Virpil CM2 vs. Warthog Throttle (only)
zcaa0g replied to msmith301's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
There is no one better than the other, but I stuck with the Warthog due to the quickly swappable detentes that are sold on Shapeways and better "clicky" button responses. With that said, the DeltaSim Electronics analog slew control is a must for the Warthog throttle IMO. My ideal throttle would be a be a combination of the two throttles. Can't really go wrong with either though. I just didn't like using software based detentes on the Virpil. -
The people that break the Warthog sticks are the same ones that when they were 5 years old, petted a dog by slapping the dog hard repeatedly on the back instead of gentle, read normal, brush strokes because they didn't know any better and were doing it wrong. Yes, the metal is cheap garbage, but really?

Hm? That's why I said "light". And a Husky a-1bd, Commander 690b and Citation II say Hi. Every force feedback joystick had a centering spring strength option and it was terrible as it always tried to estimate the center. We are not talking real aircraft and in the end, these are games, even DCS.

I would like to see a force feedback joystick with a light centering spring instead of being centered by the motors. That was always a bad concept IMO.

Virpil Throttle afterburner detents (3D printed)
zcaa0g replied to SneakyBastd's topic in VIRPIL Controls
Better than nothing I guess, but I wish Virpil would have gone with the Thrustmaster Warthog detente method. The ones on Shapeways work great for a variety of different scenarios and have a far more cleaner look. I am sure Virpil will revisit in the future because they are the kings of frequent revisions. :-) -
So I guess only one CM2 grip was created in this batch. Geez. I guess I will have to get the VKB base as my 3rd base to get a grip with several more button functions than what is common. I don't know why anyone would want the CM2 grip as it is far too tall for anyone in this world except me. Give it up! :-) Not bitter or anything.

I had this problem earlier this week when doing a fresh OS install and DCS and IL2 and some other games had this problem, but interestingly enough, not all games did, nor was it a problem in general Windows usage. Anyway, I removed all devices under keyboards in the device manager and then did a device rescan and all was well. The fresh OS install picked up two non-existent Logitech keyboards which may have been the culprit but I pulled everything just to cover the bases. Also, keep an eye on that behavior potentially happening from Win10 servicing updates going from one build to the next or even "simple" OS security updates.

Suggestions for New Rudder Pedals
zcaa0g replied to panton41's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Another vote for the Crosswinds. Lots of adjustability and zero problems since the product's debut a number of years ago now. -
Warthog: -Longer throw -Swappable detente options -Better button response than Virpil throttle -Slew stick sucks so need to do the easy modification by DeltaSim Electronics. -Far less button options than Virpil throttle. Virpil: -Shorter throw -No detentes and aftermarket solutions are shoddy right now, but could change but due to design, won't ever be better than Warthog options on Shapeways. -Far more button options than Warthog and has rotaries, etc. -Buttons not as responsive as Warthog imo In the end, one is not better than the other outside of what one is looking for in a throttle. I would like a marriage of both some day.

I received it a few days ago and the process was effortless. Well done on the instructions and design. I was so impressed in fact that I ordered another since I use 2 Warthog throttles. In what can be an expensive hobby at times, this product is a very good value. And shame on Thrustmaster for using a Sony PlayStation Portable analog stick for the slew control. It really is that bad in turns of quality. It's literally an undersized flat disc with a worthless slippery nub on it.
-
A virtual detent is hardly a suitable replacement for a physical detent or detents. A big step up from the Warthog throttle is nothing more than opinion. A big step up in QA issues perhaps. Sticking with the Warthog throttle, Black Hog add-on and a variety of detent options in Shapeways.

Given the serial numbers of recent grips and bases received, the supply issues are far more due to the numbers produced or lack thereof than the level of demand. These are not assembly line produced like Logitech and Thrustmaster so they are literally produced by hand about 50 to 200 units per round of ordering. I fortunately got what I needed from them with the bases and grips sans the Alpha grip which I will just have to be patient for. I'm just glad I don't like their throttles past or present as those seem to be the biggest challenge to get apparently but other people do like them so I can understand their frustration.
-
Multiple PCs, got it. I was just curious because they really don't have a large enough portfolio of devices to hit that number with a single PC even with redundancy and grips factored in. At least until they get to the helo devices, but maybe the should focus on current issues (device failures and stock levels) before moving on to new devices such as those.

How can you even spend over 4000 euros on their site? Even with multiple bases, a couple of throttles and all of their grips, that would be hard to reach. And it's not even possible to spend that much there right now since they are out of everything expect the WarBrd base, base plates and springs. :-)

Hello. I found the dimensions of Virpil's previous generation throttle but not the new one. Anyone know the new one? Thanks.

TVs are very viable solutions these days unlike where they used to be. Check rtings.com for information and reviews regarding input lag, quality, performance, etc.

Has Logitech quit HOTAS production...?
zcaa0g replied to Shaky's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Yep, the Virpil and VKB bases are far better than the Thrustmaster base, but the Thrustmaster grips are far better than the Virpil and VKB solutions, especially in terms of button response although VKB's buttons are better than Virpil's. I just wish Thrustmaster had more than the A-10 and F-18 grips. My favorite buttons and hat switches are still the CH Products which are solid and "clicky", but that's where it kind of ends with them and CH has been in cruise control for over a decade now. Unfortunately, they all have their trade-offs, but it works out pretty well when combining a Thrustmaster grip on a Virpil base. -
I'm right handed, but I prefer to have the trackball on the left side. That way, the right hand can be on the flight stick at all times and only have to take the hand off the throttle when wanting/needing to use the trackball. The Kensington Expert wired or wireless trackball works really well as the ball is in the center as opposed to the left or right side and the scroll wheel in intuitive for zoom or dial rotation functions. And it really is more convenient and comfortable to have a mini-keyboard between the flight stick and throttle regardless of center mounted or side mounted that way it is still facing toward you and not off to the side.

The link below should be straight from Amazon's warehouse and not a 3rd party seller. It's priced higher than normal at $580, but that's due to there only being 6 left in their current stock. I doubt they would be exiting after just releasing the F-18 grip just last year. https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-HOTAS-Warthog-PC-BL/dp/B004I5XB4K/ref=sr_1_11?keywords=Warthog+throttle&qid=1581524631&sr=8-11 As a test, I added the above to the card and it was... Order Summary Items: $579.95 Shipping & handling: $0.00 Total before tax: $579.95 Estimated tax to be collected: $47.85 Order total: $627.80 This is $382.46 and is supposedly new, looking at the page unless I am missing something, but won't ship same day/next day/ 2 days like the one above: https://www.amazon.com/ThrustMaster-2960720-Thrustmaster-Hotas-Warthog/dp/B00371R8P4/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=Warthog+throttle&qid=1581524865&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&sr=8-7

The numpad is on the mini-keyboard, you just have to use the toggle key to switch to it. It's fast as in hit the toggle key, press the desired numpad key and then hit the toggle key again to go back to the full mini-keyboard keys. It's a quite valid option, but with that said, I really don't have to use it due to Touch Portal (100+ keys on a single page times whatever number of pages you want to use) which is right behind the mini-keyboard along with the 32 button Elgato Steam Deck which is in front and just to the right of the keyboard.
-
Toggle key for numpad that is consolidated on the mini keyboard is one way. The other way is Touch Portal on an tablet I am using and a Elgato 32 button Stream Deck. :)

Most reliable HOTAS/joystick for DCS?
zcaa0g replied to Mjm8710's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Virpil and VKB are still too young to determine if they are reliable yet. In another 5 years, we'll know. I still view them as being at the Fanatec stage in the early 2010s. As far as whether they are worth taking a chance on or not, yeah, I think so. I've had the Warthog since early in its inception and never had the "stiction" problem that has been mentioned and that I have seen in YouTube videos, but I have had a mylar dust shield over the gimbal area since day one and probably just lucky. I've also had the CH Fighterstick and Pro Throttle USB versions for almost 20 years now (I think it's been about that long for the USB variants) and the throttle quadrant since its release and they are still as good as when I bought them, so I can't speak to whether CH Products is still the same CH Products they were since they were bought out awhile back. -
"1) The material. The VPC pedals are all metal and the Crosswinds are not." Which really isn't of consequence if you are familiar with the MFG Crosswind's design and build in person. And the Crosswinds will never have an issue with paint wearing thin, flaking, getting scratched, etc.

Ergonomically sound keyboard and mouse input layout in relation to the HOTAS is exactly why I didn't go with a center mount (this is different for everyone obviously). My preferred layout from left to right is trackball, throttle, mini mechanical keyboard, stick and finally, mouse. With that said, even with a center mount, you should be able to rig up something to the left or right of your center stick based on your preference. I would go with a mini or tenkeyless mechanical keyboard though so everything is more in reach from left to right regarding the keyboard. And with the Cherry MX patent expiring a few years ago, mechanical keyboards are cheaper than ever and by a lot of different manufacturers. I'm using a Keycool 84 with brown switches and with green LEDs to match the Warthog throttle green LEDs, but that model of Keycool are hard to find anymore, but there are several other manufacturers to choose from: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=mini+mechanical+keyboard&ref=nb_sb_noss_2
