Which full sim modules you'd like in FC3?
falken76 replied to Katmandu's topic in DCS: Flaming Cliffs
I didn't ask them to change anything. I responded to a poll. I don't think they should take away anything. I'd buy simple versions of the aircraft if they were available. If that's an issue, make the servers have an option to not allow the mixing of FC3 style aircraft and the clickable cockpits. The admin of the server can make that decision. Just suggesting that results in people saying you should go play war thunder, dcs isn't something you would like, stop tormenting yourself... Ridiculous -

What makes you think I'm tormenting myself? I love DCS, even with the bugs, bad optimization, the few planes and the elitists. Thats the beauty of a brilliantly designed product. If it's a good product that people enjoy, they'll still buy it. DCS is a great product. Why is it you want to push me out of DCS and make me go play something else. Am I not supposed to be able to play this game because I'd prefer an FC3 model? I get the feeling that's what you're suggesting. -

Nice, this makes sense, now I know why the missles are easy to dodge when I am able to get an Aim 9 fired off immediately after the missle warning alarm goes off. It forces the flanker to go defensive and he must be losing his lock on me. I am getting pretty good at dodging missles now, but if there are two planes on me, it get really hard to dodge all the missles because I lose so much energy. I just realized I wasn't dropping my tanks first either. I'm sure that will make all the difference right there. -

Wouldn't that already exist with anyone who flies current FC3 models like F15, Su33 etc? What if you are interested in this particular game because you like that part of it and not so much the hard core simulation part? Does that mean you need to piss off and go play war thunder instead because this is a simulator not a game. (WTF does that even mean? Not a single person on here is ever going to really fly one of these planes) -

But I don't like any of the other sims, I like DCS. So my only option is to take my ball and go home? -

Thank god they still allow users like me play this game. I'm glad I have an option for simple aircraft. Short of sprouting a 3rd arm I couldn't control a plane and mess with the controls and I play in VR. Agreed, "None" should be an option otherwise it's not much of a poll. -

I can't get friends to even consider this game, and here is why: "Want to play an awesome flight sim where you fly an A10c?" "Sounds cool, is it easy to learn?" "No, the manual alone is 700 pages long" "You just asked me to read a steven king length instruction book, **** that." Or "What? 700 pages? I have kids, I can't devote my life to this" FC3 was an easy sale. "I hit CTRL+ Home, ALT + Home to start engines? This is kind of easy so far, I can get the hang of this" Then this happens: "My controls suck, how much was that set you have that looks like it's from an arcade machine? "$200" "Forget it, that's way to damn much money to play a video game" -

I'd like to see all of them have a FC3 simple version. I enjoy this as a game, I'm not under any illusion that I will ever need to actually fly a plane. I do this for nothing more than entertainment. I don't want to sit in the cockpit and do stuff like flip all the switches, boot up simulated computers in planes that are slower than a 486 dx/66 and wait eon's for something to align itself. I'd much prefer to select my weapons, hit a couple of hotkeys and take off. If it's an absolute insult to those who say "This is NOT a game, it's a simulator", then allow the server to decide weather to allow FC3 style control on planes that have clickable cockpits. Could you imagine the claims? "The only reason you beat me is because you must be using FC3 style gameplay and didn't have to flip any switches." -

That was an interesting read. Now I want them to add Aim120 C7 and AIM 120D missles to DCS. It was the Aim 7 that had an effective range of 12 miles wasn't it? AIM 120D apparently can go 50% further than the other AIM 120s, not sure how that would work in this game. I don't want this game to have people locking others up at 80 NM out and firing missles. -

When you learn how to dodge the missles it gets alot easier. Don't lock them up right away. Understand your radar on the left and the distances that those squares represent depending on how far that radar is looking out. I can get as close as 10 NM sometimes before they even lock on. The bottom right hand corner of your hud shows two important figures. Time for your aircraft to merge with the target, and under that is time for your missle to reach the target. These are in seconds. In the bottom left corner is a count down timer that shows up after you fire your Aim 120 missle, that's the countdown before the missle goes Pit Bull and uses it's own guidance system to reach the target, when that counter is at 0, you can unlock and evade or find another target knowing that your missle is still tracking your target on it's own. After a little bit, you'll use all these bits of information to decide when the optimal time to fire your missle will be. -

I never fire a missle at 40 nm expecting to get a hit, I only fire them at that distance to stop them from beaming and to force a reaction out of them. After you've played this for so many hours, you start to understand where everything is based on what AWACS says. So instead of heading directly at your target, you can fly indirectly towards them and fly around coming up from behind. They usually seem to be heading towards you unless they're flanking. If they're high enough you can see their contrails. I try to fly like that so I can try not wasting a missle by forcing a reaction because we're both heading directly into our radar cones. This seems to work well with AI, PVP is instantly onto my ruse and I usually get my ass handed to me like a hat though. -

I'm still learning how to use the F15. Those damn flankers in single player are hard for me because they can always lock me up BVR and fire a missle before I can even get a lock. Even so I can't soot until I get closer. So I don't waste Aim120's on Flankkers anymore. I just make sure I'm going fast when I merge so I have enough energy to work with, I know I'm going to have to be dodging a missle or two. I use Aim 9's, I hit 6 twice so I get that huge bore site and then it seems pretty easy take them out. Just be mindful not to bleed off your energy, they'll try to get you do that right away. Scissors, Yo Yo, it all works. Don't just chase. Now I want to go play this damn game..... -
What? Of COURSE the author of a mission should take performance into consideration for their mission. That's the job of the author of the mission. When things improve, requirements change. I'm sure most of them are mindful of that. When they make a change that includes making all the trees collidable, then existing missions that were released prior to this MAY be impacted by performance now that things are different. When I load old missions the performance isn't that great if there are a lot of units. I haven't tried a new mission yet with a lot of units. I can keep adding planes to the through the inferno mission. I had 8 of them flying around and task manager showed that only 3 gigs was being used to run DCS and those planes, if I add more the ram use went up by a small amount. That is 1.08 of through the inferno, I don't know if it's optimized for DCS 2.5 but it probably is since that version came out after DCS 2.5. I think newer made missions will perform well on 8 to 16 gb ram. The more units on the mission the more ram you'll need.

The guy that was told he has low specs for the game was the guy that has 12 gigs ram and the 780ti card.

It's there because everyone does not have the same spacing between their eyes, so this allows you to make small adjustments to match up with your actual eyes. The headsets usually have a slider they can move as well. Oculus Rift has the IPD slider under the right eye. Your optometrist can tell you what your real IPD is.

I don't know what the acronym means. But this is what I do in the F15c I do NOT lock the target up until I'm close and ready to fire. If at all possible, I will have the radar up and as soon as I'm about 20 NM from target, I'll lock them up, I immediately get the fire missle lights to illuminate and I release. You can see the time it will take you to merge with target and beneath that is how long it will take the missle to intercept the target, this is in the lower right corner of the HUD when you have the missle selected. I use that information in conjunction with the radar on the left. If you have it set for 20 miles each square represents 5 miles. If it's set to 40 miles each square is 10 miles, 80 each square is 20 miles and 160 miles each square is 40 miles. If you hear them starting to beam you, you can hit E to jam and it might buy you a few additional seconds which could be the difference between life and death. I also fly fast so I have a lot of energy in case it turns into a dog fight. You'll have to be ready to switch to a weapon like an Aim 9 or Aim 7 if you get close like I do though because if it doesn't take them out in 1 hit or you miss, you'll be close and Aim120 is a long range missle.

LOL, I wonder if Intellivision did the voice synthesis on that?
-
I thought those were custom sounds on the Through the Inferno server.

Is this a bug? When I get in a dogfight and get hit with a missle it usually destroys me or seriously cripples my plane. Sometimes I'll line up an enemy and we both fire missles, sometimes the AI locks me up before I can lock on them, so I keep heading in their direction to lock them up, fire off an amramm, twist to pull away, fire one more then dive to start dodging the missle. A few times I took to long to start the manuvers and the missle gets too close. I seriously don't think there's any way I could have dodged these, I was diving and dropping flare and chaff, but I heard the missle blow up and it clearly hit me, but there was no damage. I test the controls and it appears there was no effect by the missle. I check external view w/ f2 and there's no damage. Did the Chaff or Flare divert the missle and it exploded right next to me but didn't cause damage or something? Or is this a bug? Sometimes I don't feel like I should have made it through a fight because this happens every once in a while.

When are VR Users Gonna get there moneys worth?
falken76 replied to huggy98's topic in DCS: Combined Arms
I don't know how well trackIR works, I never had it. I have an Oculus Rift. I can't believe the level of immersion. I'm sitting at a desk in my office chair. I'm clearly stationary and sitting upright. When I am high up and flip my plane to look down at the terrain, even though I'm sitting upright at a desk, it feels like I'm upside down in a fighter plane seat looking down on the terrain. I strain my neck muscles as I constantly look over my shoulder trying to track that missle that's coming at me. Many times I have to rotate the plane on one axis so I can turn my head and get a better view looking over my other shoulder. I'm fully looking back behind me in reality while this is happening. I have to do it very fast, it feels like I'm there. I actually feel anxiety and panic. It feels like I'm really dodging a missle when I lean forward and dive towards the ground hoping it's a radar missle that will lose track against the terrain. I don't know how TrackIR can give a close experience if your view is l imited what you can see in front of you on your monitors. When you look back over your shoulder, you would need to physically still be looking forward because your visuals come from those screens. VR is 1:1 head movement and that makes this so immersive. -
Thank you for this, it might actually be that I was not aware there was a UI layer, perhaps there's a different zoom function and I assigned the key to the wrong one. I will look for UI Layer.

Please let us know how that Vive Pro does. It seems like a rip off with just slightly better optics than Oculus Rift with an $800 price tag for the headset with no controllers or base stations. The setup will cost over $1,200 vs $399 for a rift. I'd like to know how much better the optics are for 3 times the cost. My guess is it will make it look the same if not just barley better than the rift and it has all the upgrades they charged extra money for. Like headphones and a premium headstrap. Though by the price, it seems they're still charging you.

I play in VR and I can't identify planes easily at all. I am starting to recognize the F15 when I see it since my brother and I are flying it and we see each other on screen so much. But you have to be so close to see the shape of the aircraft, you'll be in the middle of a dogfight by the time you can identify the plane. But by that point they're already shooting at you so you just engage. I am now able to see planes out in the distance very easily, I just can't identify them if they're not showing up on radar.
-
I don't have a problem checking my six in Oculus Rift. I really suck, so I can certainly see the other planes get behind me and shoot me down with missles or guns. But I can also see missles get close, then pull hard and drop countermeasures and see the missle miss because it can't pull the G's. I'll probably notice the shortcoming when I get much better, but right now I'm a noob who doesn't know better. I'm just happy I can land on a regular basis right now.

Now I understand why you don't want to use it in game. Rotation around that axis would make leaning movement very unnatural.
