Deka Simulations announces the DCS: J-8II for DCS World!
Harlikwin replied to Mike_Romeo's topic in DCS: J-8II
No, not at all, it does look similar though. Its basically an enlarged mig21, using 2 mig21 engines. -

So, I think your first point can broken down into two components. One. I don't think the various issues with DCS in terms of completeness or realism bother "new" players, since its largely a case they have no idea what they are missing or what modern air combat is. Two. It absolutely does bother more experienced players that know better. But aside from the sim that can't be named (now with VR) there really are no better options. On the second point. Ultimately that is a developer and standards problem in DCS. On the one hand you have a generally excellent module like the M2k evolved into. And say the mig21 which at the time was great, but needs serious updating. It isn't a documentation problem with the 21, its a dev resources problem, and eventually I Think they will fix it. Its a simple as they will be nerfed or banned from PVP. -

I very much doubt any of those are actually doable for DCS. And that fundamentally is another major issue for DCS modern. -

Fair enough. I don't really do VR gaming past flight sims, so I'm set for a while I figure. There are some other interesting miniature HMD's coming for PC's too. Yeah, once I got all the various bugs/issues figured out, I'm pretty happy with the AERO. Still don't love the earbuds, but its doable. The only remaining weird issues are that I can't get the eye tracking to calibrate at all (dot doesn't move). And then I'm getting random 1-2 sec blackouts in DCS from time to time (and also in the eye tracking calibration). -

Honestly you won't see that stuff because of documentation issues largely. Even the current crop of DCS stuff is missing huge swaths of capabilities. DCS modern, is literally modeling 4th gen jets as "super duper Gen3 jets". Most of what matters in modern combat is missing or badly modeled in DCS core and the modern planes. Thats just the way it is, and IMO will continue to be. With the older CW stuff, you actually have enough documentation to do a 90% job assuming ED fixes up the core engine well enough. -

Ultimately, the future of DCS is cold war. DCS modern is basically a dead end. Currently we have like ~10 Cold war modules (F4/23/A7/A6/F100/G91/kfir/J8PP/mig29 (mig17 and su17 likely too)) in the pipe, and literally 1 modern module (EF). And really for modern what more can plausibly be done? ED likely will squirt out an F18E that will be a warmed over C model. You've got the Rafale (unlikely), Mirage2000-5 (maybe), And the grippen (again unlikely) and the F15C (maybe). Thats it for modern, likely only 1-2 more modules. Meanwhile for CW you have smorgasboard of 50's, 60's and 70's planes, I can think of like 20 off the top of my head. -

No

IDK, I'm getting like anywhere from 45-90fps with the aero, which is about the same as my old G2... So I'm pretty happy. -

So what eventually ended up working. And I don't even understand how its working was. Adding an OpenVr.dll with the opencomposite.dll in it and running it through steamVR. Bizzarely reshade still works (yay), and now XRnecksafer works too (the entire goal of this). It makes 0 sense to me whats going on but it seems to be working for me. Yeah I see the runtimes in steam VR but there is no option to change or set them. -

Yeah, that is a good point. And likely taiwan would have the same concerns, given the whole area is primed for war. -

Well thats what shows up when I follow these instructions https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2791489010 I was using a G2 before that ran thru WMR. I wonder if there is a way to disable it. Though it doesn't seem to be running at all. Also there was no way to change to just Open XR in the developer settings that I could see. I can run Varjo OpenXR but I think thats not what we want based on page1. -

nullI managed to switch it to this by setting it in the openXR runtime tools, which says its enabled. it does WMR tho. openXR is off in the varjo runtime, but open VR is on. It still looks like its somehow going to steamVR cuz reshade is loading and XR necksafer doesn't work, but VRnecksafer still does whacky things. -

Weird. I tried this and it asks me if I want to run with those arguments, and I say yes, but still the stupid thing boots into steamVr instead. I do see the Varjo tool and black screen in VR saying its in openXr tho. Do I need to install an OpenXr or opencomposite DLL somewhere? -

Yeah, I mean I want it sooner rather than later too, but DCS is DCS. As for the PP, frankly I find it pretty dissapointing like alot of people, but if thats what they could make thats what they could make. Given that its basically using F16A avionics I'd rather they did a F16A (preferably an early 84 ish blk15) -

Yeah I tried that too, doesn't work. Either the shortcut or doing it directly in steam, it still just boots into steamVR. I recently read in the other OpenXr thread some recent windows updates might have broken stuff so IDK if its steam, me, updates. null And now weirdly it will start steamVR on the screen, however the headset thinks its running openXr and showing a blank screen (can see this in the Aero software "reapater" view) -

So, there are 2 versions, VRnecksafer which afaik uses 2.01,2.02 etc to 2.09 versions. This one is whats broken but interacts with DCS in steam VR mode. Then there is XRnecksafer that has the "beta" 2-5 nomenclature. This AFAIK won't work with steam VR (I did try but nothing happens) (works fine with MSFS) I'm willing to give OpenXr a go, but I can't get DCS to launch into OpenXR using any of those arguments on page-1. I'm on the steam version, which does let you use those args but it doesn't seem to accept them or use them. Yeah I cranked it max and that was big improvement, definitely more clear than the G2 and with a very large sweet spot. I'm still getting 45+ per the dcs tool, and it seems perfectly smooth so I'm happy. Necksafer is the only thing I need to get working. -

I was actually pretty disappointed by that. I'm still tweaking the crap out of it (cant get openXr to work at all). But my hope is to be able to read cockpit text without having to zoom in like with the G2. Generally the clarity is a bit better than the G2 RN, hoping I can optimize that. -

No issue with the 4090 in dcs. I did see some lagging/stutter in msfs but not sure if its 4090 related. Getting it running in steamvr is straightforward. Aside from the fact I cant seem to get nexcksafer to work. All my attempts at openXR have failed this far. -
Do that every time.

So I've been using neck safer for a long time with my G2, no problems. Got an Aero, and its being totally whacked out. Like it will set the view well under the plane facing backwards or sideways. And recentering the view doesn't help. My old G2 would put the view above the pit the first time you engaged it but then after a recenter it would work normally. Any ideas as to whats going on?
