metalnwood Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Tested DCS in DK2 with Oculus Runtime 0.4.2 - runs pretty good, nothing is broken :) Nice to know, I see someone on the oculus forum had problems so I wasn't going to upgrade at this time. When you say runs pretty good, any improvement or just no step backwards? Thanks!
Krupi Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 OMFG... Amazing! Windows 10 Pro | ASUS RANGER VIII | i5 6600K @ 4.6GHz| MSI RTX 2060 SUPER | 32GB RAM | Corsair H100i | Corsair Carbide 540 | HP Reverb G2 | MFG crosswind Pedals | Custom Spitfire Cockpit Project IX Cockpit
Krupi Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 (edited) So firstly the 3D effect is just utterly indescribable, It feels so real it has completely blown me away (I wanted to pat the fuselage when I looked out of the window. Even with the border that you can see wearing the DK2 (Two small black bars on the top and bottom and much larger ones to the left and right) it doe not take away the immersion. This will be reduced/fixed in the consumer model as they will be using a larger screen. Which brings me on to the screen, as you may of heard the current screen res is really not good enough due to the lens showing the pixels and the type of screen they are using does not help with this issue. The consumer one (Slated for released May 2015) is reportedly going to have a larger res screen. At present the Samsung 1440P AMOLED from a Samsung Note is the rumour. Personally I am not sure that will be enough to entirely remove the pixel issue, but time will tell. Overview Positive No judders, even with high settings. Immense sense of immersion, you will want to touch the cockpit (You really have to see it to believe it). Head Tracking is superior to the Track Ir. Negative Screen Resolution No cockpit clipper (You can lean all the way through the window and if you are not properly centred you will clip though the pilots head). Strange feeling (A little nausea after having a dogfight and I almost fell out of my seat doing five times when doing manoeuvre... both of these will probably/hopefully go when you become accustomed to it). I will update this review, when I get to spend more time with the headset. To give you a sense of the immersion, when setting up the DK2 you start off sitting in front of a virtually reality desk with a desk lamp on... the lighting actually made me think I had turned on my real desk lamp and took off the headset to turn off my real lamp!!!!!!!!!!!! Crazy. metalnwood Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Krupi, so the most part the view outside of the cockpit is OK. After a while, like you I get a bit of a sick feeling start to creep in. I think it is the frames being too low. In something like live for speed you can stay there for hours as it is silky smooth. While dcs is OK, it's still not that silky smooth required to keep the nausea from slowly creeping up in VR. One thing, I have judder from the cockpit, at times it can be constantly hopping around, not a judder you might get from panning, just the cockpit frame doing a small dance by itself. Very annoying.
Krupi Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Yeah, I started getting that Judder. I think it only occurs when there are many buildings around, when there is not it seems to be fine. CookPassBabtridge Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 You can't. This is sorely needed. Given that the DK2 resolution is still not quite up to the task, a zoom is needed to be able to see finer lettering and detail, or simply to help manage looking around the cockpit at the limits of the DK2 camera bounds. KLR Rico Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 It sucks that you can't zoom, but I guess that's easily remedied by the devs. I set up a makeshift oculus rift today, I can't wait for the consumer version! A couple months ago I heard about Google Cardboard, which lead me to the Durovis OpenDive. I printed one, which was the closest I've been to the rift's tech. It was a hit at work and with my kids, but it only made me drool even more for the OR. Today I had the idea that I might be able to stream DCS to my phone and play on the dive. I used nvidia stream on the PC and Limelight on my phone, along with my 3 point cap for facetracknoir. In DCS I set the monitor option to stereo, and got the side-by-side stereo that way. I have a galaxy note 2, so at 1280x720 the resolution isn't great, but it *does* work. I'm really tempted to get the oculus DK2, but I'm pretty sure the wife isn't going to be down with me buying this thing twice. ;) i5-4670K@4.5GHz / 16 GB RAM / SSD / GTX1080 Rift CV1 / G-seat / modded FFB HOTAS

meishibinder Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 As with some others, I have been experiencing this strange cockpit stuttering whenever I rotate my head. This is clearly different from frame-rate judder caused by setting things too high. This "cockpit stuttering" disappears when positional tracking goes out of range, so I presume it has something to do with irregularities between head tracking and positional tracking. Watching captured videos of DCS with DK2 show that this phenomenon is not universal, so I imagine that there are some workaround that can be done before official updates. Are there anyone with solutions?
aeliusg Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 Only thing to do would be to place the camera further back.
VO101_MMaister Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 OK chaps, I managed to test it. It is truly awesome and immersive, but it is a serious handicap against trackIR equipped opponents considering the exercise you need to put on to follow your opponent in a dogfight or to check the airspace around you. I can only imagine using it online on "Oculus Only" servers.
