  1. I drive past Barton most days and the RR299 crash still makes my heart heavy. The aircraft was due to be donated to the RAF BOB flight at the end of the 1996 display season so it’s future was secure. The left engine quit at exactly the wrong time due to a Merlin carb settings quirk which led to the tragic loss of the crew and aircraft. The AAIB report makes interesting reading. https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/542301dce5274a1317000b69/dft_avsafety_pdf_501355.pdf
  2. In the UK I’d say it’d probably come close fourth with the Lancaster in a list of iconic household name aircraft. Spitfire, Sopwith Camel, Lancaster, Mosquito, Hurricane. It’s one of those rare household name aircraft. The only non UK type I’d add to the list would be the B17, referred to in the UK by the Flying Fortress moniker.
  3. Mosquito every time and it’s very suited to the WW2 maps we have. The P38 is an interesting plane though.
  4. I’m sure the P38 is on the list, and quite high up. There’s plenty of data available I’d assume and there are many complete surviving airframes. There are several flying examples. It’s certain to cause a bit of a stir and a lot of people will buy it just out of interest. As a complex aircraft maybe ED would want to make it internally though?
  5. From the article below it appears you can still upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10 no questions asked. I wouldn’t be too surprised as if it’s up to them MS will just want people migrated and so not encouraged to glance around at other options. https://www.zdnet.com/article/heres-how-you-can-still-get-a-free-windows-10-upgrade/
  6. Even with compatibility mode? Compatibility mode does seem to be much better than it used to be, when I upgraded to Win 10 from Win 7 my heart was heavy but nothing actually stopped working.
  7. There are other threads about this. If this is real behaviour it seems strange.
  8. Aye, I have wondered about this for some time. You read of stuff being torn off in WW2 scenarios mostly but it must be an issue with modern aircraft also surely.
  9. Good info.
  10. I mean personal contracts with staff members, people refusing to release their work. I can remember problems with the assets people have used to create the models also. Could be anything.
  11. There’s some discussion of the presence or otherwise of the forward radio mast in this modelling thread below. Seems they were frequently damaged in the field and locally improvised solutions were common. https://ww2aircraft.net/forum/threads/f4u-1a-information-needed.46930/
  12. It could even be contractual issues. Those sorts of problems aren’t exactly unknown in games development.
  13. How’s the Molins
  14. Very interesting, maybe it’s time to pension off my Saiteks...
  15. Like the Devastator references are poor and only parts of wrecks exist.
  16. They admit some of the calculations are a bit arbitrary but there’s a lot of interesting stuff non the less. The “power” of the Hispano is extraordinary. From their calculations 4 Hispanos provide similar hitting power to 12 .50 M2s and the 4 Hispanos are lighter... Then there’s the Mk108...
  17. ED didn’t choose the K4, Ilya Shevchenko (Luthier) chose it for is DCS WW2 Kickstarter. It would be interesting to know what EDs choice of initial WW2 modules would have been.

  19. It seems the electrical system added heat to the primer which responding pretty much instantly by firing the propellant. The Mg131 had no firing pin even, rounds avoided the prop very accurately maintaining the firing rate of 900+rpm.
  20. The German Mg131 had electrical ammo priming to keep a high rate of fire even when synchronised.
  21. The Mg131 has a faster fire rate than the Browning M2 and can fire HEI ammo.
  22. As with all these military blob videos there’s so little detail this could be absolutely anything.
