Guide to Oculus Rift Settings for a readable cockpit.
Mad Dog 7.62 posted a topic in Virtual Reality
I have had my Rift for a few days and have had to ask a lot of questions and do a lot of tweaking to get it to where I am fairly happy with it. I want to share what I have found and maybe save some others some time and aggravations. First of all, you're going to want your sensor pretty much directly in front of you. I had mine off to one side, and it tracks perfectly fine, but I had trouble working the switches on the side consoles. Putting it in front pretty much solved that. Second, I would make one of your HOTAS buttons Active Pause. Things are not perfect yet in the world of VR, and sometimes you have to come out of the goggles to find a keyboard combo, misplaced mouse, or something. Next, download and install the Oculus SDK. There are instructions on YouTube, and its pretty simple. This lets you bump the cockpit resolution, but in my experience I still need MSAA set at 16Q along with upping the pixel density via the Debug tool to get a clear cockpit. Also, turning on console lights even in the day makes the labels easier to read in VR. Here are the settings I am using, I am still experimenting but this seems to be close to where I will end up: Textures: Medium Terrain Textures: Low Civ. Traffic: Low Water: Low Visibility Range: Low or Medium Heat Blur: Low Shadows: Flat Res. of Cockpit Displays: 1024 Every Frame MSAA: 4X HDR: Off Depth of Field: Off Lens Flare Clutter: 0 Trees: 6000 Preload Radius: 100000 Anistropic Filtering: Off Flat Terrain Shadows: Off Note:Edited above for better frame rates! My startup routine is to start Oculus Home, load the Debug tool, set Pixel Density to 2.0, load DCS World, close the Debug Tool, and then use Alt+Enter to make DCS Full screen. If you don't make DCS full screen you will have troubles with your mouse working properly. There are some people who leave the Debug tool open, but others say it causes judder. (I am now leaving the Debug tool open....closing it seems to nullify changes to pixel density at times). All the above give me a very readable cockpit. The HUD is clear, the instruments are clear, even most of the smaller labels are very readable. VR certainly is not perfect as yet.....but after a short time in VR, going back into a 2D cockpit is like stepping back from playing a modern sim to the Atari days. Its that bad. Hopes this helps someone! Mad Dog -
Thanks SkateZilla I knew I had seen a post about that but couldn't find it.

Go to the Oculus thread, and find the info on using the SDK to bump the pixel density. It makes the cockpit gauges and labels much easier to read. Enjoy! Got mine yesterday!

I thought I had read or seen something about this issue, but I couldn't find it in this thread. Thanks for the info! I can live with things until more of the bugs get worked out. It is certainly amazing....so realistic I have found myself trying to rest my arm on the cockpit rail or reach down to switches and wondered why my hand wasn't finding anything!

OK, when I am in my A-10 cockpit, and using the in cockpit cursor to select things, if the cursor moves enough to move it off the little screen on the monitor, it disappears or at least stops being able to make selections. Any cure for this? I can't get the batterys turned on!!

I got this sorted. Since I had not installed Oculus in the default location, (put it on my D: drive) I had to go under File on the debug tool and specify the location of the executable. NOW it makes a big difference!!
-
Hmm, the debug tool does not seem to be making a difference for me. Turning up MSAA does help.
-
K, thanks Skate. Sure will be nice when we get the VR upgrades into 2.0 then.

Question on changing the pixel density with the debug tool. Does the debug tool have to be left open? And does the change persist, or do you have to do it every time you launch Home?

I bought it off BestBuy.com, got it two days later. I am cancelling my order with Oculus. There is a post by Platypus in this thread that tells you how to get it off best buy quickly.

I got Steam VR working, just needed a re-boot I guess. Rode a roller coaster.....wow.

Got my Rift today!! Installation and setup went smoothly. Watched some of the videos on Dreamdeck and such....interesting. Fired up DCS and WOW!!!!! I did not fly, my Warthog was moved out of the way to get the Rift setup, and I am sure I will have to turn some settings down as I have everything set pretty high but just sitting in the cockpit of the A-10 and Ka50 was AMAZING!!! It was like I had climbed into the cockpit of a real A-10! I appreciate the cockpit in a whole new way. I also love that you can look around without twisting your head one way and your eyes the other, it is SO much better than Track IR!! I can't wait to actually fly! I did notice what people are saying about the gauges and such being a bit hard to read. I can read them if I lean in. I haven't tried changing the pixel density yet through the debug tool, I want to get a baseline idea of frame rates before I tweak that. Although DCS fired right up, I could not try my Steam apps. Steam VR does not seem to want to recognize that the headset is attached, and so far I haven't figured that out. Any tips? MD

Mine should be here today.....just waiting on the Big Brown Truck! Hey.....they should give us UPS trucks in DCS......

I did this and it worked out perfectly! I set up the alerts yesterday, jumped out of bed at 1:00 AM to place the order, and I will have my Rift on Wednesday instead of "maybe sometime in August"!! Thanks Platypus!!!

I am kicking myself for not ordering a bit sooner.....missed the Eve Valkyire deal by two weeks.
-
When was it supposed to ship? What was your order date? Mine is TBD, ordered April 12.
-
I don't have my Rift yet so sorry if I am missing something....this sounds like it would be the way to go, but what about controls that need to be rotated via the middle mouse button?
-
Hope this isn't off topic, but for CV1 users that play DCS, what other games/sims are you enjoying on the Rift? Mine is going to be here in a month or so and I want to get some ideas for other games I might to pick up for it. TIA!

A while back, Wags was looking for info on the Abrams, I was hoping that meant we would get an module for that somewhere down the road.....

Much ado about nothing. Nice work, Thrustmaster. -
Yes! It would be a great light strike/COIN addition to DCS world!
