Thanks for the advice. I replaced it with a 1200 w psu and checked the mb for those capacitors but while I didn't find any obiously blown ones, I did find 2 that seemed banged up. This is a refurbished mb and I'm not sure if this is cosmetic or would actually effect the computer. I opened up the old 850 psu and couldn't find any blown caps their either. So I'm wondering what happened. What caused that weird burning, spicy smell? Powered it up and tried DCS again. Works perfectly fine, but it does seem to take more time to load up a game than normal. Will check my SSD.

I'm just curious how you would evade missiles on missions where you are not given the countermeasures pod. Notching I get with Radar guided but not sure how you would fool a manpad heat seeker or one launched from a mig 21. And another thing, why do AI viggen seem to deploy flares when they don't have the countermeasure pod? That confused the hell out of me and made me thing that those triangle things beside the nozzle were flare dispensers.

So in an embarassingly stupid move, I tried to overclock my R9 290x and my fx9590 at the same time. And if you know what I'm about to report, good on you, you should probrably use me as a warning to everyone else. But just to be sure I'm not just imagining things. I may have burnt out my 850 watt bronze cert PSU. Thing is, I've never had a PSU break on me before, so I didn't know what to look for: but I did smell something burning and it gave off a really spicy smell. My computer is next to the kitchen and my roommate was cooking, so I naturally just thought he burned something on the stove. But when I realized he didn't burn anything, I realized I just might have killed my computer. Sure enough, starting up my computer 1/2 the time it locks up on the ASUS splash screen, and 1/4 of the time it doesn't even produce a video graphic at all... and in the 1/4 time I make it all the way into my desktop, the computer runs like a dog with an amputated leg. I sort of expected the computer not to work at all but it does power on, it just works like crap now. So just to be sure. I broke my PSU right? even though it turns my computer on, the fact that it smelled like burnt chili powder and won't get past POST half the time, signifies that I have to toss that PSU and make sure I didn't burn my components, right? I don't know what I should do to see if my components were damaged. I bought a new, better PSU but I'm not sure if there are other steps to take care of.

Anyone else firing 80 rockets from 1 km away at a tight group of targets in a convoy setting and only destroying 3 or four trucks? Don't know what I'm doing wrong. I fire a short burst to get my range and then rake the convoy with fire but only manage to get 3-4 on a good run and 0 on some. Is there a convergence range for the rockets?

That's great news about Vulkan, I just heard grapevine talk from the other forum members. What are your specs? I can't seem to get the performance you're getting. Is it possible I'm getting bottlenecked with the AMD FX-9590? I managed to overclock it to get it up to 5.33ghz but I'm getting more around 30-35 fps (and the trackIR 5 slashes the fps by about 10fps everytime I move my head around) Also, I bought a Formula V Asus motherboard for the AMD processor but it didn't come with the CD with all the drivers and stuff on it. I tried downloading it from ASUS website, but some of the drivers can't be unzipped for some reason.

May I ask what graphics settings you're using? Also, I thought that VULKAN was just a rumor?

1080 or 1440 resolution, I'm hoping to play VR eventually, given all the praise it's been getting, but currently not now. CPU is the fx-9590 at 4.7. Heard it can reach 5.0 oced. But I'd have to buy a 1000w psu to do that.

I was over clocking both. I stopped doing it but I guess that oc the cpu/vid card is sucking up too much power. But don't know how the calc came up with 1600 watts

Obviously, 2080TI out performs Vega 64, but I'm just wondering if that difference is worth the extra cash nessesary for a better experience with DCS. I brought the Vega 64 and it certainly kicks the crap out of my old card, which struggled to even play normal graphics at a consistent 30fps, but the casual framedrops and strain under object heavy missions gives me that itch for more power. I feel like I'm so close to having the best experience possible if I just shell out a bit more cash. So, sort of torn on the idea of returning the Vega 64 for a 2080TI, what is the community's thoughts on the performance of the 2080Ti in dcs? Worth the money or stick to the 64?

How does the vega 64 do in dcs?

ill let you know once i have a general grasp of how computers work. -
I experienced some weird graphical issues and thought my old 850watt psu wasn't cutting it. Not really good with numbers i went over to outervision power supply calculator and plugged in my components and got the outrageous number of 1600 watt psu. double checked and triple checked to make sure that all my components were correct and it gives me a high watt recommendation. fx9590 4.7ghz 32gb ddr3 ram 2 ssd 1 7500 sata disk drive asus 8gb rx vega 64 coolermaster masterliquid ml240l hotas warthog, pedals trackir and a video game controller for other games like 'hitman' and 'witcher 3' and it seems to add up to the reccomended psu of 1600... does that sound kosher? it doesnt sound kosher. I'm suprised my old 850watt didnt just explode if that was the case...

Got 32 GB (4x8gb) RAM running at DDR3 1800. Is that enough future-proofing to possibly run VR in the future? For the record, I have a 8gb radeon RX vega 64 from asus AMD FX-9590 8 core at 4.7 GHz and 860EVO 1TB SSD from samsung. Got win 7, so can't actually use a VR headset, but when I can get one, I'll get win 10 (crossing bridges as we get there) Just wondering if RAM speed made all that much of a difference. Thanks for your help.

The problem I'm dealing with when trying to make a "general, budget cockpit", (without 1 to 1 replication, cause I don't have that kind of money) is that I want a floor mounted joystick with a stick extension. But in order to do that, I need to find 2 things. A pilot's seat that doesn't cost $1000 and a curved joystick extension. The stick extensions I find are all straight, which makes the extension hit the crotch area of the chair when I pull back at full deflection... Any affordable alternatives that I could buy that anyone knows of?

Disintergrating during supersonic manuvers
WelshZeCorgi replied to WelshZeCorgi's topic in DCS: AJS37 Viggen
Welp, this is not the right subsection, can I get this moved to the viggen forum? -
I confused how you're supposed to handle the aircraft, because it's designed to fly very fast at very low altitudes, but if you need to make a hard evasive manuver, say in my case, to avoid hitting a tree that you thought you weren't going to run into, you immediately disintergrate and die. Is that a bug or are you supposed to be really gentle with her when she's flying supersonic?

Annoying problems with Flight/Wingman AI
WelshZeCorgi replied to WelshZeCorgi's topic in DCS Core Wish List
Well, I tried it twice, giving the order to attack ships once at Max range and once at mid range and they still will give the 'unable' reply. If putting AI versions of the RB04 solves the problem, then there is more to it than just slapping them on and ordering them to attack. -
The AI under your command are annoyingly restricted. This is very apparent in some modules than in others like with the AJS-37 because they are unable to use certain weapons, like the RB-04 and 15. Considering that these two weapons are essentially the bread and butter of the anti-ship role for the Viggen, to not have the AI able to follow the "engage ships" order is a bit annoying. They go from multi million weapon platforms to helpless ducklings that get shot out of the sky after dumping a hundred thousand dollars of munitions into the sea in order to evade missiles from ships they are incapable of intelligently firing on. The wish is that AI is worked on for each module to better fit their niche.

1: how do you delete any input? When I put the "9099" code into the Data computer, I sometimes mistake the 1 for a zero and it comes out "9199". But then there is no backspace. Do I just flip the selector forward or back or cycle the input/output switch to clear the input or is there a backspace I'm not seeing? 2: The Nav warning light on my right panel sometimes won't turn off after startup. Everything seems normal and nothing seems out of the ordinary, Nav is ok, waypoints are where they're supposed to be and doing what it's supposed to do. But that yellow warning text just stays there and never extinguish. I put in the cartridge, flip the selector to REF/LOLA input 9099 but for some reason, the Nav warning light will turn on and never turns off during the entire flight. 3. Bonus question, how do you get AIs in your flight to fire their RB-04s? I know the AI can't properly fire their RB-15s but does that carry over to the RB-04s? I'm doing the Hunt the Hunter (destroy a destroyer searching for a critically damaged submarine) and sometimes it shoots down my missiles but ordering my flight to attack ships gets a "unable" or "negative" response. Then they collectively dump a million dollars worth of munitions into the black sea in order to evade incoming missiles from the ship they refuse to fire on. Thanks for listening!

I'm having trouble using my stick extension because my pedals are to narrow and my seat is too high. Does anyone have any suggestions as to which seat/HOTAS+stick extension/rudder pedals combo that feels the most ergonomic?

Is there a book that I can use to learn the terminology and "pre-study" before my first flying lesson? I plan to use it alongside DCS to sort of get the basics down.

How long should stick be?
WelshZeCorgi replied to WelshZeCorgi's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
My only problem with the 36cm stick extension (3, 12cm from MFG) I have is that it hits my knees before full deflection and my knees are so close together because my rudder pedals are a bit narrow. I'm trying to figure out how to get it to work comfortably. -
Is a TM Warthog extension a good investment ?
WelshZeCorgi replied to jfri's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
do you guys anchor it/screw it/bolt the baseplate or just let it stand freely on the ground/mount on your seat? -
I got some stick extensions for the warthog HOTAS, but I'm having trouble determining how long the stick should be to get that realistic "feel", range of movement and amount of fine control. So I was wondering how long the stick of the A10C was, From where the hand position is to the floor. Anyone know?
