  1. Hmmm, I do find it a little hard to believe that there are 125 coders working on DCS. I’ve worked with studios ranging from 50 to 500, so would think we’d see more progress than of late based on the output of the folks I worked with. It seems more likely that this number includes all the module teams. Or perhaps ED has been expanding rapidly recently so they can deliver on the large workload their roadmap is aiming for? Or maybe I’m totally wrong and DCS is a far, far more complex piece of software than even AAA games. I hope it’s the rapid expansion reason ;)
  2. I’ve got bad news for you mate. Even if Vulkan is released it is not going to cure the virtual reality frame rate problem. I think we can expect around 10 to 20% performance increase with DCS utilising more than one core. To get a dramatic performance increase, the entire engine would need to be written from the ground up. That sure as hell that ain’t gonna happen. You’re going to have to invest in new hardware, such as the GeForce RTX 3080 TI to improve the VR experience. And even then I don’t think that GPU will be fast enough for a perfect VR experience, we are looking at waiting for another 4 to 5 years before that happens. My suggestion to you is to buy the fastest PC you can, and then put your VR headset to the side. DCS runs and looks beautiful in standard 2D. So enjoy that way of playing until VR becomes perfectly playable in 2024! By the way, flight simulators have always been by far the most demanding games to run on the PC. The complexity, scope and the sheer size means that they will hurt your PC more than any other genre of game. Expecting these demanding games to be able to run smoothly In VR is simply not realistic. You need to taper your expectations, be patient and wait for the hardware fast enough for VR to arrive in a few years time. After spending 150 hours trying to get the VR experience to work well on my monster PC, I’ve realised that I’m going to have to stick to 2D for the next few years. And now that I’ve stopped chasing the dream of a good VR experience I’m loving this amazing game.
  3. I think I'm familiar with the issue that you speak about. Can you confirm that the WMR virtual portal also blurs as you turn your head? If so, I solved this by completely uninstalling the Mixed Reality portal software, SteamVR and WMR for . Then I unplugged both the USB and DP cables of the Reverb, rebooted, and did a fresh install. Interestingly this problem seemed to disappear, though I'm not sure whether it was updating to Win10 1903, or the latest versions of Mixed Reality Portal, SteamVR or WMR for Steam. *Mark actually, I think your problem may indeed be related to your steamvr SS setting. 180% is way too high.
  4. Provided the camera records at a higher framerate than 45fps, it won’t introduce new artefacts. From memory the recent phone cameras record at 60fps. This is how monitor testers check for motion blur on displays. The pros at rtings.com have some great examples, where they go into detail about how they do all of their testing. Best guys in the biz if you ask me!
  5. Let’s not forget objects only rendering in one eye not the other, strange lighting bugs at night time, and some other issues. DCS could use a bit of tweaking to iron out these problems, but in the meantime I’m adoring 2d.
  6. Sorry, I meant higher quality and resolution of the video recording. Apologies if I wasn’t clear, but I thought my reference to capturing at a higher framerate indicated I was talking about video.
  7. I wouldn't say that having an accurate carrier landing experience is asking for too much. In fact, it should be a fundamental part of the F-14 experience. I absolutely adore the Tomcat module, but I too was disappointed when I nailed my first landing from a stupidly high AoA. I should have collapsed my landing gear, or had a bouncing hook, but to my surprise I pulled up perfectly. It would be great if HB could make this core experience of naval aviation a priority. I'd say it's even more important than making Jester handling the LANTIRN pod, as carrier landing really is one of the most unique yet common operations of flying the Tomcat.
  8. Hey legearra, how do I use the Jester command wheel to command him to switch to pulse? Also, PAL only works at around 10nm, correct? I need to engage these suckers much further out, so I have time to deal with their fighter cover.
  9. By the way, here's an image of Tacview showing that the choppers are directly in front of me. I wish someone would tell Jester that! https://i.imgur.com/vEBnjzw.png
  10. Hey folks I'm having issues with the first mission on the Operation Persian Gauntlet F-14 campaign. I take off from the carrier, head to waypoint one, and then can't detect any of the bloody choppers directly in front of my Cat. After watching the Tacview track, I know exactly where these choppers are. I know their height. AWACS also backs this up. So I know exactly what range and height to scan for, which I adjust the closer I get to where I know they're going to be. But I simply cannot detect them at all. I've run the mission several times after looking at the Tacview track, and the helicopters refuse to be detected. My wingman is calling out regular contacts at the same time, which are all invisible to me. Other than the radar scan altitude, I've left Jester's radar settings at default, which I'm guessing is where I've gone wrong. Or does Iran have special Stealth choppers?
  11. You guys are absolute bloody legends! Thank you so, so much for doing this, and taking the time to help me get to the bottom of this issue. It proves I'm not crazy! ;) Unfortunately screen shots won't show these problems, as it needs to capture in video to see this. I’m not sure if NVIDIA’s built-in video capture program will work for this, as it may rebuild the video one frame at a time. I’m not certain on this though. Even though YouTube compresses the video, and in the process tries to smooth out judder, I can still see the stuttering in the F-14 take-off mission. If you're not sure what I mean when it comes to judder (also called stuttering), this explanation is a good one. Even though it is talking about 24fps playback on a 60Hz display, the end result is exactly the same. Ghosting is very different, as this displays a weird shadow/ghost of fast moving objects that extend behind the object. You can see this effect clearly if you run the F-14 instant action dogfighting mission. Look at the Flanker as it passes to your right after the merge, and you'll see it looks bloody horrible. If you guys could capture the F-14 instant action take-off mission again but in much higher quality and framerate, and this time look out the left side of your canopy as you’re turning left over the town at the left of the runway, you should see the problem. Looking straight ahead is quite smooth when it comes to ghosting/judder, as there aren’t many objects in the scene moving at high speed. But as soon as you look out the side of your canopy or start manoeuvring quickly, the ghosting shows up. Alas, this scenario is commonplace for fighter pilots. If we were flying boring airliners, we’d probably never notice, as you’d be constantly looking forward, and the speed isn’t high. This could be why ground-pounders don’t notice the issue quite as much. I’ll pop up a video today of my experience, so we can do a direct comparison. Oh, and thank you for the offer of assistance, but as mentioned I’ve tried every thing known of to man, and then some. And triple thank you for helping me out. I'm sure many people will be helped by this information.
  12. Hey GunnarsDriver, I was asking about the new Pimax's performance regarding asynch reprojection. However, I would like to ask you for a favour. I keep hearing that 45fps looks great on the Reverb, with no ghosting or stuttering, but I sure did notice those two, even with the frame rate locked at 45fps (often going up to 60 in quiet areas). I know that my PC is perfectly configured in every other game, as the 5GHz 9700K, 2080 Ti, 32GB DDR4 3866, M.2 2TB Evo, etc, all score extremely well in game and synthetic benchmarks. Yet I've spent over 150 hours trying to find an acceptable performance level in DCS, and have given up in frustration. From everything I've read on the technology - and I've read a shitload - Asynchronous Reprojection must come with ghosting and stuttering. The HMD API has to "fake" every second frame, so these side-effects are present. If they weren't, every game and GPU on the market would be doubling framerate through a simple software hack. But I keep hearing these claims about smooth performance, and you seem dead set on this point. Can I ask you a favour? Can you fire up the F-14, do the Instant Action take-off, and film the view as you turn left over the small town as you take off? You can do it pretty easily with a phone camera. If you could also bring up the fps counter with ctrl+pause, I can see exactly what fps you're getting. If there is ghosting or stuttering, it should show up clearly on the phone's video recording. I know it's a big ask, but I'd really like to see this smooth gameplay that so many Reverb owners are talking about. After blowing AU$1200 on the Reverb, and the fastest possible PC on the market to power it, I'm a bit disappointed in the DCS VR experience. I'd owe you big time if you could spare 5 minutes to run this test for me. Anybody else with a Reverb who claims smooth, stutter-free gameplay can run this too. I'd be happy to do the same thing on my system, so you can see what my Reverb does.
  13. Very good point, though I wish the response from Wags was a little more optimistic and detailed. I'll hold off on buying the carrier until Tomcat support is confirmed.
  14. Hey guys I'd like to start installing some mods, but am unsure of the best way to do so - should I use the method stickied at the top of the forum, or use JGSME? If the latter is best, I think I read somewhere that this has some compatibility issues? Also, exactly which folders should I back up before doing any mods so that I can restore my game perfectly if things screw up (I'm using a Steam version of the game).
  15. Wow what an awesome job you have! I’d love to have a chat to you about what you did and the equipment you use. I still do a little freelance writing about technology and I think we could probably come up with a good story here.
  16. I don't understand how ED and Heatblur haven't already worked together to make this happen. Is it because ED sees the free Heatblur carrier as being a threat to their sales? I hope not, because if ED use these strategies I can see many module developers breaking away from DCS. There's a rather large new simulation on the way, and if these talented modders can introduce combat systems to it, ED is going to face an incredibly challenging road ahead.
  17. Can you please describe the asynchronous reprojection perdoance? Ie how smooth did it look compared to the stutter-fest of the Reverb, as well as the average frame rate you saw?
  18. Unless you have a 4080 Ti from the year 2024, there's no way in hell you can run a Reverb at 200% and not murder performance.
  19. I'd be more than happy to pay for the 8KX but I really can't see it running smoothly. The Reverb is bogged down to 45fps with async reproj on a 2080 Ti, which I find unacceptable due to the ghosting and stuttering. Can I ask if the 8KX has somehow solved this problem?
  20. I'm confident that it won't impact performance or image quality at all. That's not how the low latency Tech works.
  21. Hmmm, I think some of that may be placebo or you've inadvertently changed other settings. USB either works or it doesn't as it's a digital signal. The NVIDIA ultra setting is simply lowering the frame buffer, which again shouldn't impact smoothness (it made zero difference on my 2080 Ti). Not sure how running in full screen could make any difference either, as your GPU doesn't need to do extra work to pass through a ln image it's already rendered. Still, I might give this last suggestion a try, as who knows if there's some kind of bug in DCS.
  22. Start the game in 2d and bind a key to centre VR view. Fire up VR and hit that key. Mine is bound to ctrl +shft +space.
  23. My PC audio system is quite decent, comprised of a Sennheiser GSX1200 external USB headphone amplifier, paired with the fantastic BeyerDynamic MMX300 headphones. Unfortunately nearly all of the sound effects in DCS crackle, especially voice comms. Note that this doesn't happen in any other game (I've played around 40 PC games through this audio setup), and also occurs at low volume, so it's not caused by me cranking the sound. I've searched for a fix but can't find one. Any ideas?
  24. I bought a 7-port powered USB PCIe card based on the recommendations I read in this forum. It performed worse than my motherboard's integrated USB ports. I have frequent drop outs of the HMD, which also led to other peripherals connected to the card losing connection. Note that this card is the best USB 3.0 add-on card available in Australia. So, getting another peripheral shouldn't be necessary unless you don't have a spare port.
  25. Hey folks, any fix for this? I can't play the Persian campaign any more due to this bug.
