right service pack 2 is just more bloated security from M$. EDIT: I just went and checked on problems people are having and some solution service pack 2 solves. Actually it seems M$ has abandoned XP non service pack 2 OS support ( unofficial :) ). There actually are some serious OS problems that one may or may not experience without sp2. Soooooooooooooooo After 3 months on sp1 I just finally upgraded. Its unfortunate that even we as the rulers of this planet patronize a company that is 40 billion in the black and still suffer an erratic computer!!!!!!!!!! :)

Dont forget to run memtest86 once in a while, I had some laying around from my old comp and started to build a new comp with it for sale. Ran memtest on the mem and found one of the sticks bad after about a year of use. Corsair should have me new sticks within a week, not even a reciept required. Needless to say I was a little surprised. I ran the mem at 2.8 volts. 2.7 default. Reason I say this is because it may have been causing me some problems right before my switch to 64 bit platform. The error happened in test one and was very minimal resulting in a very minute screw ups and that why I think i didnt catch it.

I have the xfx 6600 gt . Yes its as cheap as I would go but it also does kick some butt. Keep in mind youll need to stick with 768 res and be carefull of setting things too high. Also if a whole lot of stuff is going on be prepared to dip into the teens for awhile but mostly BVR is like 50 fps CAC can be maybe an average of 30 -35 fps good enough for me but its rumored this card benefits from a 64 bit platform too. check this out http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/2004-27gpu2_25.html

RED ALERT The new spyware program from M$ and the new IE 7 requires service pack 2 . What is this going to do to our LOMAC INSTALLS? Remember this ? I hope we get down to some solid answers about this issue below people have been talking about and what the new patch does to fix it. Someone in the UBI forums wrote ??????????? QUOTE: Last of course what happens with sp2? HELP!!!!:( FROM UBI FORUMS I think I found the ultimate solution to the campaign/msvcrt.dll/instability problem on windows xp sp2. First make sure you have the msvcrt.dll that came with lomac in the lomac folder (this is for those of you who tried replacing it with other versions). Now create an empty file named "lockon.exe.local" without the quotes of course in the same folder where lockon.exe is located (C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Eagle Dynamics\Lock On). When you start lomac you will get a couple of dialog boxes saying "The procedure entry point _resetstkoflw could not be located in the dynamic link library msvcrt.dll", just click ok and continue, go into your campaign and play it. The explanation. What we have here is a classic problem known as DLL HELL. Lomac comes with its own msvcrt.dll but due to the way it loads dlls, it ends up always loading the one in the /system32 folder which is buggy (it loads ntdll.dll which loads other dlls which load the wrong msvcrt.dll). The trick to force windows to load the msvcrt.dll in the lomac folder was to create a file with a .local extension, as in lockon.exe.local, which forces windows to load the right dll. I just tested the su25 campaign which worked for me and it flew it without errors for the first time ever. I would like to know how it works out for other sp2 users. UN QUOTE

Thats a great idea, anyone know how to do it?

I dont think its a big issue, I think the only reason they are there is because they are lazy. I mean come on think about it ...this game takes serious study work and money. People loose intrest cause of the complexity, hardware problems, lack of commitment etc etc imho.

Its has been proven in other forums that reinstalling the os and any MB bios update for the support will give you the support for the X2. This proof can be found in cpu tests in sandra. example: a score of 11000 will turn into about double that in the math tests. This is a widley noted thing for msi neo platinum boards that so far support all X2 Cpu's and has so far been the fix for real X2 performance.

Really though why would 3d mark 2006 have anything much to do with LOCKON? Seems to me this new bench mark doesnt match the game software. Maybe a better clue for fancy stuff like FEAR or the like?? Like I have always said for years and even more important today. Benchs are becoming worthless unless its compared apple to apple with NEW respect to what software a person is running on the hardware. Sorry I just cant see a match here. I mean do the tests of 2006 really mirror Lock on?

I know I think it was a AIW. They were running the creative platinum soundcard thing with the extra box of outputs and inputs. I wish I could give more detail. All I can say is that when the video card was gone so was their sound. I had to set bios for onboard sound. Yes this is the way it was. Had to rma the thing TWICE. It was probley a AIW. Long time ago I forget. Microsoft service pack 2 is basically just security stuff, check the specs before you just think you need it. Most people dont. Some old cheap motherboards need a new bios for it too. Service pack 2 is worthless for me. I dnot like thier firewall. I use norton antivirus and the Sygate firewall all the security I need with those. The sygate firewall is free and has a huge forum on thier site for issues. PLus it works UP AND DOWN. Dont forget MS antispyware or Spysweeper. Then there is this info off the ubi forum : I think I found the ultimate solution to the campaign/msvcrt.dll/instability problem on windows xp sp2.
