago. As for this variant of this and that variant of that on these planes. I think that ED certainly pays attention to much of these things but as in everything, there are differences from the sim and reality. This has been discussed on the forums over and over about every A.C. here. So I don't really pay much attention to the charts and graphs from this variation or that one. I pay more attention to what I can do with the A.C. and my experience with it in the sim. That's all that counts for me. -
Other flight sims go for the quantity. XPlane and FSX have a lot of add ons downloads, user designed planes and scenery, and lots of pay ware. I rarely fly either of them any more. What good is having tons of stuff to download, pay for, and add if it's all substandard and you find yourself settling for it. In DCS, any of the things that I may not like are due to design, or differences in opinion, or preference, not quality issues. When I fly other sims, I just hate the lack of attention to detail.

When it first came out, I definitely would have said no. But this plane has come a long way. It is now one of the planes I play around with the most. A lot of fun to fly and do missions in. Belsimtek really did some great work on the F86. And the Mig15 is something that you should seriously consider purchasing if you have not already. You'll find yourself struggling to keep up with it in the F86, but it's a lot of fun to blow the F86 out of the sky with the Mig15.
