I think the best rule is to stay at least 10 miles from the target area in a safe zone , set the autopilot to fly in a lazy circle and use the TGP to scan the target area. The TGP is excellent at long range, and much less effective at close range. When you have located a threat/target you can create a mark point and continue your search. when you are confident that you have accounted for all/most of the AA threats you can plan your attack. Creating a new flight plan using the mark points to engage AA threats first. Then mop up the remaining targets.

You cant leave it like that! How did you set up the Predator? was it something like this... 1) Place Predator over battle zone at safe altitude 2) set predator to invisible/invincible in advanced actions 3) Set Predator to Orbit 4) place Predator GCS and Trojan spirit in a safe area 5) Set Callsign, Freq, and On-route action = FAC for GCS Please please tell us more Tom

Mission Editor (Onboard / Comm)
Frogfoot1606687865 replied to Lange_666's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Very strange. EDIT: I noticed you have 'Take off from Parking', but I have Take off from Ramp' as an option. Maybe there are two different builds out there? -
Mission Editor (Onboard / Comm)

Hmm, I can see the COMM field, but I don't get an ONBOARD field. I do have a field called BORT# though. Tom -
Great ideas, I think the virtual JTAC does have some variation built in. For instance I have had 'Type 2' and 'Type 3' calls depending on the location of friendly forces, different weapons requested for different targets. However I have yet to have a target lased for me. I am looking forward to the development of the JTAC, especialy in the MP world. Imagine if you could select the post of a JTAC in MP and spawn in a Hummer, drive around the land scape spotting targets and directing A10's overhead and lazing targets, marking with smoke etc. It seems that all of the components exist in the current Beta in one form or another. Cheers Tom

Try 'live pause' - Press 'Left Shift', 'Left Windows key' and 'pause' together. -
Hi, Last night I flew a mission and ended up getting the Lightning pod all tangled up. The TAD displayed 'Gimbal lock' and the diamond icon on the TAD was wandering around the screen. I eventually untangled it by flying in circles. but I couldn't get it to 'go boresight' by pressing china hat aft short. What is the correct procedure to a) avoid it happening in the first place, b) quickly rectify it if it does happen. Cheers Tom

Well sorry to disappoint you. I have never been interested in 'benchmarking' my system, only interested in adjusting settings to obtain sufficient FPS for smooth gameplay (40-60 fps). As such I have never tried A10 for any length of time with HDR on Water on full, shadows on full, 16x aniso, 1900x1200 res, AA 16q on the 8800GT. All I know is that It was a slide show and totally unplayable, (<5fps) I just lowered each setting and noted which increased fps, and eventually got to a point where the FPS was acceptable, all be it a a cost to the visuals. Hi, I have been flying the A10 now since it was released on beta. Origionaly I had a Nvidia 8800GT which was fine with Blackshark, in fact I ran that at 1900x1200 with frame rates in the 40-60 range. However The A10 beta required me to lower resolution down to 1400xsomething to get playable frame rates, In addition I turned off lights in Options.lua and lowered many settings to get smooth frame rates. I have heard many times that 'this sim is cpu limited" well my experience was that it taxed both my CPU and video card. Well Today I took possession of a Nvida GTX470 and WOW what a difference. HDR on, AA up from 4 to 16Q, Aniso filtering up a couple of notches, Lights on full from off, Water on full from low, Shadow on full from low. In the quick action mission no 2 the fps were pegged at 60, but the visuals, my-oh-my what have I been missing. Simply stunning. I haven't yet played around with draw distances or scenes, its currently set to low and medium respectivly (as jerky gameplay ruins the immersion for me) But I imagine 'draw distance' and 'scenes' will have a big impact on CPU loading. All in all don't believe everything people tell you, If you see fps improvements by lowering resolution then you will see improvements with a new gfx card. Hope this helps someone who is on the fence as to upgrading the GFX card for this sim. Cheers Tom

GGT, I agree you can slew the Mav however it seems even more reluctant to lock than usual (I have never managed to get them to lock once the cross hairs have disappeared ie breaklock mode) as soon as I release the slew button they revert to breaklock mode.
-
That's good to hear, thanks Nate. On a slightly different note I had a bugger of a time last night when trying to target a convoy of tanks. The first locked up nicely, but when trying to lock up the second it went into 'Breaklock mode' where the cross hairs disappear altogether (except for a mm or two right at the edge of the MFD) For the remainder of the mission I couldn't lock anything with the Mavs. Has anyone else come across this? Is there a way to reset them to their original state (where they have a 2-3mm gap in the middle of the cross hairs)? Cheers Tom

Page 459 of the manual has the freq
-
Hi , I was trying an ILS approach to Kobuleti last night in poor visibility and could not get it to work as expected. I set the freq 110.30MHz in the ILS and made sure it was powered on, Set the course bug for 70deg (I zoomed in on the f10 view and used the ruler to determine the exact runway orientation.) I switched on the ILS mode on the NAV mode select panel, and flew towards the steerpoint marking the Runway. After a while I picked up the ILS signal and got steering cues on the ADI, I flew down the glide slope following the cues. Feeling really pleased with myself.... Until I clear the cloud base and I am not aligned with the runway at all. I am heading for the threshold but offset about 5 degrees to the stbd. This resulted in a missed approach, I found I had to adjust the course knob to 65 on the HSI to compensate. I found the steering cues to be very different to what I am used to, the vertical cue was Ok once I realized that that changes with Roll angle rather than heading, but the Horizontal cue seemed pegged out of sight until the glide slope indicator (GSI) was very close to being lined up. Then it flashed into view and as soon as I was very slightly off the GS it vanished again, It seems slightly over sensitive, The small GSI tick on the left of the ADI was much more useful. Cheers Tom

If my memory serves me correctly there is a button on the TAD (second one up on the left hand edge OSB 17), which will copy the current hook as a mission point. So you could do the following 1) select TAD as SOI 2) Slew cursor to where you want the WP 3) TMS right to set mark point 4) TMS up to hook the mark point 5) Hit OSB17 to add markpoint as a Waypoint I assume you will then have two copies one as a Mark point and one as a WP. What benefit this would give you I don't know. Cheers Tom

Three Questions (Maverick, JTAC, Airspeed)
Frogfoot1606687865 replied to theox's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
In that particular mission you need to set your AM VHF radio to the correct freq, (The one closest to the throttles) Then you must be in line of sight of the JTAC, if a hill is obscuring the JTAC he wont respond. Make sure you complete the 9 line brief, at one point you have to read back the 9-line to the JTAC - there is no prompt for this you have to do it manually by using the radio commands, or he won't send you the point data to your TAD. It does work, but in my experience some times causes a crash. With regard to the radios the front one is VHF AM , the middle one is VHF FM and the one at the back is UHF Cheers Tom -
Is there a way to determine the course bearing between two WP in a flight plan? Say I want to follow a flight plan but my HUD packs up and I want to use the HSI in steerpoint mode to get back on, and follow the planned route using the steering bars on the ADI. The bearing pointer on the HSI gets set automatically, however the course has to be manually entered. I cant for the life of me find where the course is displayed. Cheers Tom EDIT: Note to self, must check spelling in title before posting!

Setup wizard can't find files
Frogfoot1606687865 replied to SmokeyTheLung's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Firefox will automatically rename your download files by adding a (2) or (3) if a file already exists in your download folder with the same name. Simply move the four files into a folder on their own and remove the extraneous (2) from the setup.exe -
When editing a mission click the 'Flight' menu item (along the top of the window) the select 'Prepare Mission' you will be placed in the cockpit of the A10. You then program the various systems as you like. Tom

Eddie's extended checklist and 9-line guide
Frogfoot1606687865 replied to sobek's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Right here goes, I've been flying a few missions with JTAC support and have a few questions. 1) Does any one else experience the odd game crash at different points of communicating with the JTAC? For instance one crash happened as I signed in, another at the moment the assignment was complete and he confirmed the targets destroyed. I am going to see if I can narrow down what causes it so I can do a decent bug report. 2) When tasked by a JTAC to take out a target, I have the location of the TAD (little red square) and instructions like "attack MM218 546, attack heading 50/120 egress to TOAD, SA6 0.6/ NE Would it be best practice to create a new route on the CDU with WP1 being an IP some 7m on a reciprical bearing between 50 and 100 degrees from the target, WP2 bieng the target Mark, and then waypoint 3 being TOAD Cheers Tom -
The SPI of other members of your package will show up on the TAD as small 'wedding cakes' joined by a blue line to the attacking A/C. So this gives you an indication of enemy units in that area. You can hook the wedding cake symbol and make it your SPI if you like and go in to help. When being tasked by a JTAC the location of the target will be marked by a small red triangle on the TAD when you have completed the 9 line procedure and received point data. As for any other units locations I don't know. I would expect the known positions of enemy fixed assets to be stored to the data cartridge or broadcast over DL.
