Ratfink Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 I've been thinking about upgrading my 23" screen for a while to make DCS and my other sims more immersive. Now 4k monitors have come down in price, and 2k monitors are not much cheaper by comparison, I'm wondering if it may be worth considering a reasonable 4k monitor. My local store has this one. Anyone using it? http://www.johnlewis.com/samsung-u28d590ds-4k-ultra-hd-led-pc-gaming-monitor-28-black/p1575393 I've read in a mag that running 4k monitors at 2k res is perfectly acceptable in terms of picture quality for games, better than at hd res anyway, to avoid the obvious fps issues running at higher res. Is this the case with DCS? HiJack Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 That looks like a good screen but does your GEFORCE GTX 670 have a display port? I think that is required to utilize the 4K resolution.
Ratfink Posted September 6, 2014 Author Posted September 6, 2014 Yes, it has a DP port so no worries there! shagrat Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 (edited) The Samsung 4k screens that I read about until now all had sub-optimum rates for gray-to-gray (10 msec) or used overdrive to compensate... which as worst case result in a little blur on edges. To use the high resolutions, the video RAM of your graphicscard is a factor. For 4k even 3GB may be a limiting factor to the screen buffer. And with Nvidia introducing G-Sync against tearing you want to check your new 4k monitor supports that as well... Ratfink Posted September 6, 2014 Author Posted September 6, 2014 Let me explain, I'm not ready to upgrade the graphics yet so I will not be running it at 4k resolution. I was looking at a Dell 27" 1440p (aka 2k) but as they are still around the £400 mark in the UK, it seems more economic to buy 4k monitor now and upgrade the graphics card as and when I can. HiJack Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Yes I am quite satisfied with my 27" now but it is getting old so I plan on changing it. The PB287Q sure looks like a good alternative.
aeliusg Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 IMO 4K is not worth the trouble unless you are going to get a very large screen.
cichlidfan Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 IMO 4K is not worth the trouble unless you are going to get a very large screen. Replace trouble with cost and I might agree but if you do photo editing or other graphics applications, it might well be worth it. I certainly like using Photoshop on my 2560x1440 and it was pretty nice when it was used for DCS too. aeliusg Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Well for general Windows usage it's inconvenient, and for gaming it's not that much of a leap for the cost. I guess some of your more technical applications might benefit from it, but color reproduction on 4K TN panels is yet another weak point. Some thoughts to keep in mind if you intend on staying with your new purchase long-term. At that price point I would go with an ROG Swift: http://www.asus.com/Monitors/ROG_SWIFT_PG278Q/, but I'm not sure about the exact price in the UK.
doveman Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 You can get a 27" benq VA panel which looks a lot better than even IPS by all accounts, for £160, which is a lot less than £400. The viewing distance to properly appreciate 4k on a 50" screen is about 3.5ft, so you'd have to sit pretty damn close to a 28". My 27" 1920x1080p just doesn't have a good enough resolution for gaming. but it is 144hz which is something you never want to give up once you've gotten used to. I'm just waiting for the price to drop a bit because ouch! I would love to know from those that have made such a jump if the extra resolution improves DCS much? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
cichlidfan Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 I used to run DCS on a Dell U2711 (2560x1440). The extra crispness is definitely noticeable and appreciated but I gave it up for a large size (40" TV). I miss the resolution but I would rather have the size since I had to choose. EDIT: I am still enjoying the Dell since I use it, on a different machine, for photo editing and non-flight sim gaming. shagrat Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Was just pointing out, that 4k plus more than 60Hz doesn't mix currently. The resolution partly defines the ability to spot an object, plane or vehicle in DCS. My guess is, any higher resolution may display a little dot of one pixel as soon as mathematics say so. I remember my upgrade from 1680x1050 to 1920x1080 was astonishing in terms of spotting! So if DCS is not changing the way it calculates distance vs. visibility 4k may enhance the spotting quite a bit. Personally I'm looking forward to 4k, but at the moment I wait a bit for GPUs and Video RAM to keep up with the trend and hope they fix the current issues with HDMI, DisplayPort and modes and what G-Sync will do... Screamadelica Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 A possible compromise could be the new Benq 32 inch monitor, the BL3200PT which has a native resolution of 2560 X 1440. Benq made this with the larger screen size to compensate for the smaller pixel size at the higher resolution. Worth a look. Cheers, Scream.
Igor4U Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 (edited) I think 4K's beauty lies in being able to populate a Big Display (30 Inch +) with a density of pixels for a Great Picture (while sitting close as in flying flight sims). Not sure why anyone would buy a 4K monitor under 30 inches diagonal. Can you imagine how big your Text would be (Windows doesn't scale well yet), you'd need a magnifying glass to read your menus. And until Flight Sims take advantage of horsepower provided by Crossfire and SLI, running 4K would sacrifice frame rate or eye-candy. Maybe when Nvidia cranks out a 20nm fab Maxwell GTX 980 Ti with 6/8GB VRAM, then a Single GPU might have enough muscle for 4K !
