  1. I would also like to express my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Igor.
:);):music_whistling:
  5. Please stop spreading the fairy tale that it was unreliable. Not very useful in daily training, yes, unnecessary, yes, but certainly not unreliable.
  6. Hmmm, different countries, different stories I guess :)
  7. The system stayed inside the aircraft for balance reasons. This information comes from a former GDR air force pilot and flight instructor who was based in FAG-25 Bautzen where all GDR pilots were trained on L-29 / L-39. He also lectured at the Military Academy. His name is Dr. Rainer Goepfert. The reasons for being disconnected were not "frequent faults", but other reasons as I already wrote here: https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=3327513&postcount=78 I'm not stating this is 100% correct, but I guess a man like him should know what he's talking about.
  8. The GDR ones had the systems installed and used. Later on, it turned out that they were pretty useless for their intended use (firing IR missiles), so they were disconnected, but left inside the aircraft for weight reasons.
  9. Has anybody found an answer to this? Why hasn't the SRD been implemented?
  10. Well, that would literally mean I spend even more money for a product I've already paid for - just to get it finished. Because I don't GAF about the CE II.
  13. Weapons panel: http://home.snafu.de/veith/MiGs/L-39ZO_Panel.jpg I don't know, the L-39 pilots over at Flugzeugforum may answer that question, but that's not the point here. I'd like to fly the plane that's closest to the ZO, which is the ZA and not the C.
  14. Exactly. Plus, the cockpit of the ZO is more ZA-like. The whole structure of the ZO is more ZA-like (weight, fuselage reinforcements, etc). The ZO is practically a ZA with the guns removed.
  15. Yeah but there's no NVA skin for the ZA (correct me if I'm wrong) which is much more similar to the ZO then the C. And there's also no V skin for the C.
  16. May be OT, but the NVA didn't fly the L-39C anyway :music_whistling::smilewink:
  17. Actually, only the training missile R-3U was being used for training. This missile recorded all data like target distance, g-forces, speed etc. and could be analyzed after the flight. The conditions for shooting the real R-3S could never be achieved: The minimum speed for shooting this missile was Mach 0.8. This speed could only be obtained in a dive. At this speed though, the speed brakes would extend. At the same time, the pilot would have to keep the target for 3 seconds within the missile head's 3° detection angle in a range between 1200 and 4000 meters without exceeding 2 g. That conditions were practically impossible to achieve, so in 1983 the missile training was completely removed from the training plan and the radio rangefinders were decomissioned. The conversion to the R-60 missile was being discussed, but not realized. -> Taken from the book "Strahltrainer L-39 Albatros" by PPV which was written by a former GDR flight instructor :book: Edit: I don't know where this "Minimum R-3S speed - Mach 0.8" comes from, but I will keep researching :)
  18. Cool, thank you. Do you know if the KVANT was replaced by a different rangefinder? Or is there simply no rangefinder installed on "our" L-39?
  19. Hi guys, a few questions that came to my mind lately: 1. At this picture (and many others) you can see the range scale for the radio range finder, on the right hand side of the gunsight. Where is that range scale on "our" L-39's? -> https://www.flugzeugforum.de/data/attachments/751/751747-de2f624d4106b33821a68fbf8dfd775c.jpg Edit: Has the radio range finder been implemented at all? 2. East German pilots keep telling that there was only a small time frame for shooting the R-3S missile, because the minimum speed for shooting the R-3S was just a little bit below the maximum aircraft speed (where the airbrake is being engaged automatically). Doesn't seem to be the case in "our" L-39's. Any thoughts about this?
  20. Thanks for that valuable information, Martin!
  21. That did the trick, thank you so much! How do you know? I didn't find that explanation about the AOA lamp in the manual. I've only found the bits about the AOA and speed limitations. Thanks again!
