Oh, and it does turn horizontally at below 250 km/h. Like this! (complete with a close call and an emergency landing :D) You can get a little more stick pull by making sure the trim is fully back! Minimum Speed Turn.trk
-
But of course! You always use full afterburner if you want maximum performance. Cutting the power at any point means lost energy, so the reason for doing that better be good ;)

Hmm, I never tried using the wheel brake button for slow speed turns, but it may work while providing good stability. I guess I've been perfectly satisfied with the performance of direct control in that regard.. gun shots from cobra are the best! :D
-
Holding wheel brake button allows the joystick to move a bit more back, providing about 1 G extra in high speed turns. It simulates pulling the stick beyond the "normal" limit. But why it is simulated like this, don't ask.. but it works, try it!
-
For minimum radius turn, direct control ON and pull as hard a turn as you can. As long as you don't completely stall by jerking the stick too hard, but instead ease into the turn swiftly but in a controlled manner, there really is almost no minimum speed, you can go extremely slow! About 250 km/h in the horizontal, and perhaps 100 km/h or less when coming over the top with gravity assist.

No, don't use the flaps, they are only useful for takeoff/landing. In maneuvers, the flaps move automatically to some extent, and that is enough :) I can recommend some airspeeds and other things for different maneuvers in Su-27. Note that during some maneuvers I recommend using the direct control mode (keyboard S key to toggle by default, bind this to your joystick!) These speeds are for sea level: Sustained horizontal turn: 600-800 km/h (direct control OFF for stability). Maximum performance instantaneous turn: 1050 km/h, pull hard straight up (fully vertical), then direct control ON once joystick pull is established. This maneuver is very extreme and can result in blackout or loss of control. Maximum performance energy-conserving turn: 1050 km/h, hold down wheel brake button (W key by default), pull hard up, or slightly to the side (oblique). For more horizontal turns, use slower starting speed. Once airspeed falls below 800 km/h you can release wheel brake button and continue with a turn of your choice. This maneuver risks blackout!! Slow speed turns and loops over the top(<400 km/h): direct control ON for extra nose authority, unless sustained turn is desired in which case maintain airspeed or slowly accelerate to 600+ km/h and direct control OFF. Note that during vertical maneuvering using direct control can provide an extreme turn rate boost if airspeeds are lower than optimal for sustained turn. Whenever extra nose authority is needed to take a shot(missile or gun): direct control ON. Cobra from straight and level flight (aerobatic): 350-400 km/h, throttle idle, then simultaneously pull hard and direct control ON. Once nose starts to settle back down, direct control OFF, increase throttle and gently pull stick back to stop nose from falling below horizon. Cautions when using direct control: -Don't enable direct control in straight flight, but only after positive G pull has been established. Otherwise nose-down attitude and subsequent negative G may lead to an unrecoverable flight state. If straight flight is required, set direct control OFF. -Be very cautious when using direct control with full internal fuel tank. The aircraft is prone to becoming uncontrollable at high positive angle of attack. With half or less fuel, this problem disappears. -If aircraft has taken damage and feels unstable, set direct control OFF for more stability. -In case of single engine failure during hard maneuvering, immediately cut throttle as much as possible, set direct control OFF, and recover only once sufficient airspeed is built up. Otherwise you risk an extremely dangerous spin due to asymmetric engine thrust. But then again, most likely cause for single engine failure is damage from a gunshot, so you are probably at great risk anyway :D Sorry if too much info :):):)

Yeah using direct control is a must in Flanker dogfight, otherwise it easily loses to Eagle in one circle geometry! Also important for coming down "over the top" at slow speed!

F-15 has built in automatic trim, that's why the carefree handling. As for performance, I'll list winner for some attributes: Instantaneous turn rate: Su-27 Sustained turn rate(horizontal): Depends a lot on fuel weight Slow speed and high angle of attack flight and maneuvering: Su-27 Acceleration and climb: F-15 Top speed: F-15, especially at high altitude

Hmm, gotta put the Mirage through its paces... On a hunch I would say that snapshots are harder with the Mirage because of how the gunsight works compared to F-15. In Mirage you have to align the "snake" on the target's plane :) While in F-15 it's just pipper on target and shoot. Then there's the Eagle's raw engine power, better AoA authority (unless you turn off Mirage Fly By Wire hehe..) and the gun feels more powerful too. Why Mirage guns feel a bit underpowered I don't know, they just don't seem to have same punch as the Russian fighters' 30 mm guns...
-
Haha Sweeps that corkscrew was a little something new wasn't it :) although surely something like that must be documented somewhere, at least concerning older fighters perhaps...? It's just a little variation of the climb-up-and-wait-for-the-chaser-to-stall-first.

All true, energy fighting is what won me most rounds in the Top Gun tournament.. However like Bushmanni said, if there are modern dogfight missiles in play(AIM-9, R-73), energy fighting loses its value. All of the emphasis must be placed on angles and position instead. Extending or climbing at the expense of turn rate are mostly a big no-no, you will get a missile up the rear quickly :)
-
Hasn't been fixed so must be a feature not a bug :D:D:D But no I don't think it simulates anything..
-
It does land beautifully, doesn't it :) The landing dynamics are just really nice, nothing simplified there... About your climb problems.. if the thing doesn't want to climb then most likely you are flying too slow! When going for high altitude fly minimum Mach 0.9 all the way! If you're too slow, you have to dive for more speed and then retry the climb. Being too slow means high angle of attack which means high drag and also slow speed means less power from the engines. This is why you can get "stuck" if you try to climb at too low airspeed. Also make sure that gear, flaps and airbrake are all retracted ;)

It's possible to get 5 or even 6 Vikhrs downrange on separate targets during a single pass. Full flaps, 400 km/h attack speed, disengage laser manually immediately after target hit (rightshift-O)so you can fire the next shot immediately, use launch override(alt-W) to fire a little outside max range, also no need to align targeting circle perfectly when using launch override. With full flaps configuration, align target with the lowest edge of the targeting circle to get best Vikhr performance even for close range shots (minimum wobbling inflight - fewer misses!). When switching targets, don't look at the Shkval, just zoom in the hud, unlock target with lock button, move Shkval cue to next target by pointing your nose (rudder for lateral movement!) and then lock and fire! Just remember to keep Shkval in the zoomed in mode and it locks targets effortlessly, as long as there's daylight. Burning vehicle groups in no time! Just watch the return fire :smilewink:

Cant fire missiles unless landing gear down ??
Stuge replied to bartdude300's topic in DCS: Flaming Cliffs
Yep the instant release with wheels down is a pretty old bug. Not very useful in combat though :D -
If you want modern fighters, then get Flaming Cliffs 3. No contest. This way you get both F-15C and Su-27 and these jets are for me still the best this game has to offer (as long as the lack of clickable cockpit doesn't turn you off). This is also where the competitive multiplayer scene is at. If you must have clickable cockpit and deep systems modeling with lots to study, then I recommend A-10C as best and deepest, with second place going to Ka-50 Black Shark. If World War II or Korean Era is your thing there are planes to satisfy these desires. However keep in mind that single player mission content for these is extremely limited. WWII multiplayer scene is alive though. Then there's Mig-21 (fun but quite limited in its capabilities) and Mirage which is just in Beta(also limited capability compared to Flaming Cliffs 3 aircraft) but these come with clickable cockpits. Then there are the jet trainers if that lights your interest... And don't forget your free Su-25T, it's a very effective ground attack plane, and in many ways even better than the A-10C! Also it's quite fast for a bus with flat tires in mud! Pick your plane and start flying and studying! Welcome to DCS!

Yeah I have have cases where the attacker is hit or destroyed but his SARH still manages to hit me. There may be a few seconds' delay before the missile stops tracking, and even once it stops tracking the missile will fly the last calculated intercept course and may still hit!

F-15C RWR detects only +/-45 degrees in the vertical, the cones higher and lower than this (projecting up and down) are blind zones. These zones tilt as your aircraft tilts. Thus, if you bank 90 degrees and start turning away from a threat, it will drop at some point, even if you are still being tracked. To counter this, you can momentarily roll back wings level (for a co-altitude threat) to check if you are still being locked.
-
F-86 cannot just disengage at will, because its engines lack the kick of the mig. It needs a dive to the speeds where the mig's high-speed problems come to life...
-
Of course I meant that on average Mig-15 is superior. The main reason is the higher thrust which means better acceleration, turns, climbs. Good high speed performance of Sabre means it can run away, especially in a dive. But that is a defensive advantage only if you consider 1v1. The radar gunsight is nice, but not useful if the target is evasive. It's hard to put a nice long burst on a jinking target, and with these Sabres and Mig15s the chance of overshoot while pursuing and gunning is extremely high. And this is where the powerful guns of Mig-15 shine: you only need that one short perfect burst from point blank range, and if you can do that reliably, it will do the job, even if you overshoot in the process. You don't have to drill through the target like with the .50 cals! For me the only significant disadvantage of the Mig-15 is poor visibility from cockpit. All those bars are really in the way!
-
If you use wheel brake after touchdown it shouldn't pitch up. And like others have said, maybe your airspeed is too low during touchdown? That results in a very nose-up attitude.
-
Speaking of mods... someone should make a nuclear warheads for BVR missiles mod. Proximity fuse distance could be quite liberal, too. :D

Poka bistro letish, trudno popadat. Esli kto to na hvoste, drug teba sposet, povaratshivat silno vsegda risk, osobenno na Su-27 kotorii povaratshivaetsa horosho na malih skorostah, i tak v nevo otshen legko popast pri etoi maloi skorosti :) No esli mozhno ispolzovat raketi blizhnevo boja, to togda Su-27 gorazdo silnee tshem F-15. Sam protiv seba.. dumaju zaviset ot tovo kakoi den u menja :D -
