  1. 10-27-2020, 10:31 AM Originally posted by nick10 View Post Hello, I’m considering picking up the X56. Any thoughts? I’m at the point now where I want a HOTAS stick and throttle but I’m not about to stump up $1k for a warthog. what are users thoughts please? You do get what you pay for with Virpil and VKP, etc.. However, I did purchase a brand new X56 HOTAS ON SALE, Directly from Logitech, before wearing a mask became a fashion statement. Lol. There are plenty of reviews, videos and discussion on the X56. Here are some bullet points that are based on my experience. It is a great value if you can get it on sale or find one listed at an MSRP of USD 249.00 If you are comfortable making physical modifications, you can turn the HOTAS from an OK system to a surprisingly good one. If you have average or smaller hands, you will have trouble reaching all the buttons and hats on the stick. (make a thicker palm rest with clay, foam, 3D Printer, etc.. ) Out of the Box, the HOTAS Throttle can be too hard to move because of the special friction grease used inside. (Do a YouTube search on ) FYI: Save the grease by placing it on another part of the base away from the blades and wires. You will see a good spot once you take the throttle apart. I recommend the Spring Mod for the X56 Flight Stick. If you remove the single mainspring and replace it with 4, you get a stick that centers and feels more precise when moving away from the center. For any buttons that are hard to reach or feel when pressing, I got some SUGRU and moulded it onto the Trimmer Hat, Weapons Release and other buttons to get more depth and feel. Sugru can be removed with a knife and rag. The Slider on the throttle is misunderstood. It functions like a 2 position toggle switch. To use it properly as an Airbrake you must use the provided Logitech software and set it up with "Quantize Time" options. I did not want to use the software for Airbrakes so found out how to do it by editing a DCS module joystick Default.lua. Here is a link to User Files Downloads that gives examples for a few planes: X56 Speed Brake Slider - FA18, F16, A10C, F14, JF17, AV8B. I learned from that Mod and made similar fixes for all the other planes that I own. If I had the money, I would buy the premium HOTAS, but for now, I am much happier with my X56 when compared to the now-dead X52 that I got from Kajiji 5 years ago! If I charged myself for the time I took to research and complete these mods the stick would have cost 3 times more! #4 I left the grease and it got easier with use. #5 Excellent mod, improves the stick to highest quality control and totally removes centre slop and no need for dead zone. I used Home Depot sku# 127107 Model # 311-626|Store SKU # 1000127107 Paulin 7/16 X 3 1/8E Utility Spring #7 I used to use the software quantize but this mod is better, removes interference with system key stokes when 'out of focus'. Well done:thumbup:
  2. I originally saw this spring set up on one of YSIAD_RIP posts. After reading the posts here I decided to go to Home Depot yesterday and pick up springs. I removed the centre spring the stick came with and I must say how unbelievably smooth the the stick is now. With the dead band now removed as there is no need for it, and zero slop in the middle subtle movements are so easy...such as air refuelling...a totally different experience. The 3" springs I have are more thinnly/finely wound than what I see here making for softer resistance but with zero change with range of movement. Thanks all for your posts!
  3. Thanks, I've always used the pop-up knee-board because of the difficulty with seeing the actual kneeboard.
  4. In VR it's difficult to see, is it possible to move the kneeboard in FA-18 on left knee closer to the kneecap? Thank you.
  5. Thanks all for the helpful information!
  6. Thanks for the info!
  7. It goes away and returns every 30 seconds or so.
  8. How do I stop the black 'auto' box from popping up in the middle of the HSI? When I press the contrast button it pops up. HSI button 5 [tacan] has 2 extra lines of information below time to go, a 4 digit number and a 2 digit number, what are they indicating? Thank you.
  9. I thought they used to be visible in Topics. I do see the info after clicking on a thread.
  10. Looked at both didn't see much difference.
  11. In user settings try changing the Forum Style.

  13. I'm trying to locate their rank, year joined, total posts to date, usually located by the name of the person posting. I thought this information was visible under the name on the forum page...I see it in the threads, perhaps I'm mistaken. I do like that I now see the thread showing read during the same session. Thank you.
  14. Thanks for the follow-up.
  15. When I enable an option such as raindrops or grass or trees, I notice there is an impact on performance. If there is no grass or trees in the view or if it's a sunny day with no rain, is there still a performance impact of any kind? Thank you.
  16. Did you bind them to the axis commands control?
  17. Good clear analogy:thumbup:thanks.
  18. Thanks guys for the follow-up. So using both systems gives you a 'backup' if 1 fails. Does INS give better accuracy than GPS across the board?
  19. I've been reading this thread about what we've been talking about " INS improvements in the 19 Aug 2020 Open Beta" It leaves me thinking, why is INS [iNS alignment] needed at all if GPS is available? Can't navigation/weapon delivery/FLIR be done solely on the basis of what GPS provides? Going from point 'A' to point 'B'...can't help but think of my auto's GPS/NAV system starts instantaneously and can drive me to whatever GPS co-ords that I input anywhere on the planet...if there was a bridge over the ocean.
  20. Thanks again:thumbup:
  21. Try selecting the stick as buttons in your Logitech software.
  22. I will use IFA starting from 1986 and going forward to 2020...the level of detail in the sim continually amazes me, thanks for that info! I read below that if you're in NAV and you have GPS there is an advisory on the DDI. Is there an advisory if you're in IFA and you don't have GPS?
  23. Thanks good tip:thumbup:
  24. I see, so the system doesn't have to take time to re-align by switching from NAV to IFA? By the way, what determines the availability of GPS, meaning, wouldn't you always switch to IFA since GPS is always available?
  25. Thanks for that...I'll try it again later. Also can you please explain the difference in functionality between NAV and IFA.
