Ladies and Gentlemen, the day in December that we've all been waiting for has finally arrived. No, it's not Christmas, The Virtual Festival of Aerobatic Teams starts today at 5pm GMT. Any virtual pilot interested in aerobatics will know the name VFAT -it is a name synonymous with quality, excitement and an anticipation; the weekend we've waiting for all year is finally here. Past VFAT events have featured many of the worlds most popular virtual aerobatic teams in a showcase of both real and fictional displays, solos and team acts, and this year is no different! Flying starts today at 5.00 GMT, kick ing off with Blaze and the F-16 Viper East Demo and features many popular solo and formation teams. The full schedule is available here For the first time, this years event is being streamed live right here on http://www.virtual-aerobatics.com - Virtual Aerobatics was founded in February 2013 with the aim of bringing the aerobatic community together and giving pilots a place to start. Over the last year, we've worked hard to develop VA into a comfortable community environment, both in our dedicated server and on our website / forums. We're thankful to the organisers of VFAT for allowing us to stream their show on our site - a true community effort. As a celebration of our VFAT coverage we have come together with several of our close friends, in both the real and virtual aviation world, to have several prize give aways throughout the 3 day weekend. Here are some of the prizes up for grabs: A Thrustmaster Warthog Stick courtesy of the Virtual Red Arrows Sponsored by Thrustmaster 3 Thrustmaster Gaming headsets again Thanks to the Virtual Red Arrows Some signed Black Diamond Jet Display Team Cards Thanks to the Virtual Black Diamond Jet Display Team 3 x 1hr Sessions personal tuition with one of more of the Virtual Horsemen 1 Pair of tickets for Flying Legends 2014 donated by The Fighter Collection at Duxford A DVD of Flying Legends from 2013 once again from The Fighter Collection at Duxford 1 x Mi8 Module for DCS from us at Virtual Aerobatics 1 x Flaming Cliffs 3 Module again from us at Virtual Aerobatics 1 x BaE Hawk Key kindly donated from VEAO Simulations We would like to express our thanks to all of sponsors for supporting Virtual-Aerobatics.Com through this weekend. How do I watch the show? VFAT 2013 is being streamed live on Virtual-Aerobatics.Com. You don't need any special software or flight sim equipment. All you have to is visit our live events page (http://www.virtual-aerobatics.com/live-shows) and the stream will automatically start - it's just like watching TV. How do I chat with other aviation fans? There are two text chat systems available on our live stream page. To the right of the stream is the official VFAT Chat - This chat can be turned off during displays to prevent the livestream from lagging. To use it, all you have to do is enter a username and you're away! The 2nd text chat is our own, virtual aerobatics private chat - only viewers watching on Virtual-Aerobatics.Com will be able to use it. Enter a username & Email address and you're good to go. This chat will remain active at all times so you can talk through displays. If you prefer voice comms, you could always join the virtual-aerobatics.com teamspeak server: virtual-aerobatics.teamspeak3.com (No Password) How do I know who's flying when? The full schedules for all three days are posted below the livestream and chat - just click the on the necessary schedule. How do I enter the competitions? Throughout the course of the weekend, we'll be hosting several competitions. Below the schedules in a simple contact form which requires your name, email address and your answer. Simply enter the necessary details and press submit! Please ensure that the email address is accurate as it is the only way we have of contacting you! I have some question about virtual aerobatics and formation flying, who do I ask? The great thing about VFAT is the atmosphere. There are always experienced virtual and real world pilots around that are happy to answer any of your questions about flying and generally shoot the breeze. Is there anything else I need to know? Nope, you're all set! But, if you do have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. We hope you're as excited as us about this weekends event and hope to see you there! VA Staff.

Great work! Can't wait to use this at Duxford when we go there to demo DCS :)
-
It's only inaccurate if you have the wrong equipment... There are floor mount modifications out there that would do the job, so why should ED change the stang? ;)
-
Too true - I'm afraid a lot of people are coming here from previous generation sims where you could be extremely violent with the stick and have little chance of stalling. From the conversations we've had with real P-51 pilots at Duxford over the last 12 months, they have all described the P-51 as a beautiful aircraft to fly but only (and this is the key clause) "as long as you stick within it's limits". I've seen reference to somebody who has flown DCS P-51 and the TF-51 and Stallion 51 in Florida and he mentioned the stall, saying that DCS in far more violent. In all reality, I just don't buy that. What he experienced at Stallion 51 was an almost, for lack of a better expression, a controlled stall. It certainly wasn't a high speed stall, pulling a lot of G, which you would experience in combat. I'm afraid, unless we find a way to integrate that seat of the pants feeling into sims, aircraft will always seem more "twitchy" - not to mention that the average PC stick is less than half the length of the real Mustang stick. Every pilot who tried DCS with us, that attempted the stall, said it was easier to deal with in the real aircraft because you can feel everything before it happens - Like riding a bike, you unknowingly make thousands of tiny adjustments as a matter of instinct. I don't fly combat, but I have had several mock dogfights with friends and we rarely stall - I do recall Roscoe Brown of the Tuskegee Airmen actually using the P-51's well known high speed stall to get an enemy of his 6 and shoot him down... I think what we're seeing here is a great deal of people who are surprised at the amount of effort it takes to fly this aircraft correctly. Given time, when you've learned the aircrafts limits, she's fantastic. The mark of any good pilot is to exploit his aircraft's abilities to the maximum. I do however, think the AI could be playing a part in this with it's simplified flight model... If your opponent is less disadvantaged than you, he should run circles around you - especially if you're new to flying the Mustang. I would only judge the Mustangs combat abilities on human v human experiences at the minute until the AI situation is improved. As a side note, what Pman said was correct. Most modern Mustangs have the rear fuel tank removed and a jump seat installed instead - Having fuel in the rear tank majorly affects the aircraft's CoG to the point that aerobatics was prohibited if you had fuel in there. There was an instance of a unit just receiving a new batch of Mustangs after flying Thunderbolts previously. One of the pilots took off, flew a roll over the field, lost control of the aircraft and crashed - The rest of the squadron didn't fly any aerobatics with fuel in the rear tanks after that. Rock

This is great - I was unaware that real P-51s developed a second flight model for combat! (Where's the switch to swap from aerobatic to combat mode? I must have missed that one in the manual!)

Nice work, Delayar :) I started this one a while ago but never got around to finishing it
-
The squadron codes certainly suggest it but, I believe, that the 328th FS had red rudders (like George Preddy's 'Cripes A' Mighty'. Do you know if this one is a historically correct scheme?
-
Looking good, Fred! From the squadron codes, I would assume 328th FS, 352nd FG. It seems to be a nice combination of features from the different squadrons of the 352nd. Look forward to the finished item :)

Indeed Rudel - Your Fantastic template of course :) -
Give us the template and I'm sure there will be plenty ;)

our beloved Pony-will it get even better?
VH-Rock replied to 9.JG27 DavidRed's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
Indeed, it was quite interesting that in pretty much all cases, the pilots never looked at the fuel shut off valve or the battery & generator switched either... We had Stevo Hinton (6 time Reno Air Race World Champion) trying to start the Stang and he just couldn't get her going. Alls we heard from behind was the booming voice of Stephen Grey "Come on Boy! It's stock cockpit - You should know better than that!" -
Hi Oscar, I currently use a Saitek X-52 Pro. I have a curve of 28 for Pitch / Roll and a curve of 17 for the Rudder. Anything else you need to know?
-
Will amend now, my apologies :)
-
Will do, at some point today :) *Edit* All done - will see if I can answer any questions over there
-
Indeed, So far, we know that Stephen Grey & Nick Grey (Owners of The Fighter Collection) have flown in the testing stage. Ed Shipley, Dan Friedkin, Steve Hinton, Stevo Hinton and Matt Nightingale (All regular Mustang pilots) have all flown it in our presence when we've done the live shows at Dux and all have absolutely loved it! I would tend to believe their feedback over anybody else's. For us to the formation aerobatics that we do in her, she has to be stable or it just wouldn't work. I wonder if they started shouting at bike manufacturers when they took the training wheels off their bike because it was to unstable? "That damn thing just wont stand up!"
-
Nice work, Chris :) Great to see the aerobatic community getting some well deserved publicity for their efforts :)

Hello All, Let me start off by saying I have next to no experience modding for DCS World or coding LUA files. I'm hoping somebody can point me in the right direction... I'm looking for a way to modify the camera system that DCS uses to make it more suitable for virtual aerobatics teams and their live shows. I want to make it so that when you're locked on to an aircraft from the ground camera (F11), switch to say a cockpit shot and then when you return to the ground camera, you're still locked on to those aircraft. (Rather than having to use the mouse to find them and lock on again). I'm sure I've seen this done before in FC2, but it would be extremely useful for us in DCS. Is it possible? Rob
