Had a very quick go today, I took the risk of not taking the safe option for carrier takeoffs and it bit me in the bum. Mission failure after circling the boat a few times and realising my three AI hombres had got stuck behind a poorly parked f18. But that was my own silly fault. Hats off to you guys, there’s so much going on and the frame rate is great! So cool watching the tomcats coming into land as I’m (auto) starting my f18. I really like Liberation for the mission planning but it ends up a bit of a pain in the bum when there’s so much to plan and or you only have an hour or two spare. Also it runs nowhere near as good as this. Like others have said, this feels like you are a pilot with a job to do. I have more questions but I’m going to spend some time to see if I can work it out for myself. Bloody brilliant! Can’t wait to try out the Spitfire campaign over he channel. thank you!

This is great news! Failing a mission is one thing, but I’m often having to suddenly return to real life mid mission. Rather frustrating, but can’t be helped. I also like being able to load up the next mission after finishing one before retiring for the night and checking out the map and objective. This gives me the following day to think about the best way to go about it, then fly it in the evening when the kids are asleep and I might actually get to finish it! Anyhoo, brilliant Thank you I bought the channel map yesterday so will deffo be downloading the Spitfire campaign tonight

That looks very handy indeed, thank you. but will it work with DCE? I thought once you quit a mission the campaign updates itself? Either way this looks very useful for DCS in general, thanks.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I see, it’s gonna look cool but is a bit risky. ive downloaded the campaigns I need but hesitated to start one as I seem to remember that if you have to quit a mission or fail it (both quite likely outcomes for me presently) you can’t replay it. Is this correct?

Just got the channel map and it’s awesome...
Digitalvole replied to LithiumR's topic in DCS: The Channel
Had a quick go on it yesterday, it looks really good and performance was pretty good as long as I didn’t go low over a town, this is with a 3090 and a G2. It’s not very big and would love for it to be extended a bit. Also a couple of very minor things, the sea seems a bit too blue and the fields a bit too green to me and I don’t know why there is an area of grass below the cliffs of Dover. But who cares, it really doesn’t matter, very glad I bought it. -
Please please please! This could mean including the greatest city in the whole of the UK, Brighton & Hove! Where there is at least one pub on every corner and the house prices are so ridiculously high most Brightonians now live in Worthing! Oh and Worthing too please as that’s where I live now.

I really want this map, I live just west of where the map ends and was in the channel yesterday, but only up to my knees. How is it in VR? Did you need to turn the gfx down at all? Edit. Im going to buy it and pre order the mossie latter today. Can’t wait -
Brightness really seems to be the main problem now, though I also don’t like the “pixel” effect. Is the brightness something that can be tinkered with through modding? It seems so simple a problem to fix and so glaringly obvious, but then what do I know. There have been other mods for mfd readability so perhaps if one could easily just up the brightness it would have already happened or we’d have a mod. I reckon ED must be super busy right now, because there’s a couple of things wrong in the game at the moment that seem wouldn’t take long to fix. The other thing is AI F18s failing to make it off the carrier due to weight.

Thank you for the reply, and thank you for all your hard work. I’ve been using the dedicated server trick on my 2nd pc for Liberation 4.0, deffo helps in cpu frame times. I’m guessing there’s info on how to set that up in the installation instructions. I saw screen shots earlier in this thread of all sorts of stuff happening on the carrier deck whilst you wait for your turn to take off, looks incredible, can’t wait! Would you recommend the light version for VR? And how would you say it affects immersion? Sorry to be a pain. I hope to have a chance to check this out tonight, thanks again

Please could someone spare a few minutes for a poor sod who gets very little “play” time? I’ve tried DCE twice in the past, the last time was late last year, but that second time I found that the f18 campaign had got a bit to demanding for my hardware even with pruning enabled (at the time 8700k 1080ti 32gb Ram and a Rift S) where as Liberation 2.0 was fine (with culling) I’ve since upgraded to a 5900x and a 3090 but now using a G2 (the lord give’th, the lord take’th away.) Ive tried the latest Liberation, 4.00 I believe, and even with culling there now seems a bit too much going on and performance suffers as a result. Also I don’t really have time to plan all the missions at the moment. So my questions are, how’s DCE in VR these days? I was very impressed the first time I tried it. But the second time even with pruning it was too much for my hardware. I saw there is a Light version, is that recommended for VR? Which one do I want for a modern FA-18C experience? (From this I should be able to work out the same for F16, A10c etc.) Any help is greatly appreciated, I only get about 2 hours a week to play and would rather not spend it experimenting. Blimey, VR forces me to do enough tinkering already! Thank you in advance

It’s almost painful, because when it’s working well it’s just so damn good! Nothing beats it imho. I used to be a pretty big gamer with all the consoles and a gaming PC but since discovering DCS + VR I don’t play anything else (except maybe a bit of Combat Mission, oh and I’ll buy anything with Warhammer in the title cause I’m a Warhammer junkie but I don’t play them for very long haha) and have sold everything except the Switch (my little herberts love the switch). Its just the best thing since peanut butter and jam on toasted sliced bread. All other games seem pointless in comparison. The other sim with the incredible world map and incredibly boring planes () seems to be making some good progress with VR performance using culling apparently, I’m sure ED are watching and paying attention. But like you say, we are a niche within a niche. If we were a political party we would probably have one seat, right at the back.

Cool thanks, haven’t had a chance to “fly” since last week. Maybe I will tonight, if so I’ll check it out.

Does one need to turn up the msaa in order to get a decent image? And if so does that gobble up the FPS gains of the mod?

Steam VR motion reprojection, is this normal?
Digitalvole replied to Digitalvole's topic in Virtual Reality
Haha yes please though I fear bleach may be the only thing that works, i feel dirty. Yeah that’s what I’m using, I don’t want to repeat what I said earlier in case I get struck by lightning hehe. It’s interesting where the wobble (as I call it) from asw or mr appear, for me in the Hornet in the G2 I get wobbly radar (top bit of the ddi) and also on the HUD which makes it quite hard to ignore, in the F16 it’s a lot less noticeable. And strangely enough in my Rift S it’s the complete opposite! Really noticeable on the f16s mfd buttons and HUD but barley notice it at all in the f18. -

Thanks for the info, Im going to try that FSR thing when I get a chance, see if that can keep me out of the wibble wobbles. I never thought I’d say this but, Facebook does it better. yuk, going to go wash my mouth out. -

Digitalvole replied to Digitalvole's topic in Virtual Reality
Righty oh, thank you. Drat and blast though, I don’t like the constant wobbles. It is what it is -
I’ve noticed something I find a bit strange with motion reprojection coming from oculus’s asw and was hoping someone could tell me if it’s normal or not. When having MR Enabled as opposed to Always On I’m getting judders when strangely the fps is going above 45fps. For example I’ll get the judders, look at fpsvr and it’s jumping from 45 to 53. This seems odd to me, with my rift S it would be 40fps with asw enabled unless it went below that or hit 80fps. In the same mission with MR Always On it will just stay at 45 or dip below but it won’t go above till 90. Is this normal or am I doing something wrong?

I’d argue World of Warcraft had 11 million subscribers because Blizzard made sure it could run on relatively modest hardware. AAA titles will get bad reviews if frame rates suck. I think the cycle is true but in the rest of gaming the current hardware is taken into account. Do you guys recommend DCS to friends with VR headsets? I personally don’t because I know they aren’t going to buy a very expensive gfx card to play one game. That’s a real shame. edit. I just want to add to this, I think msfs2020 is going to continue to have a positive impact on DCS, it’s started with the clouds and I’m sure there we’ll be other things that we see improve as a result of there there being, I don’t think competitor is the right word, a peer (?)

I’m sorry, I got the wrong end of the stick there. My apologies. Im married with two kids, I am all to familiar with compromise hehe But we all have a line in the sand where we aren’t willing to compromise any further. I’m in no way at that point with DCS right now but I do worry for the future. Something that was said about the new maps performance by one of the moderators had me concerned for how things may be in a year or twos time. To your point about the latest software pushing past the limits of hardware, I don’t feel this is too often the case with games. Crysis and MSFS 2020 spring to mind but in general I’ve found if you have the best hardware you can usually stick it on ultra and forget about it, though perhaps the advent of 4K has changed all that, VR certainly seems to have!
-
I had this too, my solution was to buy the F14 in the hope it’s Phoenix missiles would do the trick haha. But I got distracted by something and have yet to learn the F14. So maybe no solution at all. Anyway, I feel your pain.

I think most of us with 30 series cards have higher res headsets, my 1080ti did ok with my Rift S. Perhaps you have hit the sweet spot for your needs and that’s great. Just speaking for myself, the concern is where DCS is heading. The recent Marianas map is a good example, can you run that ok? (honest question, I’m very aware that the internet makes it easy to sound rude.) Or how about a mission with quite a lot going on such as a Liberation mission? Again it comes back to the individual and what they are doing in the sim, but it sure would be frustrating if they release an incredible dynamic campaign that none of us can run. I used to play games in the early 90s too, but things have moved on and as a result we expect more. If you went to buy new car today but they said I’m afraid you’re only able to buy the cars from the early 90s you’d be bit fed up, right? Finally, immersion, quality, performance pick two. I know that’s how it is now and to a greater or lesser extent always will be and we need to be realistic in our expectations. But if we don’t strive for better then we might as well have stuck with Falcon 3.0 and called it a day. And frankly DCS has been heading in a slightly worrying direction when it comes to performance since 2.0 brought us deferred rendering (is that what it’s called?) but I like to believe they have something up there sleeves. I think threads like this are more of a “hey guys, *waves* don’t forget about us” kind of deal, not a “this just isn’t good enough!” Kinda thing. That’s how I see it anyhoo.

I’m going to try hard not to repeat what others have said, but I’ve just woken up so this may become a rambling mess. So many points here that echo my own thoughts on VR and DCS, pretty much since I started playing in 2016 with the CV1. But what is and isn’t acceptable is such a subjective/personal thing when it comes to VR it makes it a tricky subject of conversation. For reference, I play SP in Liberation campaigns with a G2, I have a 3090 and a 5900x and 32gb of RAM. It can certainly feel like the hardware is always one generation behind the headsets, and I don’t know about you guys but for me it can be hard to know that the game could look so much better with what one has, but one has to dial it back in order to get decent performance. Take the brilliant mods that most of us use and the great guides that are made (thanks Speed of Heat and others ). Without those things would be considerably worse but they still in one way or another make things look a little bit not as good. (Sorry still trying to wake my brain up) And as one needs to use quite a few of them now the effects are cumulative. I think another factor that I for one find myself battling against is that of; I’ve spent thousands of pounds on hardware, surely it should look better than this! If the top end hardware can’t do it then what can!? This is know ones fault but my own of course but it can feel like you’ve bought a Ferrari that’s had the engine limited to 50mph. Has anyone tried msfs since there performance improvements? Has it got better? can we even say that here? My worry (for a long time now) is that DCS is heading in the opposite direction. It’s just getting more and more demanding on hardware. I haven’t even tried the Marianas map as I think I’ll find it pretty much unplayable, which is a shame. On the one hand the dynamic campaign is likely to be incredible but on the other I doubt I’ll be able to play it. I feel more communication from ED on VR in particular would be so very much appreciated. As at the very least it may help us manage our expectations or, if the planets aligned and the right sacrifices were made to the correct gods, offer us hope for the future. A little bit of hope goes a long way! For example, what percentage of the player base are us VR users, and therefore how high a priority is VR in DCS? Are there things that can be done? etc. Just from a VR players perspective I for one feel like ED are building a magnificent palace but sadly on swampy ground. That being said, I find it hard to believe that such clever people would be doing this if they didn’t know that they had ways to make it work. Here’s looking at you Vulkan! It would be fantastic to hear from ED more often on VR matters, please? Ramble end.
