  1. Ok got ya. Mil power means max dry as in you push the throttle to the detent but not through it. It's tough in the sim if you don't have a detent to feel the Max dry limit. Warthog is pretty good for that with the 3D printed part. Sent from my GM1915 using Tapatalk
  2. I think everyone here is saying the same thing here and I don't see any contradictions. Max dry or Mil power are the same thing just different vernacular. The Aircraft has a detent that you push the throttle through to get the engines into the AB range . As to the markings in the Jet I am not sure that anyone would care too much as it's not like you are gonna look at it while flying [emoji16]. Buster as well as meaning go to Max dry also has another meaning if you are a wingman flying close formation and are hitting the mil detent to keep up with lead then you call "2's buster" to get him to give you a bit throttle to play with. 3. While the radius may be fairly constant the lack of forward progress at a slower speed helps you get your weapons on earlier. In practice you slow down a lot more than just below corner speed in a single circle fight. Sent from my GM1915 using Tapatalk
  4. I'm old the new zoom is a shock for me +1 Sent from my GM1915 using Tapatalk
  5. Yes there is an optimum speed for the merge depending on the thrust to weight/drag ratio. F14 bleeds pretty fast but if you are too fast then you will be to far above corner speed. While there are a few other factors involved I normally try and do about 0.9 in a 14 as it seems to be a fair compromise. TBH I fly all the modern aircraft in DCS and while the F14 is my favourite as long as I have a RIO or a pilot with the group I fly with we accelerate to M.9 on the commit as an SOP. If we mess up and end up in a merge it gives you a pretty good starting point whatever the aircraft. Sent from my GM1915 using Tapatalk
  6. Sorry to disagree but one circle is a factor at the merge. F18 is a radius fighter and nearly always wants to force single circle at the merge. An F3 can get 1st shot on an F15 if he lets you go single circle. Because of that we always went single circle at the merge with a gen 4 fighter ( tbh we had already messed up if we end up in the merge but that's another story). Single circle radius fights are definitely not only about scissors. Sent from my GM1915 using Tapatalk
  7. Ok I will admit I didn't read the icao bit. In the 777 when we get far enough north we work grid. In the F3 we always worked in True in the AO and AWACs were quite happy to work in true. If we worked with the USAF we adapted to work in Mag as that's what they wanted in Nellis for example, however, when operating in Alaska even the USAF operated in True due the massive variation in Mag var across the operating area. Fwiw when I fly the F18 with my group we set True at the same time as we set up the Bullseye. Sent from my GM1915 using Tapatalk
  8. But only after I get TWS [emoji849] Sent from my GM1915 using Tapatalk
  9. Yep agreed slightly weird he is keeping his lift vector on the bandit so if his speed was already low pre merge then the descending turn would make sense. The bandit keeps going down in a rate fight entry in the picture so it makes sense but the bandit is being dumb. We always used to lock the guy head on to see what his energy state was just in case he was coming to the merge at 200kts but kept his wings back to try and fool you. . 10. I think the comment about the bandit reversing is if he reverses to a single circle radius fight. An angle fight would be a rate fight in Nato nomenclature as in you are maximizing your angular rate of turn. Most fights where you both turn towards each other which is a natural 1v1 entry will be a rate fight and normally will involve a descending turn at corner speed to maintain best rate. If you want a rate fight for instance F16 vs F18, then if the bandit reverses from the natural 2 circle entry then you also reverse and keep it 2 circle. Radius fights as you point out normally involve a climbing turn to reduce speed and hence radius. May even involve use of speedbrakes depending on energy level and weapons. If I am in an F18 I nearly always want a radius fight so I will watch and reverse as required to make sure it goes Radius. Last guy to reverse has decided the fight [emoji16]. 11. I can't see the YouTube's on my phone but you can't look at the basket as you will overcontrol the aircraft. You have to concentrate on the tanker references that had you level with the basket and maintain them as you go forward. The sim is a little generous on getting in the basket but that technique works. Sent from my GM1915 using Tapatalk
  12. Well try and get someone to sit in the back, duck your head and stay in that position, listen to the guy in the back while formating on the tanker for lineup. That's how it works in real life. If you can't do that use your peripheral vision to get in position about 6 ft behind the basket and then move forward concentrating on the tanker. Sent from my GM1915 using Tapatalk
  13. I know exactly what you mean about the canopy bow. I duck my head so I can see the tanker and the basket in my peripheral vision. Once in then relax back up and formate on the tanker. Sent from my GM1915 using Tapatalk
  14. TBH I was just watching Tacview. The missile was pure pursuit in the horizontal, it did loft, then at 15nm it took lead so it looked like it suddenly started aiming for a collision. Nothing more technical than that the change happened at 15nm. Taking some laggy 40 Aspect shots it became more obvious what the missile was doing. I repeated the shots STT TWS and just turning away it didn't make any difference to the missile. It's a simulation and I was curious what was going on. I don't personally mind that it's not a true representation we Iive with what we get given, I just wanted to know what it was we were given. I have seen a buddy avoid 4 Phoenix to get to the merge and kill me so I don't really see it as any more borked than the other missile in game and I love the CAT. I am more bothered by the recovery weight issue which still feels off but that's another thread[emoji57]. Sent from my GM1915 using Tapatalk
  15. It's a complete pain in the neck the amount you can manouver when plugged is tiny and the overtake allowed is 2 kts iirc vs 5 on a regular drogue. Given the limitations of our gear vs the real thing for responsiveness it's not something I would like to try in game and to make it worth it you would have to make the probe tip break of as it would IRL which would be a lot of work. 16. Ah gotcha sorry misunderstood the original post. Sent from my GM1915 using Tapatalk
  17. The pitch lines are showing the angle of the nose relative to the horizon. This is correct your nose is high because you are flying slowly it is correct as is. They show the pitch attitude of the nose relative to the horizon not where you are flying the flight path vector does that. Sent from my GM1915 using Tapatalk
  18. There are a couple of F14 DCS issues that may affect you. The Aircraft is not getting the correct weight from DCS at the moment. If you take off at max weight you appear to land at max weight. This will make your on speed AOA rather high 155-160 instead of the expected 135 at light weight. In a level turn g and Angle of bank are linked 60 degree bank is a 2g level turn if you pull 3.5g at 60 AOB you will climb. In order to break level you need to be at an appropriate bank angle. The reason this matters is because you want to rollout downwind 1.2 mile ish offset from BRC. So given a certain break speed you need a certain amount of g and hence bank angle to roll out level at 800ft. That's where the advice for the F18 comes from 350kts is 3.5 g as it slows 250kts is 2.5g etc. It gives you a guide as to how much to pull plus it's easy as you have a flight path vector to tell you if you are climbing or descending , just keep it on the horizon. In the F14 the HUD update rate is really slow so it's not much help. You can scan the altimeter or VSI inside as a guide but it's tricky. I would advise to always break from the same speed so you can get a feel for how much g is required as you break if you want to do a level break then the AOB starts high and decreases through the break as speed decreases and g decreases ( just like the F18) it's a principle of flight nothing clever. The trick is getting it right and that I am afraid is just practice. Sent from my GM1915 using Tapatalk
  19. Yea don't do 60 for a level break as you will always climb if you pull more than 2 g, you may find it easier to start slightly overbanked close to 90 and then roll the bank off a you reduce the g load. Sent from my GM1915 using Tapatalk
  20. Guys if you don't find enough you are welcome to join us on the 16AGR (16AGR.com) its a relaxed outfit but there are 3 of us that fly most evenings during the week and we prefer proper missions to grinds. We normally fly from 2100 - 2300 UK time most days. I am a pilot so sometimes the job precludes me being there but I am still on for 70% of the time. We would welcome some more guys especially if you have some suitable missions or like to do mission design. We mostly fly F14 F18 AV8 but also chuck in the Helo flight and some 2 seat training. Most of the 16AGR are on Nam time but we get together with everyone for big missions a couple of times a month. We are on all this week if you want to try a mission with us.
  21. Maybe the hydraulic pump is disabled on the fire button shutdown so you get a higher RPM but that's just a wag. Sent from my GM1915 using Tapatalk
  22. Never said I greased it on LOL. I don't really understand why the wind is fixed relationship between the ground and 1600ft Sent from my GM1915 using Tapatalk
  23. I guess that depends too Tornado and B777 you can but it's a bit of an art with both ( 38kts in a B777 is fun but I have only done it in the Sim). Leaving the crab in a bit is valid technique but just not one I see very much , interesting about the F16 as I don't think I am capable of not kicking/pushing it straight, old dogs and new tricks etc. Rarely have I been in a multiplayer server set to a significant wind tho, so I guess it won't matter too much, just wish it wouldn't double the surface wind at 1000ft automatically. Sent from my GM1915 using Tapatalk
  24. Guess my Brit instructor never read that while you could leave some crab in I never flew with anyone who did. I thought that was technique only feels like crap when you land and it's not straight. Sent from my GM1915 using Tapatalk
  25. Especially in DCS it's important to note that there are aircraft which must be landed in full crab, e.g. the F-5 and the F-15. In the F/A-18 you should touch down with half the crab angle. Where is this info from ? While you can land a T38 in a partial crab that was not the desired technique. We always kicked it straight in the flare. Never flown an aircraft that is landed without either kicking it straight or side slipping it straight at least partially. Sent from my GM1915 using Tapatalk
