The most retarded portrayal of Harriers in popular culture.

Too bad Coca Cola didnt have a similar deal with China. It would have given a whole new meaning to the Cola Wars. :D -
Yes, thats what im doing for the same reason. In VR you can barely see the ball till you are almost on the deck. Im hoping the increase in performance in VR might make it usable further out when I can finally max out the graphic settings. I was sceptical about turning off the hud. But after an epic turn on the Dogfight server, where I lost a the HUD, an engine, no flaps or DLC and had to emergency deploy the hook and the undercart, I managed to land on the Kuznetsov. And whilst I would be the first to admit it broke damn near every rule in the book and the poor crew were heading for the lifeboats as they saw me on final, I did grab the center line. Which I never managed to do before when I was using the hud. So yes, while I need to experiment much more, I think the hud almost certainly is a distraction. It probably leads to overcontrol on the approach. Completely counter intuitive of course. But if its how the Jedi masters did it....

There was also the Pepsi advert where they offered a Harrier for large amount of pepsi points. Then when someone sued them to get his Harrier, they upped it to several millions more. :D -
I was reading a good book on the early Topgun the other day, and they found that with the F4 phantom that at high angles of attack it was a good idea to roll with the rudder. Ive tried that in the F14 flight model, and it does work for minor adjustments. It seems to me if you are pulling g's trying to pull lead on someone, adjust with the rudder. If you have a greater adjustment to be made then use, use the aileron as well, but it doesnt seem to be a great idea for minor adjustments. I guess because the spoilers are acting as speedbrakes and are actually reducing your speed, which gets critical as you get nearer to a stall. Food for thought, or am I talking nonsense?

Sounds good to me, just as long as its going to shake my fillings out if I make a silly mistake. :D -

Can anyone recommend a good chair? I looked for one on Amazon but they dont seem to sell any. Jetseat from what I can tell online seems to be unavailable or no longer produced. -
Is it me or is the F14 getting owned in multiply Player?

Got to say, great thread, and thanks for the Tactview of the F15 engagement. ive yet to try this in multiplayer, but there is some stuff there whcih has proven very useful against the AI. I bagged an F18 the other day with guns. Not a very pretty engagement because I did about 9 G and lost some systems. Still, a kill is a kill. This has some useful information on it as well. There are a few on youtube like it, not least the Falcon 3 ACM briefing 'The Art of the Kill'. -
Update to the latest version. Ive not had the problem since. Ive been playing for the past hour and its been rock solid.

Thanks for that, Ill give it a try. Should be good for training at Nellis.

I guess its a real shame we dont have Fallon then. :( Thanks, just wondered.

Just as a matter of interest, how did they train Tomcat pilots on this before they went to sea? Did they have arrays put up to train them at some naval bases, or was this all done in the simulator? I was hoping to practice ICLS on a runway without going to the boat first, but if that's how the varsity team did it....

Personally, I like the new tone, its like its screaming at you because it wants to KILL something. :D As for why they sound different, maybe its just a set of different helmets in use by the USN? If the sound output was different, that perhaps that would account for the different pitched sound? The ones that come up on ebay look different to USAF ones, at least to me. https://www.ebay.co.uk/cln/victory201/us-navy-flight-helmets-the-real-stuff/69861122013

Thanks fellas, for what is undoubtedly the best DLC Ive flown in years. I hope its brings you much further success.

Yep. They do already have an option where Jester can give altitude readouts when landing after all, and I find that very helpful. As we can see from interviews, its not as if it would be unrealistic or gamey, they really did this kind of thing. Its perfectly true you can get some idea of speed from the aircraft (or at least, angle of attack) and the noises it makes. But someone acting as a phonic speed readout would be useful in ACM I think. Im getting there I might add, but using vr its helpful to have as many ques as you can get. Its not THAT easy to read the speedo when you are in vr, even less so when your F14 start shaking like a belly dancer in protest at your poor flying. :D -

Regarding the speed, I too dont want anything unrealistic on the hud. If thats how it is, then thats how it is. I would suggest one compromise, in Dave Baranek's 'Top Gun Day's', he mentions when at Top Gun, his pilot requested he make speed calls ever few seconds or so, so he knew his energy state, but could keep his head out the cockpit. Maybe that would be an interesting option to ask Jester? If he isnt too busy making witty epiphets or telling you that you are about to die that is. I accept that would be a big update, but think, you are only talking about a narrow speed range between 400 and 200 knots, maybe about 5 knot increments. Just a thought. -
Credit to the author, its an excellent package that brilliantly fits the aircraft. It also fits very neatly back to back with 'Danger Zone' which is now also on the walkman.

Yes, ive a book on NATO air weapons that confirms that. I also think it says Jaguars (Or was it Tornado's?) used Mk20's for high altitude attacks, for which they were better optimised than BL755. Id like to see a Harrier with BL755. But I have to admit, I cant think of a single occasion they have actually used them, which is what you would need to do to be able to make a case I would assume. Blame the USMC for lack of foresight. :)

Id pay for a fully clickable Mig29 if they ever offered one. But yes, I can understand they dont want to waste too much time on this until (if) they ever do. I must get the F86, thats quite funny. :D

I just tried it again on multiplayer, and it seemed to do a bit better. But im not sure if that was because the target was flying higher than me and was easier to pick up. He was also advertising his presence by having his ecm on. Im not sure if its me and still grappling to get to grips with this radar, or there is a real issue here. But it didnt seem to be this difficult to adquire targets flying the Su27, even allowing for its greater detection range.
-
Seeing as we already have a Tactical nuclear weapon in the Mig21 pack, Im thinking it would be an interesting idea to have one of these (a 30kt weapon) to deploy from the 9-12. They were supposedly used in a TNF role in East Germany. Contentious Im sure, but lets face it, such weapons are a reality. And it would be one more thing to learn with the Mig29 in the sim.
-
I got to say, im having a tough time getting any range out of it. I can understand the A model being fairly poor, but even the S model with an upgraded radar its tough to find anything in BVR mode much beyond 15 klicks. I know about the range gate and the different radar modes, but it still feels difficult to get any decent range or BVR capability out of it. Maybe this is perhaps a case for less including a modification to the radar, than perhaps a dedicated training mission for the Mig29? Id happily pay for a good training campaign for it if ED produced one.

Not sure if this is the right place to put it (and apologies if it is not) but I thought everyone might find this as interesting as I do. It is a UH1F, but clearly the missions are similar to what can be achieved with the H. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNJ1-RUIVuQ&index=3&list=PLCsWdID6xqWnbSu9HCJoOMUaUOgk56fps

Thats a LOT better. But Im still not seeing a lot of evidence for hull down positions. Not that every place in the world offers them, and Iraq was a pain unless someone had put in some decent prepared positions. Only one way I can see this working. Have a hifi digital terrain to operate the tanks on, then have all positions generated on the map the aircraft uses. Would create some odities, but at least it would stop the map the aircraft use slowing to a crawl.

Much as I would like to see infantryman you can 'play', I dont see it as viable in a sim this size. I mean an infantry battalion is what, 600-800 men? Try playing THAT on multiplayer. You are better off simulating platforms. Now infantry attached to IFVs strikes me as viable, and Steel Beasts has proven that it is. So you move away from an infantry centric sim to one that is more combined arms based. Infantry company would have what, 14 IFVs? A battalion something like 50. Not perfect, but certainly more viable in my view. Ultimately it comes down to terrain. I dont see a tank sim based on the terrain of georgia being very impressive. The Nellis range, well, that COULD be much better. Presuming the EDGE terrain system works as advertised. I think a tank in a decent terrain system thats shared by combat aircraft would be viable. Certainly vs KA50 anyway. After all, inside of 4000 metres even attack helicopters can be vulnerable to tank main gun rounds. Particularly APFSDS. Combined arms is clearly a step forward. But more commandable vehicles and more control of tactical units would be definately the icing on the cake as far as Im concerned. I dont want Arma. Steel Beasts with A10s and larger maps would be more my thing I think.
