New 1.2 Screen Shots - 10 March 06
dynamocl replied to Wags's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
All this detail (check the rails/mirror bars on the APC) and self shadowing is making me very cautious, frame rates are gonna sink through the floor. http://www.lockon.ru/img/products/large/6b5e30e3891160e075a74a665525a082.jpg Looks very nice, and will be very good, just a shame we are going to need to rent time on a mainframe supercomputer to run it. Also note how the static (and one assumes low revs) rotor blades are flexing (i.e. not rigid and parellel with ground) In fact the ground vehicles are lookign very nice, I wonder if they will bring out a mod to allow you to take command of some armour or an IFV. Total integrated battlefield, with massive multiplayer capability anyone? -
Yeah, Lockon has (is) moving the right way from the arcady sim it first was, to something more like high fidelity. But they have already got our thanks - their pay cheques. (But I guess a little moral support doesn't hurt)

With the voice recognition software set to an ancient dialect of Chinease, and using an original Pentium 233 Mhz PC, with Voodoo 2 Graphics. (Advanced Haze on). (PS Jay - I didnt think the Su-25T had an afterburner to oscillate between on and off with :) )

You can use them like an angler fish does - have tried it before. Use the flares, run away and hide, wait for the enemy to come looking, bam - you got them. http://ramseydoran.com/anglerfish/deep_sea.htm Not the best tactic, especially since the SU25T (which is what I used) isnt the best for ATA. But, it makes the kiddies come and go wow - fireworks, and stare opened mouth at the pretty white fairy lights.... (sorry, rambling now).

This is not a poll...fantasy addon....

Yeah, the Harrier GR7 would add something completely new, not really done before. Certainly a very capable aircraft and a very good marketing point for a game - a fair few people will buy the sim just to fly the Harrier, other aircraft can be considered to be standard jets and dont hold the marketing punch the Harrier could. Plus I personally want to fly it, no bias of course :) -
Essentially lift (the upwards force an aerofoil creates) is created by the wing of an aircraft. It does this (as is currently believed) by a phonomenon called the Bernoulli principle. Essentially (without too much physics), in a uniformed flow (water or air) if the volume is kept constant but the speed of the flow is increased, pressure will decrease in relation to the increase of speed. What does this have to do with flaps? well just stick with me... Aircraft wings are generally curved. The reason for this shape is to change the path of the airflow. The top surface of the wing is a convex curve, the underneath can be convex or flat. Now imaginetwo "air particles" travelling towards a wing (or a wing travelling to them). One particle will travel over the wing, the other underneath. In order for these partcles to remain the same distance apart (horizontally), the top particle must travel faster (as it has further to go to keep up due to the curvature of the wing). Hence the air over the top surface of the wing has a faster speed than the air flow beneath. By using Bernoulli's ideas, it is clear that the air under the wing has a relativly higher pressure than teh air above. This difference in pressure causes a force (as the higher pressure tries to get to the lower pressure), this upwards force is called lift, and what allows planes to fly. Again what does this have to do with flaps? Well you already have the basics to put the theory together. Essentially flaps are surfaces at the trailing (back) edge of a wing. When extended they increase the curvature of the wing. Are you following whats going on....? So, as the shape of the wing changes, gets more curved, the air flow at the top edge gets faster (has a bigger curve to travel). Hence pressure under the wing increases, hence pressure gets higher = creates more lift. BAsicly, the flaps change the shape of the wing, causing more lift to be generated (and also decreases the aerodynamics and increases drag - slows you down). So flaps what do they allow you to do? Fly slower and generate more lift - so for slower speeds the wings still work (decrease stall speed). Using them at takeoff lets you get airborne at slower speeds (like taking off into the wind). And for landing - same again you can stay airborne at slower speeds with more flaps. Of course this is a simple (yup, really) view and it does get more complex. But I hope this basic understanding of principles of flight answers your question.

No, its just a tired old bandwagon, that most informed people stay clear of. Ordered one, but expect them to be write protected, maybe even a little bit of spyware :P

I got both my engines shot out online the other day by a SAM. No way I could have got my SU25T back home, so I located a decent road near by and glided down on it. Then the problems started. No SAR chopper was sent out for me, and no doubt the enemy would have captured me and stole my plane since I wasn't too far from the targets I had just been attacking. So, yes you can land, but you dont get much benefit from it.

are we there yet? are we there yet?

How come the previously released video was a "Black Shark Beta" video clip then??? -
They suprised me and released a FC demo, so maybe. Look at the development of FC and the time/release schedule for that demo, I would imagine using this as a guide would give some info.

Thats why the ejection system tighten the straps and drags in the pilot's arms and hands before being set off. Do you really think pilots are strapped in like Hannibal Lector in the movies??? Pilots are and do move around - they certainly can move their head, a lot more than the 6 inches it would take to give a lot better view than if it was static.

Just been browsing and found some clips: http://anthonyjhicks.com/ajh/media.nsf/albumview!OpenView&Count=999&RestrictToCategory=riat2003 I don't take any credit, I just stumbled on them. -
Try team speak?

NOOO, we dont want all of ED to become millionaires. They would all retire and go live in the Bahamas, leaving us with nothing. I have been playing a lot of flight sim 04 and it is just so natural to move to the left/right to look around the frame/struts in a cockpit to get an un obstructed view. You can also peer over the side almost putting your head out of the cockpit. I have lost count how many times I have tried this in an A-10 or a SU25 to get a better view of the ground and to look around, only to find the head stays almost static. I am not sure how I coped with FS before I had a track IR (Xmas pressy), and how I would cope with out 6 DOF. I am very much looking forward to it in BS, just wish it would also be done for the others (especially the ground pounders) (Wasnt there a poll around a while ago asking if we minded texture problems if they included 6 DOF for the vanilla aircraft? Was it also an official poll, or just one us mere mortals made?)

VVS504 Server downtime - Saturday 18th February

Speaking of stats, do they get saved constantly? When the stats were first anounced, I was on the board with a respectable 50 odd ground kills. I have flown a few occasions since, no kills recorded for me. (name not changed). Is there something I am not doing (or any other reason for stats not being recorded?) -
64 Bit chip or 64 bit OS... these are different, and you seem to have changed the question. Either way, AMD x64 chip will run 1.12, don't be so paranoid.
-
I have had my 64 bit system for almost 6 months, and I have not seen any incompatability with any software at all, and I use quite a bit. I beleive it is safe to say, any 32 bit application will be compatible with a 64 bit chip - I beleive AMD did a lost of work to ensure the "backwards" compatability was robust. On a seperate not, why not wait a bit and go for a duel core 64 in a few months when the price has dropped a lot - thats what I am doing (I assume you have brought a motherboard with future upgrades in mind)

I hope that the manual only comes out in Russian as well. Obviously if it came out in any other language it would be "unrealistic" since the flight manuals in Russia are in Russian. I also hope for there to be a check before install. The game will only install if you are in a certain height and weight bracket. i.e. no really short or really tall people, and no overweight people - since pilots have to be a certain fitness to fly, I think only people that meet this criteria should be able to use the sim - other wise it would be "unrealistic". Obviously eye sight and other medical conditions should be considered as well. Age limits absolutley must be included >23 and <45 otherwise you can't play - it's "realistic". Please remember it is a sim. an abstraction of real life... :)

Dont be pedantic chennuts, you should know Marines (maybe) arn't renowned for spelling. And anyway why do you say "hungry", are you getting doughts mixed up with doughnuts? Dought is phonetically closer to doubt than doughnut. In Falcon - all cockpits are just "skins" that mask over the F16 pit. So you can download a Tornado, F111 or F18 cockpit, you are still flying an F16, just the asthetics have changed.

maybe see cockpit lighting like this ...
dynamocl replied to diveplane's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
Just as long as you don't hope to look out side - with all those glaring lights, I bet even the runway lights are hard to see. -
As mentioned above - the gap is there on a lot of ramps. I actually find it is a good "feature". When my 25 first bobbled over and rocked (as if it had gone over a bump at an angle - which is what I did) I was quite impressed. After all, the runway/taxiway/service area are not perfectly smooth and have been gone over with a spirit level. I think its good. I only wish there were more of these to make taxiing a little more fun, i.e. bumps when you run over the "cats eyes" type lighting in the floor, and when moving over cracks/pot holes and differences in layed floors. You will get damage if you taxi around at take off speed (something very common with casual new people - very impatient, frustrating online as well - especially when someone takes off behind you when you are on the taxiway).

Visual Improvement of future Sim.
dynamocl replied to zaGURUinzaSKY's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
Just to add, in the lost coast demo, you can be in an outside area, facing the sun, your "eyes" adjust to the light and everything appears bright. You then walk into a dark alley, and you cant see anything because its too dark, a few seconds later, your "eyes" adjust and you can start making out detail in the tunnel. Again when you walk out of the tunnel into the sun, you cant see anything - its too bright, a few seconds later things get darker as the modelled iris closes. To be honest, it was a very minor effect, (and sorry HL fan bois), I found it to be a bit naff. I can imagine the physics unit will become important in about 2-3 years, then it will be useful for just a few more years (5 maybe) - after that the CPUs will then be quick enough to do the physics calculations back on board and make an off processor physics usint redundant... just a prediction. But imagine realisticly modelled buildings - modelled brick by brick - being hit by realistic modelled ordanance and reacting semi realisticly. May not be that spectacular in an aircraft - but imagine it from tank commanders perspective. Things can only get better. -
Remenber that B-52 flying kit? Its no more! :(

Its a very old video (welcome to the internet). The guys explained that when he was controlling it, he got diorientated and misjudged the horizon, the aircraft stalled, and he couldn't get control before hitting the ground. Nothing survived, the full length video shows the wreckage site, just lots of burnt corn, debris and some elderly/middle aged men crying. Rather funny really. If you look around on the net you will find loads of jet powered radio controlled model aircraft. There is a nice A-10 around, and you can't tell if its real or not when you see it flying (due to poor lack of scale judgment on our behalf). The model jet F-15s are very fast. Can't find teh good looking A-10 - but there are a few examples on this site. (look at the events photos) http://www.bvmjets.com/ -
Yeah, I had no problems what so ever using MasterCard. Easier than most online sellers actually, don't know what problems you guys are getting.
