Very cool! There training qualifications are exactly what is needed in DCS. I love the idea of having a career in DCS where you start as a cadet like this. And now we have the trainers to start with even before that too :)

Most releases have an announcement about a week or two before release, because they have to give their files to Eagle Dynamics for testing and for building the installer. So even they do make an announcement it most likely won't be release for a week or more after the announcement.

Using an EDTracker as a Cyclic
TomOnSteam replied to Inrideo's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Interestng project. It really opens up the possibility of cheap home made hardware that is very accurate! -
Just make sure you select the correct SPI before pressing the pickle button. Otherwise you might end up mowing those roses again.

If you aren't in too much of a hurry, then wait till May-July as Nvidia is supposed to release new video cards. So for the price of a GTX 970, in a few months you will be able to buy a card that is twice as fast for the same money :)

I purchased this from Sahaj sometime during 2014. Works beautifully and makes the Warthog really come to life. It is a handmade steel tube, it is as solid as it sounds and looks. There is also the cable to connect your joystick which sits inside the tube. I'm looking at making a floor mounted warthog mod, so I'd like to find a new home for this little beauty :) I'm asking $65 AUD, with free postage in Australia. Happy to post overseas, PM your address details and I'll quote you a shipping cost. Thanks!

Thanks for the update Wags! I think it says a lot about how good and viable either VR headset is if Mr. Wags is using them for play times :)

Wind simulation Hardware Advice needed
TomOnSteam replied to hannibal's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
You should be able to download an arduino simulator/emulator somewhere. Some are even free. I'd break it down in these steps: Step 1: Start by making a small program that can read the aircraft airspeed out of the DCS-BIOS (there is a section somewhere here on the forums for DCS-BIOS) and then display it through your arduino simulator/emulator. This can be done most likely for free, and is also the critical portion. Step 2: If you can get that far, then you can get the hardware you need and make a completely unrelated program that just changes the speed of the fan manually via the ardiuno. Step 3: Obviously then last step would be to make a function method that converts the dcs bios airspeed data to whatever data is required by the spinning fan. Good luck and I want to see screenshots :) -
That is crazy how the fuel spills out everywhere that fast.

You certainly don't need an expensive set up to enjoy yourself that's for sure. But the flying smoothness between the komodosim video and ps3 controller is like night and day. It really highlights how much precision you need to fly a helicopter accurately and safely (and how good DCS flight model is!). I'm not being rude, but if I got into a helicopter that fly the way the PS3 controller did, I would be asking to get out very quickly :) (I don't fly any better with a warthog ;) ) Of course if you're having fun, a gamepad certainly lets you get the job done, and you can't argue about the price! :) There is also a lot to be said for immersion when you have realistic controls in your hands and feet, and when you've got a VR helmet on. Of course the cost is big, you need money, a loving wife and an extra room and maybe even extra PC! There is also something nice about the convenience of just picking up a gamepad and flying.

I think that would make you very nauseas very quickly. You might be able to get used to it though. I think a better solution would be to use the mirrors in the cockpit :)

VKB T-Rudder Pedals - Review
TomOnSteam replied to rrohde's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Considering getting a set of these. What I really want out of set of pedals are ones that are so accurate that I don't need to use a curve on the axis. Is this possible on the VBKs? I currently have CH Pro pedals, and they need at least a curve of 20 maybe even 40 to get smooth response out of them. -
Absolutely, but I mean for day 1, this will work perfectly. Until someone brings out some kind of gloves or whatever :)
-
well that's the fishing for the keyboard and mouse problem solved. I mean you could even use that in a real simpit to flip the switches.

I actually find that the youtube videos of the DK2 look considerably better compared to using the DK2 itself. On youtube you don't have the screen door effect / fly screen effect at all. It looks a lot cleaner than in person. What you don't get though is the sense of immersion of course :)

Wow that looks fun :) Although his first experience with DCS was about as smooth as mine haha. It's not easy to begin with that's for sure! It's a shame he has such little experience with DCS as what we really need is someone that can tell us whether the gauges and HUD is readable, and whether you can see planes and targets etc.

WOAH! That picture in picture mode is very cool. Now I wonder if it's possible to get that picture in picture mode to appear inside the right MFCD in the A-10C :)

Given my own health, I've spent the last 3 years going full study sim mode. Not on a DCS module, but nutrition. And I know that many people in the flight sim community are middle aged or perhaps even approaching their golden years. And seeing the recent post that a popular community member has died made me decide I should share this information. I didn't want to post this in the RIP thread, as it would be disrespectful, and my intention is certainly not to use a tragic event to get attention. It's just that when I saw the cause of the death, and the young age it reminded me of how big of a deal nutrition plays in health. My intention of posting this is to help everyone live longer and healthier, both physically and mentally, as this will allow you to enjoy DCS for much MUCH longer. There was a recent talk with Dr. Michael Greger at the Google office that I hope you will all find enlightening. 7rNY7xKyGCQ Yes it goes for an hour, but I guarantee that if you take the time to watch it and apply a few principles to your life, you'll get at least a year back! :) There are other great sources too: The Engine #2 Diet by Rip Essylstyn Power Foods for the Mind by Dr. Neal Barnard The Starch Solution by Dr. John McDougall How Not To Die by Dr. Michael Greger The China Study T.Colin Campbell (There are the most recent ones, just about any book from the authors will do). Many of these books are also available in different languages if English isn't your preferred reading language. I know that many people will be quite skeptical, and that's fair enough, I was skeptical as well since there are so many fad diets coming out each year, with seemingly contradicting science research being released every week(The books and talks will explain why that is). But please trust me, I'm not selling anything, and neither are the authors. In fact many of them give their book profits straight to charity. They're also part of an organisation called the PCRM - Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. Yes the organisation that routinely sues the US Department of Agriculture for releasing misleading nutritional recommendations. Feel free to ask any questions, as I do consider myself a bit of a lounge chair expert on this topic :) All I want is for everyone to be informed in order to make the best choices for themselves and their family.

I guess we're all just waiting to hear which one will be better for DCS :) (AND THEN WE CAN BASH THE ONE THAT IS NOT AS GOOD! j/k) You are right though, when it comes to hardware at least these forums are very mature, with lots of helpful information.

With PC upgrades, I usually see a benchmarking chart, so I know what kind of performance to expect, and I buy the one that has the performance that I need. But no such reviews exist for the Vive or Rift yet. Even though I'm super excited about both VR helmets, I'm yet to see any reviews for DCS from either(I've tried the DK2 in DCS, and it's a good demonstration of what better technology could bring, but it's definitely not something I would use even for free apart from a bit of fun or to show it off, it's just not playable. The final version of the Rift or Vive might not be that much better, we just don't know yet). I'm just surprised that people aren't waiting for the reviews of the final version before forking out the money, since nobody really knows what the experience will be like, we're all just imagining what it might be like(and assuming it will be fine). It's not like the VR Helmets will run out of stock or go up in price. I guess what I'm saying is there doesn't seem to be a big incentive to pre-order something this expensive, which has a (very small) possibility of being completely unfit for purpose. I'm 90% sure the experience will be amazing. But seems like a lot of money to risk, when there really is no downside to waiting a week or two and read the reviews.

Try the keyboard on a different computer or laptop. If it doesn't work on a different machine, then I'd say the keyboard is broken. (or it's set to some strange mode, like a macro programming mode or something like that).
-
Is anyone expecting for the prices of either VR headset to go up after release? I'm just not understanding how people are pre-ordering something that they haven't tried. (especially for the price).

some amazing pictures there! And nice stories to match!
