Tarawa landing . Why land like helicopter?
ZeroReady replied to DmitriKozlowsky's topic in AV-8B N/A
Not positive, but could it be because the Harrier's wheel brakes are barely functional and the suspension isn't built to handle slamming down on a pitching deck at speed? Just safer and easier on the jet to come down vertically? -

Should direct hits from CBU-87 take out BMP-2s?
ZeroReady replied to ZeroReady's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
I thought about that, but you start hot on the runway. It just seems like that's what they want you to use. Anyway I finally finished last night, took every piece of iron I was carrying, literally popped the last BMP emptying out my gun. Pretty satisfying. -
In a high threat environment you would have a SEAD flight take out SAMs first.

There's no high drag mk-83 that I'm aware of. I haven't dropped a bridge in a while, but what if you ripple 4 82's down the bridge? Honestly for a bridge I think you would use a GBU 16 anyway. If you're high and fast enough you should be able to throw a GBU-16 about 7 or 8 miles I believe. You would have to have some SEAD still though.

Thanks, I wasn't thinking about how heavy the armor was. I can see if it's like throwing a grenade at an AAV, which I'm familiar with, it would be pretty ineffective. Just don't understand why they would load you up with 4 87's to take out a convoy of T-72's and BMP's then. -
Can't speak with authority since I've never tried to make a mission, but I've noticed in one of the Harrier training missions for AAR, the tanker takes the same kind of nose dive from 10000 to 5000 at one of it's waypoints. So this might be a common issue with tanker AI.

Playing mission 5, inception, Stone Shield. I just dropped 3 CBU-87s on the column of BMPs, not a single kill. Saw all 3 deploy and ground impacts from bomblets.

I get good results from rolling in at 15000, pickle at 7000 - 5000, going as fast as I possibly can. I have dropped from straight and level at 2000, also going as fast as possible, but a dive seems more accurate. Sorry I haven't been able to find official guidance on it either.

I get a lot of stall shudder at high AOA and >250kts

Is the LASTE wind profile system worth it?
ZeroReady replied to HoneyBadger's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
If you want to input LASTE info just for fun you can use this https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1rTUQqJYqq3yHsXjxUMA6MVvxgfI8nudMf8Nw95V2Mqk/edit#gid=0 to convert from the briefing to CDU format. Not sure if this will be ok for you since you are in VR though -
Thank you. I thought my whole world was coming apart when I first heard the new sounds with headphones on.

For MAGVAR you should be able to just enter East 6.0 anywhere in caucusus and you'll be fine. Don't forget to press 6(E) on UFC first before entering 6.0. Just like inputting easting when making new waypoint. Press 6 first, then 6.0, then enter.

This worked for me.

I was confused when my hud didn't look right. I followed the procedure and it aligned. This seems like a big deal.

I believe you can only make a few, maybe 5? then they cycle over

Finally finished, what a blast!
ZeroReady replied to ZeroReady's topic in A-10C Operation Piercing Fury Campaign
Oh you gotta be kidding me that is so cool thanks for the patch bro! Hey what unit were you in? I was in 3/7, al-qaim in 04 and ramadi 05. -
In Flight Refueling. Dying of frustration.
ZeroReady replied to DmitriKozlowsky's topic in AV-8B N/A
I just started reading a book called A nightmare's Prayer. It's about Harrier pilots in Afghanistan. Sounds like it was really rough on those guys. The weather and mission tempo made just flying the jet and not dying priority number 1. -

Blacklightning That video was awesome thanks for sharing! I just want to add that even with TrackIr we do not have any peripheral vision or input cues from the jet. I think that's why pilots can turn their head and not lose control. So don't feel bad for just using the visual cues and lining up that way. -
That was the most fun I've ever had at a computer. Thank you Ranger79 for all of your hard work, we really appreciate it. DCS would not be what is without you!

Loaded it up just to check it out real quick, First time I've flown at night in a while, they fixed the HUD FLIR it looks so awesome now. Thanks for the mission looking forward to really getting into it with a wingman.
-
OK so I finally got the chance to play the mission with a friend, we had a blast. The explosion and collapse of the bridge is awesome flying over from a wingmans perspective. But we had a couple issues. 1. Uzi took off and orbited after we killed the Shilkas, but never responded to radio calls. 2. After landing and reloading, I could not get my mavericks to come online. Really fun mission though, thank you!

Yes, it is exactly like balancing a broom on your hand. It's a 20,000 lbs jet, it does not want to hover. If you stop focusing and making corrections for a second you will lose your balance. Landing on the Tarawa is slightly easier because you are given a 30 kt headwind due to the ship steaming forward. You are a little more stable but not much. You can't stop correcting when in hover, and it may require severe control movements to stay true.

The rockets aren't accurate like 30mm is. After a few thousand feet they will go wildly off course. I believe the range bar shows when you are within the range where they fly straight-ish.
