The Official "Where's my Update" Thread
Merlin-27 replied to Revvin's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
I think you missed the essence of the majority of replies. From what I see, no one is asking for more than regular communication. From my perspective it is a reasonable request from financially tied members of the community. I am not trashing or bad-mouthing anyone and i'm pretty sure we all want RRG to be successful. -
Haha that is great. I whole-heartily believe in that philosophy. Sold my soul to DCS/RRG First rule of Flight Club: you do not talk about OTHER flight clubs. And of course rule 7: Flights go on as long as the have to. :)

The Official "Where's my Update" Thread
Merlin-27 replied to Revvin's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
I'm trying to avoid participating in any panic inducing posts on here and I'm a pretty patient guy but I did indeed ask within this forum, in a couple of locations, the status of the weekly dev meetings...with silence as the response.:music_whistling: It is still early in the process but I'm sure we'd all like things to proceed in an organized professional manner. To be honest, I had expected to at least be contacted sometime after the Kickstarter ended by an admin or assistant of some capacity. I think emailing at least the people who offered up $500 and above would be appropriate. There are a bunch of us. -
Here is the map after lamination, the steel sheet is in place and a few painted magnets. It's moving right along. I think a nice wooden frame would finish it off nicely.

This is a thread for a DCSWWII:E44 project of mine or others like it. I purchased the large format Normandy map from McElfresh Map Company. Pretty great overall view of the region. Then I came up with an idea to laminate it, frame it, and add a thin steel sheet behind it so that I can place magnetic markers on it. I think it will come in handy for mission planning/mission creation and general familiarization. Here's a shot of the initial paper map.

Not a single guess? Hint: highest scoring group in the ETO.

Looks great!

Yes the opposite side of the map has some great info on the map making and model making effort for the allies preparing for D-Day. I spoke to Earl, who created this great map, and asked him if he recommended any other research materials to help our cause in creating the most accurate Normandy terrain ever. His biggest suggestion was to try and find the many many stereoscopic aerial photographs that are hidden away somewhere. This would proved some very good 3D data of the area. It would require someone to scour some archives in the UK I presume. Any takers?

I agree. MP is the priority control. Prop RPM will be more subtle changes. For now, I have the RPM on an analog wheel potentiometer on the throttle handle and it works great.

Awesome project! Kudos to you both. Turning out pretty awesome. It'd be cool if you could incorporate two vent fans or something in place of the gun for an extra dimension. Can anyone 3D print the GAU-8?

Thanks for checking, Echo! I hope that resolved it, David.

DavidRed has had some trouble seeing my server on the master server list? Anyone else having difficulties finding it?

I couldn't resist doing a little WEP test tonight. I jumped on the server and grabbed an air-start P-51D in my Battle in the Bay mission. It's a summer map with an air temp of 28 C. I descended to 3 thousand feet and engaged WEP (67"/3000). Flew to the Gudauta radio tower and flew a tight right hand circle around the tower trying to maintain 200mph indicated with an altitude of 500-1000 feet using combat flap setting. I maintained this turn for 15 minutes. Airspeed varied from 220-180 mph. I then broke off and flew a gradual left-hand turn for 5 minutes then returned to the radio tower and started a tight left hand turn with the same parameters as the previous circle. After 5 minutes of the left hand turn around the tower I flew out over the Gudauta airfield and started climbing. At around 7,500 ft the engine seized. I then performed a dead-stick landing at Gudauta and parked. Total continuous WEP time before failure: 29 minutes This is almost twice the recommended time for Full Military Power. Just sayin':music_whistling: Side note: I did have the coolant radiator Full Open as I typically do in a fight. The oil radiator was left in Auto.

THIS post made me realize why we were not seeing eye-to-eye on the topic. My initial response was not directed towards the top tier virtual pilot. That group should not need too many pointers about WEP within a thread named "Finally I fight without blowing my engine." My concern was with the suggestion to P-51D newcomers that WEP is needed for each A2A encounter. Along with that I spoke on the view that WEP is a little more forgiving within DCS than I had expected, which consequently allows it to be used like a "turbo" button.

Maybe I shouldn't have used the word long-term. The stresses on the engine internals is the most dangerous side effect of running WEP for extended durations (In RL) as far as I understand. As far as the sim, well we've seen on many occasions, instances where you can run WEP almost indefinitely, turning flat, with no damage to the plane. How is this accurate when the official recommendation is to not use it for over 5 minutes? DavidRed posted a thread about this not long ago. I'm not disagreeing that WEP gives you some level of improved performance, only that its regular use by virtual pilots is a departure from real-world practices. Of course, the respect is on both sides of the table, Echo. :) I see what you are saying and I don't doubt that you are able to use WEP effectively. I myself am not the ultimate combat pilot in the DCS skies, however there are maybe 3 or 4 virtual pilots that I've flown against that, when equally matched, I could not out-turn without using WEP. This is out of a sampling of 100+ opponents so far. And with that I use the combat flaps very often, so I assume I do just as much "turn-fighting" as you but I do actually use them without WEP. I agree with you that the visibility issues keep me close to my adversary most of the time. The risk of losing visual generally outweighs the inherent risk of burning all your E chasing the guy on the deck with his rudder kicked. So, my over-arching point/opinion remains that I see using WEP full-time akin to choosing unlimited ammo. If you can use WEP... which is an engine setting reserved for emergency situations during which it pushes the powerplant to its uppermost limits, throughout your fight, then something is not quite right. I endured an aggravating ankle injury for about 5 months that had me worried I would have to hang up my pedals...but that seems to be coming around finally. I'm hoping your hand also heals up soon, or maybe you can procure some bionic alternative. You are always welcome to come over and "throw down the gauntlet" and the day I see "Echo38 has entered the game" on my server will be a glorious one indeed.

I think there should be official update sticky threads so that we don't have to try and discover any updates delivered aside from the KS page. (Like Wags does) Can't blame us all too much for being eager to see any small tidbits of progress. It has been 11 days since the last official DCSWWII:E44 development release on the Kickstarter page, as far as I know. It was also stated that there was plenty we had no seen yet so content is apparently there to keep the villagers from grabbing pitchforks :D I myself am ok with one solid weekly update on maybe Friday or over the weekend.

If you want them to stay open make sure you don't close the switch cover. That will push the switch to AUTO. Take a close while on the ground.

I don't think people need WEP as much as they think they do. It appears that the real-world effects of War EMERGENCY Power are not fully modeled within DCS. However, It is extensively documented that heat is not the only detrimental effect of pushing the engine to these points. I personally think it's a bad idea to get in the habit of using WEP in every dogfight. You can perform on par or better than the AI without WEP. I have it mapped on my throttle but hardly ever feel the need to use it.
-
Well, I see your point but how many times has a placebo effect kept your DCS P-51D flying after overheating? It was never stated that this was the recommended way to cool your engine but it did occur in more than one instance and this particular pilot Godfrey, who was no slouch by any means, turned his hand into a raw piece of meat operating the primer pump manually ALL the way back to England. Something tells me that placebo would have worn off if it didn't have a direct observable result (especially when he was crossing the channel) Keep in mind he was in the process of bailing out of his airplane in enemy territory and then agreed to give this a try. We will probably never know what got him back home but it's a pretty incredible story.

TRIVIA: Anyone know the US Fighter group that went most of the war with the guns/bomb button arrangement opposite of the US standard? Theirs was bomb/drop tank release with the trigger and guns operated by pressing the "tit" on top of the stick. I wonder the approximate number of holy shit moments that occurred when new pilots trained in the states pressed the button on top of the stick to release external tanks and got a fiery six M2 salute.

Roger sir. I just simply found it an interesting bit...no matter what the finer details may be. No intention of inciting a riot :) I think we are all proud to have a sim where discussion of things like this are even an option.

I would love to fly the Hellcat in DCS!

Of course, from another of my "inquiring minds want to know threads" lol Fuel Vapor Return Thread It's in the P-51 manual somewhere. EDIT: Found it...
