Jet Seats and other Force Feedback options
Aries144 replied to ChuckJäger's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I have both a Jetseat and a Frankenstein FFB stick using a CH Fighterstick grip modified to have most of the features of the Warthog. The Jetseat I have adds a lot of "feel" to flying. It's outstanding when used with a VR headset. It's practically essential for flying helicopters and the Mig-21, where you can feel the early signs of an oncoming stall more easily than without. Some things a FFB stick gives you, like stall onset buffet, are also done by the Jetseat. The unique things that a FFB stick gives you are specific to each aircraft. The F-5's trim actually moves the stick around. Same for the Russian jets, WW2 planes, and F-14. It's very useful when using force trim in helicopters, as you simply hold the stick where ever you want it, press "trim" and that point becomes the new center position the "springs" return the stick to. There are generally a lot of cool details as well, like being able to feel the 'recommended roll rate' stops in the x axis on the F-5. You feel a stop in the x axis and push through it to get maximum roll rate. On the F-14 on the deck with engines at idle the stick is sort of limp as the hydraulics aren't at full pressure. When you increase thrust, the stick stiffens. And no, I can't find a better explanation than that. :megalol: If you're willing to invest some time in DIY, several users have made their own force feedback Frankenstein joysticks, myself included. I used an MS Force Feedback 2 and put a CH Fighterstick grip on it. I then modded the grip to have a two-stage trigger and CMS press function and spliced in a Leo Bodner board to handle the output from the pots to eliminate some center deadzone and increase the resolution. Next project is to extend the stick by about 175mm and increase the power to the motors to match the increased leverage. IIRC, there are a few posts here detailing how to do this stuff. If you want more details, I'd be happy to share. -

I've seen this happen several times in a few different industries and the result is always the same: innovative small business sells out to large corporation based on promises of more resources to innovate. Big corporation plays along for 6 months to a year, then wants to see how radical innovation is going to help the bottom line. Big corp clamps down when it doesn't see the profit projections it wants, all the talent leaves, big corp sells rehashed iterations of the original product for as long as it can, then moves on other products or uses marketing and a tactic of gobbling up new talent to keep itself competitive in the marketplace. Oculus is only mostly dead. It's zombie corpse will be kept alive, being advanced as little as possible each iteration to bring in the maximum profit for the least development expense. They'll see small spurts of innovation as they bring in new talent when sales droop, but now that it's owned by facebook all the excitement of working there will be dead and the smart talent will stay away.

Essentially, if your problem is that you've lost audio on the right side, it's usually caused, at least initially, by a loss of ground to the right speaker caused by the fore and aft stretch of the right side of the headband wearing out the ribbon cable inside it. From reading around the net, it often seems to be the ground that goes first for some reason. It was in my case. If the damage to the ribbon cable isn't too bad yet, you just need to smash one end of a length of wire in between the left headphone's bottom post and the bottom contact "hole" and run it around to smash the other end between the bottom post/hole on the right side to restore a ground for the right headphone. Instant fixed audio! It still has stereo audio, btw. This isn't just replicating the left speaker on the right side. I recommend immobilizing the "stretch" adjustment on the right side to prevent the damage to the internal ribbon cable from worsening. I adjusted it to fit my head, then marked it and wrapped it with electrical tape to fix it in place. It's a little trickier getting the headset on and off with glasses, but it works. I hope this helps!

[Official] SimShaker for Aviators
Aries144 replied to f4l0's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Sorry, quick change of subject. I want to share a personal reflection on owning the Jetseat and a fun thing that happened recently: For helicopters and the Mig-21, something like the Gametrix Jetseat from Andre is essential! I bought a Jetseat and VR headset after hearing Windy, a former RAF Tornado F3 pilot, comment that DCS with a VR headset and a jetseat was almost as good as flying the real thing. His biggest praise for the jetseat was that it let you feel your Angle of Attack. I agree! This is very useful and all but essential for flying the Mig-21. Just the other day, Windy and a few of us were flying the F-14 and playing around. Windy took a hit from an IR SAM and began to RTB back to the carrier complaining of all sorts of problems. Suddenly, Windy exclaimed "Woah!" and a few moments later began to laugh. He explained that he'd just heard and felt something like an explosion that he immediately recognized as an engine surge. He went on to say that he forgot that he was playing a game for a few moments, as he'd experienced this in real life while flying his Tornado, and that it sounded and felt almost exactly like the real thing. Things like the Jetseat or similar add a lot of the "feel" of flying to the sim. Thank you to everyone who makes, sells, supports, and writes software for the Jetseat! It really completes the VR experience. I can't fly without it! -
WHY IS THIS MOUSE SO HIGH???

That's something people can do when they're free to make their own choices. It'll either work for them, or they'll figure it out. Some people have more time than money, other people have more money than time. -

We have a current Huey operator in our group. I'll see if he can respond. Thank you very much for taking the time to make this correct!

In a modern environment, the F-5 is an underdog. It's advantages are its high traveling speed at MIL power, it's fast small (one) turn circle, and it's low visual signature. In its own era and scenario, the F-5 is great. Fighting against the Mig-21BIS, Mig-19, and Mig-15 in a simulated proxy war scenario between developing countries is a blast as they are peer opponents. The F-5E is a little weak air to ground for a 70's aircraft, as it lacks AGMs and any kind of automatic bombing system, but it does carry a large amount of ordnance for its size. I highly recommend the F-5 for online play, if you play on one of the 70's themed servers like Bushwar or Coldwar. It's by far my favorite PVP gameplay in DCS. The dogfighting, especially at low level, is amazing!

msffb + leo bodnar board?
Aries144 replied to birdstrike's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Cool! Post here if you have any further issues. P.S. I found that using the XY axis as the MSFFB2's roll axis in DCS controller settings, then setting deadzone to 100 and setting the x and y saturation to 0, eliminated issues with jittering and the roll input from the Bodnar board. Leaving the MSFFB2's x axis assigned to "roll" caused problems for me, even with 100% deadzone and 0 on both offsets. It caused an issue where full left stick caused the stick to go to neutral when approaching the left most limit of stick travel and random violent jittering of the in-game stick and control surfaces. So for each aircraft in-game, under the MSFFB column in the assign axis section, I set the xy axis for "roll," then set it's deadzone to 100% and both x and y saturation to 0. I then set the Bodnar board's x axis to roll and y axis to pitch. -
msffb + leo bodnar board?

Just completed and tested. It works great! No more input deadzone and refueling is smoother and less fatiguing. After I noticed the deadzone I shelved my stick extension project. Now I can go ahead! Thank you Birdstrike, Sydost, and Sokol! -

I was on the same server. Multiplayer game, I was flying the Mig-21. An F-5E3 fired AIM-9P at me (for clarification, not the AIM-9P-5, the AIM-9P). I was hit once in the right wing, half of right wing was then missing, also on fire, but I still had complete control of the aircraft. The second missile hit the same side of my Mig-21 and the rest of the wing disappeared, but I still had complete roll and elevator control of the aircraft. I did lose the engine and all other systems at this point, but still had complete flight control and was still able to belly land the aircraft. I will attempt to replicate the conditions and provide tracks.
-
M3, Can we get this recognized as an issue please or get some comment from your team? Sources seem to indicate that SPO 10 (Mig-21's RWR) should not have all four lights illuminate when a radar locks onto the Mig-21, only the one or two lights that indicate the direction of the locking radar should stay lit. The only exception is if a very powerful radar is at very close range, since the radar energy might be strong enough to activate all the sensors at once. This is also very, very important for gameplay, especially on multiplayer servers. It is very frustrating to have an enemy lock onto your aircraft and have absolutely no idea which direction he is in.

PointCTRL - Finger Mounted VR Controller

Personally, I don't care how it looks. Ergonomics in use and function in-game are all I care about. I want something that allows me to quickly actuate buttons and knobs in the cockpit that doesn't require grabbing a separate controller and that doesn't interfere with use of a standard HOTAS. As displayed, your prototypes certainly seem to meet those requirements!- 3421 replies

I just wanted to hop in and say: Thanks Alpenwolf. It was your server that gave me the first chance to really enjoy the F-5E in multiplayer PVP. I fell in love with the F-5's era of flight primarily because of the F-5 vs Mig-21 fights your server set up in the canyons between Sochi and Sukhumi. I'll never forget flying down those canyons, parallel to the coast, looking down branching canyons- when I saw a little black dot against the horizon, flying south... and my adrenaline hit the roof! I turned left, flew out of that canyon like a bat out of hell, sidled up behind and below that poor Mig pilot, and let him have it! Then I ran like hell all the way back to Sukhumi, my hands shaking and laughing at myself for getting so worked up over a video game. Alpenwolf, you, and one other server I sadly can't recall the name of, really got the PVP "Cold War" craze with the F-5 and Mig-21 going. Thanks for your work!

Made a mission where it does this fairly consistently. The mission involves a building between an RPG trooper and a BTR-80. The RPG troop tracks and fires at the BTR, hits the building in front of him, and the game crashes to desktop. I hope this is helpful! RPG Crash.miz

This isn't just next to a building, unfortunately. This also occurs when setting rpg troops in ambush with no buildings nearby. I can't be certain because of the crash, but I believe it is occurring when RPG soldier 1 attempts to fire past RPG solder 2, misses, and impacts the ground near RPG soldier 2. Regardless, the CTD seems fairly consistent. dcs.log-20190121-072106.zip
