Spending time with Jim was always a joy and one of the things I looked forward to most when attending a business trip. Our dinner conversations always left an impression on me that I shared with friends and family, because they made feel a part of something special. He was warm and genuine, his stories were fascinating. It is truly a pleasure and an honor to have been his friend and colleague. We will miss you, Jim.

The Ka-50 as well. Well, I didn't claim they used only True. :) I don't know all of the procedures involved and to be frank, did not even realize the difference before just talking to one of our avionics programmers the other day, but there's no doubt that Russian instruments are capable of displaying magnetic headings and adjusting for magnetic variation. It is not the standard use however and requires the pilot to switch from True to Magnetic.
-
You can test it in Beslan as well, if you simply believe me. :) Not that I blame you for wanting to see it for yourself! With your suggested route starting directly over Beslan and flying directly toward Nalchik (I'm talking about the airports), in an Su-27 flying 286 as indicated on the ME will get you exactly there. In your original test you flew 289 and hence ended up a little east of the destination. Now if you try the same track in the A-10C, you will find it to be about 280.

Applaud your effort, but unfortuantely the map is deceptive and the implications incorrect. As I think you already know, the DCS map projection produces a coordinate error compared to reality, which increases as we move further away from the map origin, which is all the way in the center of the Crimea. To test your own experiment, try matching some track lines in the Crimea between identifiable landmarks, like shoreline points for example. I think you will find the ME ruler suddenly matching the headings on Google Earth. Try to do the same on the northwestern corner of our populated map, say between Anapa and something else, and you begin to see the error. By the time you get down to Beslan, well, you know the rest. :) In regards to cockpit headings in Russian a/c, it applies to both DCS and reality. You can check the magnetic variation on any point of interest on the map by placing a flyable A-10C there and and checking the CDU NAV>OPTIONS page. Assuming you have the module, obviously. It should generally be 6-8 degrees throughout the map. Also a good way to compare Russian vs. Western heading readings in the cockpit.
-
In Russian a/c the cockpit headings are True, not Magnetic. In the P-51, the compass shows Magnetic and the Gyro shows True. However to get an accurate magnetic reading on the P-51 compass, it must be in a level attitude. Sitting on the runway in a nose up attitude introduces a tilt error of a few degrees on the compass.
-
There's nothing special "going on". Just still testing the installers and trying to ensure they are as bug free as possible, that's all.
-
No, the manual is correct, though maybe not as clear as it could be. The magnetic compass, although experiencing some fluctuations while the aircraft is maneuvered, will continue to provide accurate readings once the maneuvering stops and the aircraft is returned to a level attitude. The directional gyro on the other hand, suffers from increasing drift ("precession") errors as a result of maneuvers and will quickly begin to provide incorrect readings unless manually reset by the pilot. However the problem is that this second part about gyro drift isn't working (i.e. modeled) in DCS Mustang at the moment, so the gyro continues to provide accurate readings throughout the flight.

Yeah, we've had quite a few of these in regards to how the sim handles headings. Sometimes ending about the same way as the video. Unfortunately not... Not all the airbases in DCS have the same error compared to reality. Some will actually be correct and match real charts, some will have a small error, and some will have a larger error. I believe you should have a collection of DCS-specific charts in the \\Doc folder of the install. Use those. You're welcome.
-
I understand what you mean, but DCS is not intended to include an exact model of each airbase. It's supposed to come close, but not necessarily match to each degree. The fact that Maykop is 218 Magnetic in reality doesn't mean that it is so in DCS. In the DCS world, Maykop has a True heading of 218, which you can see on the Mission Editor or F10 map. And so to navigate in DCS, you can use the Mission Editor/F10 map to get the True heading, then apply the magnetic variation to get the desired Magnetic heading in the cockpit.
-
That's your mistake - the runway has a True heading of 218, making the magnetic heading about 210-212, which is what you see on the compass.
-
From the devs: "After further investigation we have found that it a normal indication when the aicraft is not level (which is the case for P-51 when it is staying on the runway). The reason of such behaviour is in the direction of the total magnetic vector relative to the aircraft - 5-7 degrees West and about 60 degrees down." If you're not sure what that's about, as I wasn't initially: http://magician.ucsd.edu/essentials/WebBookse11.html Attaching screenshot showing correct magnetic indication when the aircraft is airborne and more level. How's that for realism? :)
-
No, I mean on DCS maps, like in the Mission Editor and F10 view. So if the DCS map tells you the runway is 218, in the cockpit it should 218 minus magnetic declination (6-8 degr).
-
The headings you see on the editor map/F10 are true (in-game), so in the cockpit you should be seeing the map heading minus magnetic declination, which should be about 6-8 degrees. To test you can try this in the A-10C and you will see the heading of the runway in the cockpit will be about 212, which is correct magnetic heading given the true runway heading of 218 in the game. This means there could be a bug in the magnetic course indication in the P-51D, unless it's some feature I'm not aware of. Investigating. P.S. The text in the flight manual was taken directly from the actual P-51D pilot's manual. That doesn't mean it can't be wrong, though.

We will be using the DCS site for now.

There is already an ED newsletter. I believe one will go out to announce the release of the Huey and v.1.2.4.
-
Typically we do in fact send out press releases and we have not done so for the Huey yet. I mean we did send out the original press release announcing the product last year, but have not sent anything out to announce its release. In nay case, though, that website should have been taken down as it is causing confusion.

Our current plans for additional equipment beyond what is included in the beta version are limited to the Reflex sight. Things beyond that are possible, but I would not expect it.

Thanks for the thread rescue. Price debate moved from this thread. Let's try to keep it that way.

Again, I hope nobody here feels that I am trying to mess with you. I had spoken with the team on Friday and they were hoping to have the final build ready, but didn't quite make it with the last couple of bugs. That's the "live" reality that was communicated here on the forum. In any case, I don't think this should cause any serious delays, but again, such things can and do happen, so as always, no promises.
-
Just so you guys know, as of last night (local Pacific US time) there were still a couple of bugs that needed fixing before we could go "gold" with the 1.2.4 and (open beta) Huey installers. We are very close, but not quite there.
