DOGS of WAR is back up right now. Itsy Bitsy is running. Open for business!!
-
Way ta go, VUAF and VEAO. I'm not good enough to race, but I highly encourage those who are thinking about this contest to go for it. Should be filmed, twitched..... commented on TS3? An online event promoting those who host this, DCS and of course, VEAO. I say GO FOR IT. There's time to grow this thing and make it a "real" event for VR pilots, and one heck of a show for enthusiasts! I'd sit back and watch on my big screen if I can get the hook-up to work! With a streaming link, people wouldn't who are spectating wouldn't have to be running DCS, and the server (password only - given to participants) would have an easier time of it.

From a server standpoint, yes, this kills the US side but, even with some other server, ED or otherwise, it won't be the DOGS of WAR server, with its fantastic missions and all the thought and care that went into it. Drainpipe Battle in the Bay River Raiders Mudskipper Refuge Loose Lips Care to name more? EACH mission was its own little game. You couldn't always tell when 4 AI would bounce your butt from "The Ridge" all the way back to base.... or when a safe area convinces you it isn't. I miss the place. Even at a 310 ping from my crazy location, I had mas fun there.

Well, SOMEone has to be first! Even on a stripped-down mission server.... I seemed to find players on DoW regularly, and I don't think attendance is the driving factor for the decision, from conversation. When you speak of "community", I get that you are referencing a part of it - the flight and fight kind? Air starts? Like an arcade?? I'm a great fan of the rotating missions with moderate to complex objectives. DoW wasn't an "AirQuake" server, though you could find that with the AI at times. Mission-based. Skills-focussed. If it's just "get in the air and shoot at stuff", then it isn't very interesting. I prefer not knowing when someone will pounce. Keeps me on my toes. Don't need a map telling me where my guys or the other guys are... finding them is part of my job up there, right? For my crew, TS3 and communications help get people back together. Finding the other guys? CAP. If it's just a simple brawl, we'll never get into navigation, wing tanks, center tanks, ordnance, altitude management, pitot and gun heat, etc.... I'm sorry, but I think the complexity is what separates it from jokes like WarThunder. But, since you asked, and if I had to compromise from my end of the debate, here are my choices.... So, what are your preferences when it is unlikely that more than 8 people will be on a map? Startup options: always cold start / options for engine running starts / options for air starts No air starts. People really should know that getting it up and running is part of flying. Map Settings: no aircraft icons / only your aircraft / fog of war enabled / all aircraft visible Only your aircraft. This helps people see where they are individually. From there, they can tell their buds where they are and have some semblance of reality-based hook-up. All Visible? Screw it. Might as well throw darts. visibility aids: no aids / f5 view / icons No aids. Maybe F2 to help with runway layout. Required time to find combat: 1 minute / 5 minutes / 10 minutes / 15 minutes / no guarantee of combat None of the above. Might want to change this question to "Distance to Bull's Eye. Time is just a distance control in the environment you are creating. Even if someone is 2 minute's flying time away from the play pen, if they go the wrong way, it could be 20 minutes. Set a distance that gives them enough time to pick and achieve an altitude (for energy management), ready their gun sights and find the enemy. Aw heck, I guess that would be about 5 minutes anyway, so, yeah, 5. Objectives: none, just air combat / simple objectives that require ground attack / complicated objectives that require some kind of logical sequence to accomplish A mixture. If it's just ONE mission on the server, simple objectives would be my vote, but it sounds like you're looking for the lowest common denominator which would be air-only. My perfect choice would be a mix of moderate to complicated. I need to think, not just play an arcade game. Weather: good flying weather / mild crosswinds or clouds / inclement weather RANDOM. If its air starts and such, weather won't play much of a factor except to create some interesting effects. AI aircraft: no AI, ever! / a few AI aircraft / many AI aircraft User dependent. If there are one or two humans online, AI should spawn to make it interesting. Balance it out, unless the objective demands a level of difficulty for one side. I personally don't have a problem with 5 or 6 AI buggers up there if I have 3 or 4 good AI helping out. I'll fly that solo all day. TS availability: not interested / optional / must have Optional, with protest. I would like to see it mandatory, but some people can't /won't do it. If the goal is for solo people to fly en-mass and get their rocks off with the trigger, why bother with TS. But for a "community", it should be strongly encouraged almost to the point of Thou SHALT. I think everyone knows how to plug in a mic, and if they can download DCS and install /activate properly, they certainly can install something as simple as TS3. Again, if you're going for lowest common denominator to attract 8 people or so, it might work. But it wouldn't be for me... I'll stick with the DoW guys even if it means fewer sessions, because it interests the inner-pilot I have. "Drainpipe", "Refuge", "Mud Skipper", "River Raiders", "Loose Lips", "Battle in the Bay".... these are classic missions, in my book. If I can't get to them often enough on their event schedule, I may ask permission to have the files and strongly consider setting up my own server. Might even get into mission writing myself. But, I think we are coming at this from two separate directions. And that's okay, too. But to suggest that DoW has altered its role because of low attendance .... mmmmmm, naaaa. That ain't the whole story, and I can't elaborate.

Withdrawal..... sucks worse than keyboard rudders.... There are others servers, now and then, but none as well done. Whoever is responsible for forcing this decision needs to be flogged and turned into a windsock.

Just today I was thinking about a "Mighty Eighth" mission. Escorting 12 bombers at 32K. Long range - wing tanks required. Fighting at altitude. :noexpression:

Logitech G-13 Joystick Usage
HeadHunter52 replied to HeadHunter52's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Found it. Logitech gaming software utility has an option for the joystick called "Assign Joystick." Once this change is made, DCS sees the analog input. After assigning the axis for rudder to this device in DCS Options, I'm good to go! Works well. -
At the moment, I am able to use the G-13's joystick, but only as a keystroke input device. I would love to make use of the analog design of the stick to serve as a cheap rudder input device. Searching various forums, I've seen older posts about how this isn't possible. Has anyone found a way to get DCS to see the G-13 joystick input as an analog device?

Matt will give us a DCS World 2 Live Stream
HeadHunter52 replied to uboats's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
I look at it this way. The stream, which I could not view, (so those of you that DID see it, quit yer bitching), was A GIFT. It was announced and conducted under specific parameters and placed him under zero obligation to do anything more. Who has any right to demand anything beyond that point, especially since it was FREE? It's like people that show up to a yard-free and trash what's there for free because they aren't happy with the quality. Freaking A. Maybe if you PAID for the show, but... you DIDN'T. -
Looking better and better.

POLL: When is a good date for a WWII German vs. P51D event?
HeadHunter52 replied to dooom's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
Saturday AM Pacific works for me, and the ping rates, which are normally over 300, drop to 160ish. -
I'm aware for that, BUT, I do like its handiness at grinding up ground targets. I like hitting things on the grounds and its capabilities are well known. Plus, my buddy's dad's pals were full of stories about them. I want to see how I do with it. Survivability will make it much more fun than the agile-but-fragile girl we play with now.
-
When will it be available?
-
As much as that sucks, at least the lead aircraft is a Spit, and not some non-hacker. I'll take that as a consolation prize and hunt Huns till that fat lady comes along. I really like ground attack..........

I installed the big package by Diveplane, and took the 'Stang for a test flight. Initially, the engine sounded robust. Lots of harmonics, low freq sounds and an impressive flyby sound. But over time, I got the sense that there is a bit of something like a jet engine, and that there were quite a few layers of sounds that didn't "fit" well. Almost as if the complexity of the sound was masking something. The prop slapping the air is beautiful at start-up, but beyond that, and especially on the take off, I got a bad aftertaste. The guns? Ummmm, no. Sound like someone beating on a loose drum head, in another room. I recognize it from a YouTube video of a pilot in a DSC Mustang. I remember thinking then, "This thing is just plain weird." Now I know where it came from. I used JSGME to put instal it, and to remove it. Had hopes for it based on a DoW flyer's review. Back to the default for me. Anyone know of any other Mustang packages???

Metal makes everything better... or does it?
HeadHunter52 replied to Mirknir's topic in Screenshots and Videos
Rock on, Mir!! There should be a metal smilie for this... -
That group rocks. I love flying with them. Skilled, creative, professional and courteous. D0o0m even apologized once for shooting me down. Lol!

Giant Explosion After Saudi Arabian Airstrike
HeadHunter52 replied to 104th_Maverick's topic in Military and Aviation
Continual blow and burn, like old battleship magazine explosions, without the water dousing. Impressive. -
THIS

I have a few searches I run looking for info. When I see something in the thread, I generally hope it is some sort of announcement. Nope. Just more questions. I've pulled back my visits because of all the complaints.

Ummm, bad-ass?
-
BRAVO!!

Last night on Loose Lips, we worked over the cruiser. Saw a bit of flame, some hits. None of the other visual anomalies were present. The only wierd thing was all three of us getting blown to bits at the same time. Someone suggested an AAA artifact that will sometimes hammer everyone at the same time on the first burst. Made for a cool video, though. :D

P51 Engine blows immediately after taking off
HeadHunter52 replied to DaneRieger's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
I haven't had a bang or a seize in quite some time. Last night i had an engine shutdown gradually on take off. As I was applying power quickly yet smoothly, power dropped off and then it died all together. I'm sure I didn't let it warm enough. My routine is to: Start engine Verify take off settings Taxi to runway when oil is above 35 deg, at about 1200-1400 rpm surges as needed to keep rolling Once I'm lined-up and ready to roll, I check to see that temps are not much above 40, if above 40 at all. I apply power initially to 30". It drops a tad once it reaches that. Then I move throttle toward full at an even rate, with the first inch or so being slower than the remainder of the travel. It gets me airborne quickly if I don't trip the pony with bad inputs.... and I don't ever junk an engine. Last night was me trying to catch up with the 4 GOOD pilots that left ahead of me. As it was, rushing things left me WAAAAaaayyyyyyy behind... :( -
Hubert, specifically, in what LUAs were you making adjustments? aircraft_guns.lua?
