  1. Go to this link's homepage and wait for the P-51 to cycle through. Click on the P-51. This link concerns the B-17: http://www.museumofflight.org/event/2012/may/19/boeing-b-17-ground-school I was there six years ago. They had a couple of sim-pits to get into, one even went upside down. It is a really cool museum. They added new stuff since I was there.
  2. I turn it off. I cannot think with it on setting stuff up.
  3. Yes, people make mistakes. A good opponent (real human) allows them one mistake and that ends their day.
  4. I'm looking for a good, active squad to fly this thing with.
  5. Make no mistake, on the defensive the AI are good. But I stay on their six and chop throttle a lot not to overshoot. I have not played with the editor, yet, to setup a scenario. Maybe the AI function differently in a pre-configured setup. I prefer not to attack on the HO (head-on) if fighting a real person. To me, that is bad sim, online ethics. After the 1st pass, all is fair, and no whining about it from either contestant when things go bad. I will run to get separation, but I will be back...
  6. In close quarters, in combat as a grunt, I love the 1911, .45 cal pistol. That thing will knock a guy down backwards at a full charge with all his gear on his back. Actually in really close quarters I like the entrenching tool---its a great weapon. I do not think the .50 cal machine guns in the beta have much hitting power. Imagine getting hit by a .50 cal flintlock musket ball. I sure killed that cargo plane, last night, one short burst, set at 600 feet, I guesstamated the wingspan was 70 feet.
  7. What I like about online aerial combat is real people THIMK. LOL! Wanted to see if you caught the intentional mispelling (misspelling). People are not very predictable, well some are, gaming psychology and all that. ============================ I would like to see an AI guy fight back, having the potential of killing me instead of just being a drone. ============================ Hey, the SAM missiles kill pretty good; I cannot even bailout, dead instantly. Is this attainable to DCS? Especially with the P-51?
  8. Instead of criticizing Aces High, why not post same to their forums and see what kind of response you get? You will get an ear full. Ditto with Falcon 4. Some guy there, from Italy, last year, was flying here and talking on Team Speak about the differences between the two flight game engines. He is an aeronautical engineer. According to him, Falcon 4 is superior. DCS is not the perfect sim. They do not model every aspect of the aircraft. Flat out, not every switch or radio does actually work. I love DCS, but hey...
  9. I would say basic flight school and landing properly trumps any combat training as to your quote. If you cannot get out of basic flight school, you will never advance to the combat phase of the process.
  10. Go do the Landing tutorial here within the DCS: P-51 within the program. I landed a perfect 3 point landing 1st time, without even braking until I turned off the runway. After many tries before doing the tute, my landings were not very successful, and yet to the other fairly realistic sim that also models P-factor and the other stuff, I fly the P-51 perfectly.
  11. I know what you are talking about. Imagine how much fun it would be with a Spit or Me-109 and their fragile landing gear systems as the 1st propeller plane here. The P-51D tutorials are very good. Just do them, one by one. The one on taxiing and following the jeep all around solved that stupid issue I was having.
  12. Hi, You usually have to start with setting up within the Windows game utility 1st, before fine tuning in somebody else's game. My CH Control Manager works that way at first, then my controllers are re-calibrated through CH Control Manager, then fine tune within both sims I play.
  13. Yep, about like that. I did not set unlimited ammo, but I used way more than was necessary. AI guy does not like being shot at, he makes it a good chase. I was whittlin' him down then a fireball. I think I took his wing off. My convergence was set for 200 yards. Just remember, if that center ball is not centered when you fire your guns the bullet stream is not going straight as intended. I wonder how accurate that aiming computer is and maybe lead the bogie ahead of it. I need to fine tune my Y axis pitch zone. I would like to know how to make a video like yours.
  14. I am curious. ED: How long have you guys been working on the P-51 since the 1st idea to do it? Or does one guy create this stuff for himself as a hobbyist and then say, I bet I can find other guys that would like this, and maybe make a buck at it, too.
  15. A few days later after experimenting. It always starts, eventually. One second is not long enough. They should give us spray cans of ether starting fluid. Have you seen the switch that adds gasoline to the oil to thin it out in really cold temperatures? LOL! Man, I love these DCS aircraft.
  16. Yes, those two switches (page 124 in the Flight Manual shows them) can be manually flipped up to automatic with using a mouse pointer. At first I tried moving them, I was moving the rudder trim wheel. So I thought they were there just for looks, as not all the stuff in the cockpit actually functions. The mouse pointer needs to be closer to the wall panel to engage the switches. I have seen some discrepancies between the manual and the onboard video tutorial. I use the video sequences. Like some of the other aircraft within the fleet, a lot of those checks may just be candy for looks or something to do for the diehard types. Well I can blackout to tunnel vision with the P-51 pulling too many Gs. So is running out of oxygen above 30,000 feet also going to cause giddiness before passing out if a switch is forgotten to be flipped?
  17. Talking to myself again: Yes, there are a few different airfields scenarios. One active map with multiple cons booted me off just as I was getting ready to taxi. The video tutorials are very good. Startup is good. Now I can taxi and follow that Hummer all over the airfield. The landing tute with the Flight Simulator type boxes to go through to final and landing was a perfect 3 point landing. My 1st real good landing with this plane of many attempts. I will repeat though, startup is a bit finicky. I think some of it is because the engine requires 12 turns of the prop and my 1st version I see no ground crew helpers. I don't blame them, who wants to turn a big prop 12 times, especially if it is raining? Sometimes the engine fires right up. Other times its like an old worn out car. Air combat within the tute is pretty good. I did not see any indicator in the cockpit of how many rounds were remaining. I did not set it for infinite ammo. I have not done all the tutorials, yet, but I will. =========================== Only real question I have is how to set the left and right brakes to get incremental braking? I don't want full on all at once. =========================== I will play with the Axis Tune. I am sure I have seen this done here in one of the other aircraft to DCS. One landing I did, works in the other sim, was a disaster here. As I landed I had full brakes on, left and right, I nosed right on over after some initial tire screeching. I have not seen any fire extinguishers, but I can bail out. I have no problems with stalls at all. It is actually hard for me to even force one. I have version 1 of the beta. My Multiplayer works and I finally saw one squad on, but it was locked.
  18. I only have started up here: Missions: P51-Camp1.miz in full sim, no cheats, manual cold start. Are there other airfields to start at? The startup process is kind of finicky like an old Willys Jeep with a manual choke on a cold morning.
  19. I have CH Products: Fighterstick, Pro Throttle, and Pro Pedals. I am using the .map Profile I use for Aces High, but modified to the DCS: P-51D. Everything is setup through the CH Control Manager. I have had one successful sortie since downloading the original beta 2 nights ago. I have flown just the one time. Hey, I did a Chuck Yeager roll! LOL! I have no curves or dead-zones set, yet. That is why I came to the forum to see what others are doing. Takeoff took three tries, but no wrecks or damage. I taxied S'ing to the runway. I mapped my propeller RPM to the Fighterstick's throttle wheel, set to full forward at takeoff and during flight. It is very sensitive to the throttle input. I had right trim rudder set at 6 degrees. I have left and right wheel brakes mapped and I use them a little for initially going straight down the runway. Very easy does it, gradually increasing the throttle. I did not do any pitch adjustment and the tail came up, but I did use one notch of flaps. I may need to make the throttle input less sensitive. I agree, it has too much gas in it. How to switch tanks to establish basic CG equilibrium without an automatic switching of fuel tanks? I guess I will figure it out. Once airborne, wheels up, flaps up, I reset to center my trim tabs. I have that mapped to the Pro Throttle's mini-stick push button. In flight I set my aileron and pitch trim tabs. This plane actually has working trim tabs, not like Aces High does it. I had no problems flying this thing at all but it does require constant playing with the trim which I set pitch and roll trim to the Fighterstick's 8 way hat. Rudder trim I set to a left/right hat button on the Pro Throttle. I do not have systems failures turned on, yet. I was flying mostly full throttle but trying to keep my inputs within the colored dial recommended settings. I did not do the tutorial or read much of the manual. I read Wags how-to quick startup to this thread, Message #5: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=87898 I also printed out the Flight Manual's pages 116 to 134, but I read them later. Landing was bit of a job and a little erratic. Its pretty cool, 400 mph, and one notch of flaps comes down instantly. I eventually came in full flaps over the runway, into the wind, and it was raining. I landed before the rubber markings where the tires meet the road. I bent a landing strut and tore off a right aileron and went sideways aways, but I was still on the runway. I came in about 125 mph. I consider the landing not too bad for a 1st landing. I should have flared more and basically stalled it a few feet over the runway. My experience flying the P-51 is Aces High. I will have to modify how I fly this thing in DCS. I fly full sim, no cheats turned on. Phooey with combat. My 1st goal is takeoff, flying the pattern properly, and landing. Later, touch and goes. I will do so until I get perfection. I love this thing! Best flight sim I have ever flown and I've been messing with flight sims since 1985. I am not a real life pilot, but I have stayed in a Holiday Inn Express a few times. I am not taking any updates, yet. I want to feel this thing out. I guess no autopilot in WWII except for the bombers? I was getting lost. I now have the kneepad map functions mapped. And F10 comes in handy. I think it is very important to at least have the basic flight controls pre-mapped into your controllers before leaving the runway. I will explore axis tuning. I suppose I should do the interactive video tutorials. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ED: Me-109 would be a great opponent. Please put the F4U Corsair on your list and a CV to land it on.
  20. Of course. You are basically not that far off from developing a product like in industrial manufacturing. Things always change and crap happens, all the time. What really sucks is to take on a job at a pre-set fee and a given deadline and things happen where no way is the time frame going to happen no matter what you do. I always told my bosses, you want a good job or a fast job? Of course they want both. Developing a prototype product is very time consuming. I have been with DCS about a year. I kind of see what projects you are working both presently and in the future. With the limited staff you guys have and the many projects you are attempting, I say you guys do pretty good. Always, somebody will not be happy.
  21. Will doing this, then save all my Options/CONTROLS settings? I have my CH Profile .map mappings for the P-51; I will not lose that on a new DCS: P-51D version upgrade. But I really do not wish to have to reset everything within the CONTROLS mappings.
  22. Yeah, you tell 'em. My feelings, too. For me I'm looking at about 6 hours. I will wait until the wee hours of a NY morning while most you'alls are sleeping.
  23. (re: Message #1) So, am I looking at 90 minute FTP downloads for each of the .bin files with the update? Can I load over what I have of 1.1.2.0? Probably best to do a fresh installation into a new folder. In order to add subsequent later patches, this patch 1.1.2.1 has to be loaded, correct? I tried the Torrent install of 1.1.2.0, it would not load one of the .exe files. I tried 3 times. The Http USA installer did not function. So I used the FTP1 USA source.
  24. The only thing I found in the 1st beta (1.1.2.0), in order to get the engine going in step #10, I dropped the Mixture Control to the bottom and it fired right up, then I set it to Run. It did not turn over 1st couple tries as instructed in step #10, so I re-primed it. I was in Full sim, no cheats, Missions: P51-Camp1.miz I would guess at this stage of development, an individual map might make a difference as to screwups. I have seen this to be true in other sims. This plane is much trickier taking off and landing than Aces High, but a lot of fun. Trimming it out flying it is also more realistic, of course. Nice! I love it.
