Please improve mission design & (de-)briefing
randomTOTEN replied to Michi.G85's topic in General Bugs
Hello, Unfortunately, I can only partially understand your frustration. You see, I don't own the F-14. So I can't make any observations on the "Missile City" mission. But I can make some observations on the general topic of Mission Briefings and the Mission Planner. My perspective is as an experienced DCS User (and recently small time mission creator). I can say over the years that this is a common theme. People get very frustrated with this simulator, and declare it broken. A lot of times it is. A lot of times it isn't, but the process is interesting yet repetitive. Lets skip to your analysis of the Georgian Oil War Campaign (because I own the A-10C). Okay. I have never flown this campaign before, and never seen this mission before. I'm going to stop my reply here. It took me all of about 6 minutes reading the briefing and looking at the planner to know the answers to all your questions. But remember, I'm an experienced DCS user. Would you like me to explain this very easy mission to you? To help you (and others reading) to perhaps learn the logic of the simulator, and how to make use of the tools which are available? Or are you interested in telling us how this is a bad mission brief and it's impossible to figure out what the player is supposed to do. I can just silently lurk the remainder of this thread if that's the goal. -
Unable to switch off this very annoying alarm sound
randomTOTEN replied to AMVI_Grape's topic in Su-25T (Free with DCS World)
My guess is that's a sound file playing within the mission. Try a different mission and see if it repeats. -
we need a way to change the freq's of Russian radios in game
randomTOTEN replied to evanf117's topic in DCS Core Wish List
the multiplayer admin apparently doesn't care about that. setting this up is the mission designer's job. -
You can probably still get away with it today. My understanding is that Russia still supports metric units below the Transition Level, and I just looked up Georgia (Tbilisi AIP) and while I can't find the exact regulation on it, I see plenty of references to metric units; including visibility, distances, cruising altitudes, airspeeds, etc... I bet they still support it. ...also it makes life a lot easier when DCS Russia style ATC tells you to climb 300(m) at QFE XXX.X

That tells me you had a fuel leak. I like the APU idea too. And I have actually experienced a fuel leak in the Hokum so I know that's modeled.

Reading this thread, OP you seem to greatly over-complicate the task of lining up with the ship. I agree with Pieterras and Swiftin9s. You guys don't seem to like the answer, "just eyeball it." "Do pilot $#!T" It's a shame the Youtube user A.E.W. deleted his excellent (and lengthy) CASE 1 series. He continuously beat the drum of "work the numbers." That means to know your targets, and to adjust flight parameters to meet them. Don't just set some perfect value X and let everything fall apart. Flying a virtual jet is an active process. The carrier deck is marked to resemble a runway. It doesn't take 2 pages of discussion to know how to maintain a centerline. You're looking at the FPV for help. You need to be looking at the ship. A.K.A. "Just eyeball it." They literally put the paint down for your eyeballs. Case 1 as a V-I-S-U-A-L procedure.... Good luck!

DCS: F-5E is the hardest fast jet to fly in bad IMC weather
randomTOTEN replied to DmitriKozlowsky's topic in DCS: F-5E
True, but the reality is the overwhelming majority don't even know what a TACAN approach is, don't know the concept of an MDA, and think it's impossible to fly an F-5 in the clouds. They're not making a choice to disregard minimums and try their luck. They set 0/0 and try to crash into the AB, when that doesn't work they proclaim the airplane day only. Intersting remark about TERPS. It looks like you're right about the 250ft. My assumption was 300-1, and the last nonprec I was working with was KLSV and 400-1 3/8 so that's what I used for a comparison. -

randomTOTEN replied to DmitriKozlowsky's topic in DCS: F-5E
You don't need to. Non-Precision mins are pretty close anyways, and both can be much lower than the weather minimum for many combat tasks. We're talking 400ft vs 200ft, there's no need to bust mins. I don't get the combat community's obsession with 0/0 landings. Everybody was all mad at the Hornet because it didn't have ICLS when it first came out, but it had TACAN. On the carrier the TACAN takes you down to 360ft, vs the ICLS 260ft. Everybody was all up in arms about that for months.... ...there's no need to try and take a TACAN approach to 200ft. -

Interesting to see the goal post move from, to, hhhhmmmmm Agree, the question presented: Is the F-5 a "in bad IMC weather" machine. My assertion is, Yes it is. Anyways, ------------------------------------------------------- Here you go guys, @DmitriKozlowsky, @Raviar Enjoy. DmitriKozlowsky F5 IFR.miz -

Uhh.... I specifically mentioned "straight and level," you absolutely have a reference for the fast erect. Well considering the gyro procession isn't realistic, I'm not terribly bothered by the solution being equally fantasy... -

The gyro issue isn't even that bad in my experience. Just FAST ERECT when you're straight and level. -
Got up to M2.0 and 70,000ft+ last night on internal fuel only. Pretty nice actually, I usually tank a drop tank and now realize that's quite a bit of drag. Are your speed brakes deployed?

I watched the entire investigation hearing on this accident. Retreating blade stall was never mentioned. He was attempting to climb to VFR on top when he lost control, not a scenario where high speed would result in RBS. I'm sorry but this is wrong, and the board disagrees with you. -

randomTOTEN replied to DmitriKozlowsky's topic in DCS: F-5E
Nah, this isn't true. It's somewhat beyond DCS but there are other qualities an aircraft has to have to be a "fine IFR type." Many aircraft are actually quite bad "IFR types." You described equipment and procedures that are ineffective and mostly unacceptable for IFR. No, some of the best "IFR types" are quite fast. The B747-400 is incredibly fast compared to your examples, and is a fantastic "IFR type." Not really. That's why you're failing at it. Not relevant to IFR. Useful equipment for sure, but you're having problems because you're missing the point. Not needed, but I know a lot of people like it. --- It's an interesting accident. People unfamiliar generally don't understand how it happened. I can often see people make the same fatal mistakes in DCS. In his situation, I think this would have been even more of a death sentence. -

I think it's just fine as an IFR machine. If you're relying on the FCR you're doing it wrong. EDIT: Nellis AFB will let our F-5E land in as low as 2.3km visibility. -
Newbie, can't understand the HSI
randomTOTEN replied to darklanov's topic in DCS World Tutorial & Help Requests
Highly recommend the navigation mission. If you have a problem with the HSI where nothing seems to be working, turn the TACAN radio OFF and back ON again. It's a minor DCS thing that sometimes trips people up. -

Welcome! I think you made an excellent choice starting with the F-5. What mission was this? Where can I find it? Check out this cool video. The T-38 Talon is a two seat training version of your F-5. In this example you will see quite a lot of equipment that isn't in our export sale Light Fighter, but the ADI/HSI are the same, and it shows you proper techniques (and it's RL footage, how cool is that?). Also, you can experiment with any number of web based VOR trainers. A VOR is a civilian substitution for military navigation equipment. You should consider them mostly identical from the cockpit (don't grill me too much on that guys). http://www.luizmonteiro.com/learning_hsi_sim.aspx ....imagine that... a simulator for a simulator. -
Load a takeoff instant action mission (i.e. it starts you on the runway ready for takeoff), go to the outside view and move all controls fully in every direction. Do they all move in reaction to your stick? Fully and in the correct way?

Can you please upload a short track so we can try to give you pointers? I ask for 2 tracks if you please. 1. You trying to hover with Pitch, Roll, and Heading autopilots engaged. 2. You trying to hover with no autopilot mode engaged.
