Anybody fly this module without rudder pedals?

Doesn’t the X52 throttle have a rocker under the handle you can use for rudder control. Maybe that’s just the X45. -

Yes the AI nav should really call out contacts, it seems to have been an important part of the job.

As you say missions would be low level ramrod type attacks with a specific target, usually short range with fighter cover, Spitfires or commonly Typhoons. The purpose of these ramrod attacks was not only to damage infrastructure and materiel but also to draw out the Luftwaffe and make them engage RAF fighters on unfavourable terms. The Mosquito wasn’t a day fighter, its one of the few roles it couldn’t fulfil. It could mix it with single engine types but you wouldn’t make fighter sweeping its primary mission, it’s a two seat twin and really its always going to come of worst 1v1 versus a decently piloted FW or 109. Apparently the RAF spent a lot of time setting up 1v1 matchups to develop tactics but really running was always the best option.

As I’ve said before ED need to work hard at creating an environment where more developers are creating stuff for DCSW. There are several developers making very decent warbirds for FSX/MSFS but other than the I16 from Mr Octopus all the DCS warbirds have been from EDs stable. With a handful of planes being worked on by different developers the pressure around what comes next would be a lot less.

I don’t get the impression that the He 219 was a terrible aircraft, it seems it’s crews were relieved they had something that was at least on pace with the Mosquito. However the suggestion that the He 219 was some sort of war winner isn’t based in reality, it had very serious shortcomings. Like the He177 it soaked up some much development time it probably did more damage to the German war effort than the allies. The He 177 and He 219 seem to be the German aircraft that impressed Brown the least, in general he was very impressed by their aircraft, he was a particular fan of the FW creations. The Ju88 did shoot down Mosquitos as did the Bf110.

The He 219 needs its own myth busters episode... In reality underpowered, high wing loading led to poor manoeuvrability. Structurally weak, rough field operations often caused fuselage failure. The 400+mph figure often quoted is apparently for a stripped out version with no radar fitted. In service examples were good for around 380. Never really had the latest and greatest German electronics, no rear RWR made losses to Mosquito NF intruders common. Cabin in front of the props made conventional bailing out dangerous, the ejection system was unreliable, some crews were killed by the canopy failing to release. Eric Brown flew a couple of examples after the war and found them underpowered with poor manoeuvrability and climb rate, he suggested it didn’t compare well to late war Mosquitos. The Ju88-G6 meanwhile has everything. The best German electronics, all the toys, some of which were never jammed, rear RWR and a rear gunner as an extra pair of eyes, MW50 boost to 400mph... The only advantage the 219 had over the Ju88 G-6 was speed, it was a bit faster, but in reality not by much...

I would image we’ll most likely see a single seat style twin like the Me 110 or Me 410. Other than the systems modelling it’s only a bit of a step up from a single seater, there’s still the gunner station to model that’s like a second mini cockpit but only one. They fit in more with the small maps we have also and tend to be multi role which helps gameplay. Multi engine, multi crew to DCSW standard would be a massive project. Then there’s the problem that you really need bigger maps for the common realistic mission profiles.

A short extension will make all the difference, 7-10cm. Makes the standard spring perfect. You need to mount below your desk though. -

The A20 would seem to be a goer, especially with its single seater style cockpit that would make things easier. There are flyable examples also I think. It gets overlooked but it was used in numbers everywhere, including the Eastern Front.

At least it’s easy to move DCSW to a new drive. I copied the whole thing to a new 2TB SSD last year, along with some other gaming stuff including MSFS. It is a bit disconcerting how quickly even this is filling up though...

I’d imagine like the Hurricane that the P38 is on the list, and near the top, references and airworthy examples again. The Typhoon really hasn’t featured in sims much. No airworthy examples, only one remains anything like complete, it’s at Hendon now after being donated to the RAF a couple of years ago by the Smithsonian. No airworthy Napier Sabre engined aircraft exist which is very sad for an engine that featured so significantly with the RAF from mid to late war. Although there are projects there are no running Napier Sabres currently so we can’t even hear one by comparison Merlin’s and Griffons are ten a penny. I suppose it helps that RR are still very much in the aero engine business while Napier haven’t been for a couple of generations.

I’m sure the Hurricane is quite high up on TFCs list. It’s one of those small number of WW2 warbirds with excellent references and quite a few very original flying examples. Ground handling is supposed to be much easier than the Spitfire. The Warthog comes into its own with a short extension, it’s easy to mount below desk level without DIY also. My MSFF2 has unacceptable levels of centre slop. Although not perfect either the WH is much more precise, the build of the stick is great also, by comparison the MSFF2 feels like a plastic toy. Each to their own. I did enjoy FFB, especially with ROF which has excellent FFB, EDs FFB implementation has always been haphazard. I think it would take TM making an FFB base for their A10 and FA18 sticks for ED to take FFB seriously in 2021. Currently only a tiny minority will be using DCSW with an FFB stick. -

The British were made aware quite quickly that Norm Barlow’s upkeep had been recovered intact after his crash near Düsseldorf and presumably dissected by the Germans. They Germans initially thought it was a fuel tank but soon worked out what it was... Upkeeps were tested on land with some success but high balls were thought to be an even better proposal. The real issue was that Chastise succeeded only by its element of surprise, the RAF was very aware than Germany was alerted to the concept and ready to defend against it making delivery very dangerous. -

The main purpose of the Sea Mosquito seems to have been the delivery of High Ball in an anti shipping capacity. 2 carriers with High Ball equity Mosquitos were despatched to Australia with the intention of engaging the Japanese fleet. The concept of the RN rocking up late to the party and high balling the Yamato to the bottom seems to have been too much for the USN and high ball was never deployed...
