There are two different things here: the VV dropping, and the nose dropping. What you are describing sounds more like the 'burble' effect, where disturbed air coming from the island's (tower) wake causes turbulence on your jet which in turn can drop you (the VV) below glideslope. I think the burble is semi modeled in DCS.

An F/A-18 Pilot’s thoughts on the DCS: F/A-18C Hornet
SCU replied to FightsOn's topic in DCS: F/A-18C
Thanks for clearing it all up. While I'm not a pilot of any type, I agree that engine response time seems realistic. Your observations agree with most of other Hornet pilots' that I've read/watched. I guess that's the bottom line on what's right and wrong in DCS's Hornet PA mode power dynamics. I suspect ED had already figured it out and are working on it, but your input adds even more confirmation, for us players at least. Thanks again for taking your time . -
An F/A-18 Pilot’s thoughts on the DCS: F/A-18C Hornet
SCU replied to FightsOn's topic in DCS: F/A-18C
Well, there is a fellow Hornet pilot of yours, Lex Talionis, who mentioned that the power is too weak in approach. But he wasn't talking about the response times, however, he was talking about how he needed to go into AB sometimes to stay on speed. I'm not sure if you're talking about response times or raw power (or too much drag on the sim's jet). -
An F/A-18 Pilot’s thoughts on the DCS: F/A-18C Hornet

Thanks for your input sir. I hope ED takes a look at these and consult their SME's & their sources and manuals to implement them. Quality info, thank you again! -
I've noticed the opposite. When landing in an airfield, just below 30/20 ft, a second or so before touchdown, there is a sharp pull down that I try to resist with almost full back stick which seems to be completely ineffective. Feels like there's a magnet that pulls the nose down to the runway. For me, it's not the VV that dips as much as the nose itself that pitches down. I have an almost 100% success rate of reproducing this while landing at airfields (where it's more noticeable than carriers). Maybe it's subtle to some folks, but try it again and pay attention to when you hear the 'thump' of the wheels touching the tarmac compared to when you began your pitch down.
-
Well it seems like you've done your homework, thanks for the explanation . I hope that ED tweaks the AIM-9 behaviour at some point to match more that of the real one.
-
Bump again. I've been trying many airfield landings lately and can confirm this behaviour. I hope we can know what ED thinks about this; whether it's what they intended or is it labeled as bug on their side?
-
Good post. I too think some improvements are needed to the Aim-9 behaviour. It's possible that some Aim-9 variants behave differently than others (like aim-9x & aim-9m), but I trust the research team at ED can properly investigate whether that's true or not. Also I wonder why you think in the video you linked that the pilot is trying to uncage? I don't think it would be very useful because, as you said, in a radar lock the aim-9 automatically follows the heat source on its own; not requiring the pilot to uncage manually.
-
The real Hornet supposedly also pitches up slightly when applying flaps, according to two former RL Hornet pilots (IvanK & neofightr/A.E. W.). However, whether the magnitude of the flaps down pitch moment in DCS's F-18 is correct is debatable and, I think, is still work in progress. Edit: And to answer the OP's question:
-
@KOLM Yep, TGT is basically the 'waypoint of interest' (to apply settings to).
-
That's true, but it shouldn't be possible to reach 4+ G's on touch down, unless you're on a pretty steep glideslope.
-
The UFC TGT, I think, is for setting TOT (Time On Target) settings. You configure TOT then select a 'TGT' stearpoint for the TOT configurations to apply to. It's in one of Wags' videos. I'm not sure that it has the function of actually designating a stearpoint as a target in addition to what I wrote.
-
The bad weather recovery video is from a Superhornet.. But otherwise, I agree that something in either the drag, FCS, engine power models or a combination of them, or something else, is off.
-
Today I had a WP as a target with also a bandit locked, it looked weird seeing two diamonds next to each other, one bigger than the other, in the corner of the HUD. It seems that older blocks of Hornet didn't have the marking on top of the diamond, but if the real lot 20 has it then I don't see why DCS's shouldn't.

Warning Caption After Deselecting Hornet Autopilot.
SCU replied to Tinkickef's topic in Bugs and Problems
This happened since day one for me. What I learned is that this happens if I hold the AP disengage paddle switch for too long; to avoid that, I would just tap on it very quickly.. It's just a temporary workaround until ED fixes it, unless it's realistic behaviour which I doubt. -
DCS manual, after reading up to page 67 currently...a few questions
SCU replied to fitness88's topic in DCS: F/A-18C
2. It would be difficult to see the E bracket, for example, when turning in crosswind/final with the VV being at HUD limits in windy conditions; hence caging the VV to the middle makes it a lot easier, among some other things. -
[NO BUG] bearing indicataor on top hud disapear after entering course
SCU replied to Smokey1705's topic in Bugs and Problems
As TonyG said, plus also confirmed from watching RL HUD tapes which have the same thing happening. -
DCS used by Real World F-18 pilot Carrier Ops Instructional vid
SCU replied to JIMJAM's topic in DCS: F/A-18C
YES! Sticky real Hornet pilots' instructional videos please mods! Maybe someone should make a new thread with links to all their videos/pages to make it as sticky so the mods don't have to sticky multiple threads for this. -
Bump. Does ED think that this is a bug/WIP or working as intended?

+1  -
I think it's been mentioned somewhere either by Wags or someone from ED that the raero has been temporarily removed for some reason. I'm looking all over the place for where I'd seen this but can't find it for the life of me.

Agreed, him and A.E. W./neofighter both. -
I think there should be an effect similar to flaps effect where the VV climbs with little pitch moment.
-
Whatever the case (whether the tones are defaulted to a set volume level or dependent on volume dial in HUD tapes) it's clear from the video that AIM9 tone makes little to no noise when detecting little/no heat signature, and starts to 'growl' when it detects some, as you can see from the linked video at the specific time-stamps above^. I don't know what you mean by the radios separated from the rest; I don't think radio audio affects other audio (like warning tones, aim9 tones etc.).
-
Ah sorry, misunderstood. I think HUD tapes reflect what the pilot hears, why wouldn't they since they're used in debriefs and reviews, I see no reason that they don't.
