Really pleased with myself, in fact smug is probably best description. I assigned the APU switch on warthog throttle to carburettor flap toggle some time ago. But the slightly annoying thing with this is only switch forward opened or closed the flap, so each time I had to flick switch forward, and then back again. So after some research I have modified the joystick default.lua file so the APU switch acts as a true toggle switch, when fwd the flap is open and when back the flap is shut. I know this has been covered for A10 etc before, I researched previous posts to learn how to do it. But I wanted to share this as I impressed myself! lol. I find the APU switch works well for this as it is easily thumbed when adjusting the RPM lever post takeoff and in the landing circuit. I then went a step further and created my first ovgme mod for this toggle switch mod. Big steps for a beginner to DCS

Haven't seen it reported before anywhere, rudder movement in the mirror is opposite to how it should be, I.e. right rudder shows as left rudder in the mirror. Thanks for your continued hard work ED team!

Improved frame rates with new Nvidia driver 388.43
crowebar replied to crowebar's topic in Virtual Reality
Yes I am flying in VR, and yes I usually update Nvidia drivers as they come out. While I haven't experienced some of the issues others have had with previous drivers, my frame rates have been a bit up and down with them. But I felt this latest update was worthy of comment as the improvement was very noticeable. -
After installing latest driver tonight I took my Spitfire up for a spin in Normandy in DCS World 2.1. no other units, just me and the airfield. Pleasantly surprised to see a noticeable improvement in frame rates from an average 35 ish to a solid 45 fps when flying same mission.

Hi danielkarlssondk I also wear hearing aids. I found that the sound was ok with the stock hearing pads but as your aid sits on top of your ear you don't get full 100%. So I purchased a set of earbuds for my Rift and they work great. As they fit snuggly into your ear you can adjust volume to suit, and get 100% sound. If you Google Oculus Rift earbuds you will see them. They are very easy to fit.

Unable to land the Spitfire; any tips?
crowebar replied to Jamesp1's topic in DCS: Spitfire L.F. Mk. IX
Watch the bank indicator needle once your wheels are down to keep her straight and avoid the wing tip scrapes. If the runway is clear and your approach was in a straight line before touchdown you can afford to keep your head down watching the indicator while you dance on the rudders to keep the needle central. No need for brakes until you sense that she has slowed enough. By which time you are probably just going to taxi off the runway. -
I concur with andremsmv, the only thing I would add is to use the bank indicator on the Blind-Flying Panel to judge your rudder inputs. Taking off, once I am lined up on the runway I look down to my instrument panel and pretty much keep focused on instruments until I lift off. 1st for a smooth increase in throttle to +8 boost, while simultaneously applying full right rudder, and then eyes on the bank indicator needle to keep her straight. If you dance on the rudders pedals to keep the needle as central as you can, the aircraft course will also keep straight. I do glance up regularly to keep bearings etc. With landing again others have talked of approach speeds and lining her up correctly, so again all I shall add to this advice is to watch the bank indicator needle once your wheels are down to keep her straight and avoid the wing tip scrapes. Again, if the runway is clear and your approach was in a straight line before touchdown you can afford to keep your head down watching the indicator while you dance on the rudders to keep the needle central. No need for brakes until you sense that she has slowed enough. By which time you are probably just going to taxioff the runway. I fly in VR using this method so can't comment how it would pan out in 2D.

There have also been reports of different frame rates depending on the sun position. i.e dawn, mid day & dusk

Thanks for that info guys, will give it a go.

Hi Mule, this is a known problem so yes plenty of us also experiencing this. I'm not aware of any fix for this so it's a case of waiting for an update to fix.

A great guide, thanks very much Jabbers

Did anyone have a solution for this? I would also like to be able to completely disable clouds until things improve on FPS in Normandy
-
Don't know what has happened, other than updates?? but I am now back to where I was with 1.5 flying the Spitfire. Frame rates down at 8 or 10, stuttering etc same as you guys. Set Terrain medium, shadows flat, PD 1.0 2 x MSAA, 8 x AF and run the Oculus Tray tool with PD set to 1.7, ASW on Auto. Gives me a flyable aircraft with a FPS of 45 - 90 (even seen 91 for a split second! wow) At least with these settings I can fly Normandy reasonably. Haven't tried dog fighting or other combat yet as still learning to take off, circuit and land smoothly.

Yes, copy that. Having seen the posts from you guys I was going to leave it until Autumn when I will be looking at a new rig. But I couldn't stay away and the funds for the rig keep slipping back, might be Christmas at this rate. After I posted I went back and set VR defaults, it was awful, 2 frames a second ish. Reset to previous settings but left trees, grass etc where they were. Back to 45 FPS. So put shadows to flat and got between 33 & 45 FPS which will do me for a long time as I need to learn takeoffs, circuits and landing. Then navigation, combat manoeuvres, gunnery etc. All part of converting from the Falcon F16 to a Spitfire. By the time I have mastered all of that I should have an I7-7700k PC and ED will have rolled out more fixes and updates.

Had my first flight in Normandy map today after a lay-off since May. Having followed forum in that time I decided to approach 2.1 with a clean install. I also expected it to be quite bad in the pit. But I must say I was really impressed. Set same settings as I had with 1.5, shadows off, PD 1.3, AF x4, MSAA x2 terrain & water low. Had a really smooth flight with a constant FPS of 45 from getting in the pit, taxi & takeoff, a whizz around the isle of white and beat up the other 3 south coast airfields, rtb and land. The only technicals were the mirror not working, and the game paused twice in the 40 minutes or so I was in the pit. Really impressed.

Installed and started using this software. It's brilliant. Thank you very much for your hard work in developing & for sharing.

Sorry Cowboy10uk, East midlands, 2 hours from you but rig is down for at least a month. A long way off, but in October the flight sim show at RAF Cosford museum is on your doorstep. Last year they had both VIVE & Rift rigs setup for us punters to have a go. There was an fsx warbird sim using Rift, A DCS mirage 2000 pit using Rift and an fsx Cessna pit using VIVE and Leap Motion Hands Inside. Big queues to fly them but worth it.
-
Thanks dburne, grounded for a month or so but looking forward to using this when setting up new PC

There were 3 stands demoing the rift and vive at the just flight, flight sim show at Cosford RAF museum last October. This was my first taste as before going to the show VR wasn't even on the radar. I sat down in a us navy warbird pit using the rift. I was gob smacked. My jaw dropped and I believe that my first words were something like F****** H*** the guy running the rig laughed and said that is wshat most people say. There was also a ms fsx Cessna sim using touch inside, that is also very impressive. For you UK guys, if you want to see this stuff before you buy, or are merely interested, I suggest that you head to the show in October

Check six, a virtual pilots guide. Well worth a read if you can still get it. Used to be very popular back in the day.

Mustang's land textures zip file package
crowebar replied to Mustang's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
Looks great thanks Mustang -
I have latest version of DCS 1.5.6 and Oculus Rift CV1. The blue pointing cross hair for mouse remains permanently visible, I believe that it should disappear between use. Over on the virtual regality there are several people reporting the same issue.

Can't see anywhere to post suspected bugs in the VR forum, does the ED team pick them up through these threads?
