Any one care to speculate on performance hit?
Digitalvole replied to Digitalvole's topic in DCS: AH-64D
Yeah that’s my dilemma, buy now for cheaper and if it isn’t great performance wise just leave it the hanger till the above mentioned Vulcan etc are implemented. Or wait and see what others say about it and pay more. I bought the F14 and didn’t use it for a year (I thought it wasn’t going to be much good in SP, I was VERY wrong) now it’s my go to plane. It’s so good! Full price for the AH64 is about sixty of my English pounds which is still great value for money in my humble opinion. First world problems -

I got things to a place where I was very happy with the performance and visuals and 1 week latter a patch came out that killed the VR shader mod. Haven’t played much since then. Though am I right in thinking that’s been sorted out now? I tried Star Wars Squadrons the other day, VR performance was not good though I didn’t do any tinkering around with settings. There’s only so many hours in a day and as few of those I can spend tinkering the better. -

Well quite a few things here I hadn’t thought of, drat. I think not pre ordering this time is sound advice for me. Hopefully when the Vulcan/multithreading business is taken care of all will be well. Whatever, I’m sure it’ll be well worth the wait -
AS a VR user I live life on the edge of “acceptable” It’s the life I chose At first I thought the Apache was going to be a hog but having watched the videos I’ve done a U turn. Im currently enjoying the F14 and as far as I can tell the AH64 looks a lot less polly heavy. It’s mostly screens rather than switches which must be a good thing for our gpus. What might tip the scales in the other direction is the reliance on the “tgp” my frame rate drops in the f 18/16 whenever I have that on. Also there is the low altitude flying, but I haven’t found that issue in the Huey. And at much lower speeds I’d imagine our hardware has more time to cache things. That being said I’m no expert on such matters as how computers do what they do. What do you guys think? I’m really rather optimistic which is odd because I’m a born pessimist

This is great news for me, I’d spent all my money on Lego for me and my daughter (including a £650 Millennium Falcon) so was broke till January. In my excitement at having fun things to do with my daughter I’d completely forgot about the AH64, so though I’m probably in the minority I’m very thankful.

Thanks Remco, I saw that thumbnail on YouTube and it was just perfect, but was worried it might be taken as a slur

Just to be clear, it’s no way intended as an insult to the gentleman in the above image. Mike is the best character in one of the best sitcoms ever created. (imho) My mates used to call me Mike from Spaced. Terribly sorry for wasting 3 seconds of your life. My advice for the future is, just ignore it and move on. Otherwise you’re wasting more seconds, maybe even minutes!

Was that with the “Rough Ramblers” ? Wouldn’t his detached retinas have prevented him from flying the A10? I think he’d be very happy in the front seat of an AH64

I haven’t used the LATIRN pod yet, I’m still learning to land on terra firma, but I do agree that as the one pressing the pickle button I’d like to have as good an idea as possible as to what was about to be blown to smithereens.

So you guys have fixed the clear water shader mod for 2.7.7? If so, what fantastic news, (good birthday present!) thank you, thank you, thank you! Honestly, where would we be with out some members of this community? Sterling effort.
-
And that right there is why I have not pre ordered the AH64. I’ve got exactly as I like it (pre update, but post update it’s still ok) and I don’t want to turn anything down now. Absolutely loving the F14
-
Thanks, I’ll check tomorrow. Had a quick go just now with the ic pass shaders and it’s not as smooth as it was but still playable so one way or another it’ll be fine
-
Thanks, I should have tried that before posting. Apologies.

Hope you feel better soon SoH, glad it didn’t escalate into needing hospital treatment. COVID = bucket full of bum holes. Sorry to be a pain, but is there something I need to do with the Simplex shaders other than just pop it in Ovgme? I’m getting the same, or at least similar, error as I am with the clear water shaders in 2.7.7 with the Simplex one. Honestly after months of tinkering and nearly giving up and going back to my Rift S, last week I finally nailed it and everything was perfect. Less than 7 days latter and it’s back to square one. I’ve held off on pre ordering the AH64 but was now going to as I thought I had it sussed at last. Ho hum, such is life I suppose but I’m a bit heart broken. I know I could roll back, but Jester can use the LANTIRN now, it’s a tough choice. For what it’s worth I found no msaa, SS at 100% and clear water shaders plus FSR, sharper eye and medium shadows mod did the trick. Looked great, not much shimmer and very smooth. (F14 + Syria map).

Ok I’ve stocked up on books: Black Aces High, Tomcat Rio and F14 OIF & OEF from Osprey. I haven’t got to proper learning yet, just been tooling about dropping Mk82s on things (mostly trucks) but holy swear word meaning plops! This feels like what I thought flying a fighter jet would feel like. It’s just great, I can’t believe I’ve had this for a year and am only using it now. I’ve gotta try and learn as much as I can before the AH64 gets released so I’m not trying to learn two at once. What with all the different acronyms with these things it’s like learning a new language each time. I can barely manage English and I am English, I can’t do 2 at once. I think just flying this thing makes you grow a moustache whether you want to or not. Also I do pretend it’s a Tornado sometimes In summery: flipping heck Heatblur, what an achievement! ps sorry for asking about the D, I didn’t know

Is it this? https://andres-shop.simshaker.com/jetpad-jetseat/52-vibrating-pad-simshaker-jetpad.html Was hoping it might help my brain accept the vibrating cockpit a bit better. I’d imagine it’s rumbling away almost constantly, free back massage every flight! It’s vibrating all the time for me, probably more noticeable in VR. I’m sure I’ll get used to it. Hehe Thank you! Things like how one goes about setting up the target for the lofting on to that sam site has me scratching my head. But I suppose I’m about to go on the journey of finding out. Sounds awesome! I will deffo check out those missions. I think the stars are aligning as BVR productions have just released the Tomcast. But where would I get the hair from? oh wait.. oh good god... it’d be curly!! Oiled up beach volleyball or pube tache, that’s a tough call. Thanks for the offer of a Rio, though I’m sure you’d take the Martin baker exit after a few minutes of my flying Thanks Guys!
-
Thanks Spurts! The moustache will just take a bit of tactical shaving I think I may wait till the update and see what’s what with the targeting. Though low flying and dumb bombs is probably more of what I’m after, the Hornet is fantastic but can feel a bit sterile for want of a better word. Do you think we’ll ever get the D? good to know I don’t need an 80s haircut too
-
So I’ve owned the F14 for nearly a year now but have only just started using it. (I blame ED for providing us with too much incredible stuff to play with ) That cockpit is insanely good! And I love the way it flies, ie no fbw. But I have a few noob questions, id greatly appreciate it if you guys with your big moustaches, cigars and 80s haircuts could help me out with. First off, the cockpit shakes a lot. Though that’s dead cool some of the time, especially take off, it seems to be vibrating even in level flight and I find it starts to make me feel a bit weird after a while (I fly with VR). I’m sure this is as it should be but it makes my brain feel a bit rattled, I was wondering if a buttkicker would help. Does anyone use one, and if so what’s the verdict? Or do you just get used to it after a while? Second off, I fly sp as I don’t have any friends who like flight sims (or maybe friends at all since having kids, but that’s another story.) And I do like to move mud and play Liberation. The F18 is great for this due to its versatility but I’m a bit concerned that without a Rio with a pulse I may find a-g a real challenge (thinking sead/dead, guided munitions etc). Am I wrong in thinking this? Third off, are moustaches mandatory? Many thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to help me out. I know I could learn these things through doing, but it takes time I don’t have at the moment.

Wow! That is Cool with a capital C! Ive been at Eastbourne air show when 2 tornados flew low over the crowd and that was pretty damn impressive. What you saw must have been truly awesome. oh and since this is the f16 forum and I don’t want to get in trouble, there was a Belgian F16 there too, it flew formation with a spitfire at one point.
-
Having recently read Tornado by John Nichol, I can say the tornado crews were very happy not to be doing those low level missions anymore. They had the element of surprise at first, but that didn’t last long. I think it was more a “if we keep doing this we’re going to take very heavy casualties”

I’m going to be the guy at the party who gets asked to leave I desperately want to love the Viper, it’s always been one of my fav planes since watching iron eagle as a kid. But I keep on ending up in the Hornet. Maybe it’s because the Hornet is more multi role capable at the moment, which is great for liberation campaigns. Though this is sure to balance out though updates. Maybe its because pressing hundreds of buttons in the Hornet makes me feel clever. I always feel I must be doing it wrong in the Viper. Maybe (and I think this is the crux of it) it’s because the Hornet it a bit easier on my eyes in VR. ED have greatly improved the mfds in the viper but there just a bit too small for the res of VR and there’s not much Ed can do about that. Everything is bigger in the hornet, which makes vr flying a bit less headache inducing. Alas, I wanted so much to fall in love with the beautiful Viper. But it seems I got married to a fat lass before we met.

Oculus Quest 2 or HP G2, new future user here.
Digitalvole replied to -SkyRaider-'s topic in Virtual Reality
You’re absolutely right, the Pro sounds like the one to look out for. I watched a comparison vid of the Q2 & G2 last night, think I’ll stick with the G2 for now. The link cable seems like a bit of a handicap (can’t increase pd apparently, even a 3090 can’t handle it) and like you say, there’s probably something coming round the mountain. I’ve got used to the small sweet spot, audio cut outs and heat of the G2, it really is just the motion smoothing that’s the issue for me. -

This is very interesting for me, all those things you mention are kind of ruining my enjoyment of the G2, especially the reprojection. I barley noticed it with my rift s unless it went below 40, but in the G2 it’s everywhere. I’ve been wondering if a Q2 would be a better overall experience. Hmm this is food for thought, thanks. Is there screen door in the Q2?
