  1. That’s interesting to hear that you’’re having the same issue with the eye distance from the lenses and needing it further away from your eyes. I have the consumer version with the foam face pad and I get the same issue. At this point, this is my biggest issue with the Reverb. I solved the broken ear piece (took it into Best Buy and had them fix it) temporarily until my replacement arrives. So I’m living with seeing parts of the inside of the lens edges for now as the super clarity is so far worth the annoyances. My IPD is 64, so I don’t think that’s the issue. It’s simply that the lenses need to be further away from my eyes to get the correct eye relief. I literally have the side straps completely loose and the headset is still being pulled too tight into my face to get the correct eye reliefs so I don’t see the inside of the device. I need to research if there are any aftermarket face foam makers to see if I can get one that is a bit thicker to move the lenses a bit further away. When I pull it slightly forward with my hand, its perfects. But it won’t stay there. And yes the sweet spot for the crisp focus is small, so up and down position seems super critical as well.

Not to get the thread off track, but something has been nibbling at the back of my mind for a while and I wanted to ask this question: What is the Rough % of folks on DCS who stick to one aircraft, hardcore learn it inside and out (systems, tactics, etc) vs the folks who buy multiple aircraft and just enjoy flying them around and have the G-whizz factor? I ask because I have three modules at present (F/A-18, A-10C and F-16), but have been concentrating on only one for the last nearly 11 months and feel like I’ve only scratched the surface on getting really proficient at all the systems and such. Certainly with work and a family - unless you’re flying 8 hours a day 5 days a week - I don’t see how all those with every DCS module available has any possible hope of learning much about them. Yet, I see people here on this forum with 5, 6, 9 different DCS aircraft in their hanger. It’s not a criticism by any means, everyone has different goals for why they use DCS. I’m just curious what the mix of hardcore geeks who want to fly the plane as close to the way its used IRL vs the casual entertainment factor. I admit I’m probably somewhere in the middle. Sorry in advance about the tread drift.
  3. Yep, that’s why most fighters fly on speed AOA numbers rather than an IAS - because AOA already accounts for different weight configurations. You certain CAN fly an approach IAS on final, but you would have to go into the performance charts to get the correct approach speed at that given aircraft weight. The ideal AOA is always a constant for a given platform.
  4. As others have said - the stick (pitch) controls airspeed (and hence AOA) and the throttle control descent rate (glide slope). That’s one of the hardest things to teach someone who has no aviation background because they are used to driving a car where the throttle solely controls speed. So its a bit counter-intuitive until you go out and practice it. One of the best exercises to learn/demo the correct technique is to fly the jet straight and level at altitude away from the ground like 10K feet. Get it trimmed up at whatever airspeed you want at a medium throttle setting. Once its flying straight at a constant speed and level with no stick or throttle inputs - then practice how throttle affects climb/descent by reducing throttle without touching the stick. Watch the sink rate, pull the throttle some more and watch the sink rate increase. Now add throttle and see the sink rate decrease to the point where you can almost get it to fly level again without touching the stick. Then repeat the exercise starting again with a trimmed aircraft in straight and level flight at a constant speed. This time leave the throttle alone and play with pitch with very small pitch up or down movements of the stick (<5 Deg). Watch how the airspeed changes with pitch changes. This ^ is what you will have to do when flying an ILS or a carrier approach. It’s the ability to recognize which hand needs to move to correct for whatever is wrong. If you have the aircraft trimmed for on AOA properly, you are mostly making throttle adjustments to maintain the proper glide slope. THE most common mistake is to try to pull the nose up if you’re low or push it if high. If you’re on speed DON’T CHANGE THE PITCH! Of course if you’re both off GS and off-speed, you’re problems are that much more complex to solve. Hence why getting the jet trimmed early is so critical to reduce your workload and increase your success rate.
  5. Thanks all, it doesn't seem quite as intimidating as I initially thought. On a related question, how hard is it to set up a private server if I want to initially just fly with some friends to get used to the multiplayer environment before going into some more involved stuff?

Hi all, I'm contemplating making the leap from offline SP only training missions and would like to stick my toe into the MP waters on a very limited basis - more like 1 on 1 or small group training missions rather than the full global war free for all servers. What additional Hardware and/or Software do I need to get started? Consider me an absolute noob in this regard (I am) so don't assume I know anything about it (I don't). So what do I need to have in place be able to talk to other players online? How do I meet up with them online? Is VR compatible with non-VR users, etc etc? What questions am I not asking? Huge thanks in advance.

    Easy refueling

    The key to both the basket and the boom is: DON'T LOOK AT IT!!!! Fly formation on the tanker and the rest will take care of itself. I absolutely couldn't get plugged on the basket in the Hornet until I watched Grim Reaper's video where he says "Don't look at the basket, don't look at the basket......" THis same advice is 100% applicable to the boom as well. Line up on it at Pre-contact position and then drive forward by looking at the visual references on the KC-135. I find as soon as I even glance at the boom as I begin to get close to it, I PIO like a MF'er.

    Typically only the KC-10 can move around fighters. The -135 not so much. But agree, I find the AI boomer to be very tentative to plug even when I'm stabilized in the sweet spot.
  9. Yep. Also note that as you get heavier - your AOA will change to a more nose high attitude (higher AOA) because your speed is remaining constant. So you have to account for that as well.
  10. For those of you who are having this issue - when are you turning on the laser? The GBU-24, unlike the other LGBs, require continuous lase from release to impact in order to work correctly since it doesn't use bang bang guidance. I have not tried it yet in DCS, so not sure how it's being modeled.
  11. While relatively minor, the amount of time that the smoke from the BDU-33s remain visible is WAAAY too long. In DCS, it lasts for some minutes while IRL its maybe 15-30 secs at best. It literally is a small puff of smoke from a one time smoke charge in the bomb, just enough to see your impact if you roll during the safe escape maneuver or someone spotting it from a tower on the range. The one's in DCS smoke forever as if its a smoke signalling device. Is there any chance of getting this turned down to more realistic times?
  12. Are you shooting when in range? If not, that's the likely reason they are falling short. Another possible reason is are you putting G's on the jet (pulling up) just before release? That's usually another cause of weapons, bullets falling short.

  14. Nope, it works the way it's supposed to. I actually find the A-10 a bit difficult, but only because I'm used to the way the F-16 works. ETA, that's why using the FPM to set the aim off point is so critical to ensure the DIL tracks through the target.
  15. Hmmm, not seeing this at all. I was doing some CCIP practice just last night with BDU-33s and Mk-82s (singles) and the bombs were hitting right where the pipper was at pickle. However, I'm running the stable version off of Steam so maybe the bug never made it to me. Aside from any bug, the success of CCIP bombing is to have a stable platform at the moment you press the release button. Having G on the jet, banking, turning, etc all will contribute to a miss. You can drop in a slight bank as long as it's not changing. The squirrels running on their treadmills in the bombing computer have a hard time keeping up with any changes. ;-) One of the best techniques is to use the flight path marker to set the aim off point (AOP) beyond the target and accept the dive angle even if its not a perfect 10, 20 or 30 degree dive. Freeze the AOP, get the DIL to track directly over the target and then wait for the pipper to get to the target. By freezing the AOP, you ensure that you're not putting G on the jet, which is 99% of the time a culprit to a miss. In fact, a common technique is to very slightly unload the jet (slight push on the stick) just before pickle. With practice, you should be able to fairly easily shack a vehicle sized target with a single bomb without having to use ripple or pairs. In fact when I'm practicing, I try to make it a mental game with myself to call the bomb impact point in my head before I see the actual impact by noting where the dot was at pickle in relation to the target. For instance, just off at 4 o'clock, Slightly 12 o'clock, etc. CCIP can be very precise if you do your part.
  16. Thanks all for the help. It seems to work fine now with more light. I think another error I was making was I started WMR outside of Steam and then it seemed to run again when I went into Steam with the STEAM WMR. Also the recenter trick works like a champ. I wasn’t even aware of that feature.
  17. Why would I be trolling??? I’m honestly trying to make it work. Why would I make this up? When I get home, I’ll be happy to send pics to show my taped on ear piece and how I’ve had to pull the foam out from the headset to try to get the eye box far enough away from my eyes so I”m not seeing the inside of the headset. And I’m pretty sure I don’t have an unusual shaped face. The Vive fit prefect the first time. If you have any suggestions on my setup, please feel free to add something constructive. If not, then reading and replying to my posts are entirely voluntary.
  18. Ok thanks. I’ll play around with WMR and the room lighting. I have been doing the Left/right/down thing when it prompts me. However, it usually jumps into the virtual house as soon as I look left and never lets me get to the other points. Also, everything else works normal within DCS. I can look left, right, up and down in the cockpit and all is normal. But as soon as I move my head straight backward or forward or or slide my head side to side while looking forward - the cockpit position is now “glued” to me and moves with my head. I thought I had the room pretty bright, but I’ll try to add some more lights on.
  19. So just recently I've been trying to play around with all my settings to get my new Reverb running well. So far, so good. However, I'm encountering a weird issue that I'm stumped on how to fix. I've set up WMR and Steam VR (both Beta) and followed all the Thud4DCS as well as @stuartaston's settings. When I get into DCS, everything works fine EXCEPT when moving my head forward and aft, the cockpit moves with me forward and aft. Swiveling my head Side to side is fine like looking down each wing line. Up and down is fine. But if I try to lean in - the whole cockpit moves forward with me and I can't get any closer to the HUD or the UFC. Same thing if I lean left or right while keeping my head pointed forward.... the whole cockpit slides left and right with my head. I'm assuming I F'd up some setting somewhere in either DCS or WMR..... any ideas on how to fix this. Huge TIA!
  20. BTW - I've been "flying" with it for a bit and really liking the resolution. Its a noticeable improvement over the HTC VP rez. But everything about the ergonomics of the headset seems to be an afterthought and sucks, IMO.
  21. Hmmm, the sound quality to me is poor and about half of the bass and volume of the Vive pro. The HTC VP ear cups nestled into the ear much better. The reverb barely rests against mine. If I press them hard into my ears they sound OK, but as soon as I release holding them - they move way and the volume is very low even with everything turned up max.
  22. Which numbers? Are you talking about Rmax, Raero, Rmin, etc?? Head on aspect, beaming, tail aspect? Far too many variables and too many dynamic things to take into account to have a single number.
  23. I doubt ED would refer to a specific headset or manufacturer. Revert seems more likely correct in context. But yes, I don’t know what they would “revert” to.

  25. Sweet thanks! And for the set and save position using the keyboard, how do you do this in VR? I assume you have to keep your head still while hunting around for the keys.
