I use FreeTrack. I did it well, and it is wonderful device. Cheap, easy to make and is almost useable as TrackIR.

Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D

ED will not support FreeTrack in the western release of DCS:BS so I think he want to know how much other people use FreeTrack instead of TIR4.

I use, btw, TIR4 and I'm very happy with it.

I had a Trackir 4 but the base broke off and I had to use blu tack to hold it in place. It ran really hot and I wasn't surprised when it finally died just outside of warranty.

I've had trackir4 for a few years now. If it doesn't work, then I don't play. It's become more important to me than my joystick profiles. Fortunately, I've never had a problem and it works as well today as it did when I first got it. Absolutely essential for gameplay. Can't emphasize enough how much I depend on it.

Well it's not the same unless your using an IR LED expansion for FreeTrack. I play in low light conditions with a 27" monitor in my face. The ambient light is dark but the light from the monitor (which doubles up as a search light it's that bright) is ever changing with the game. Not the best conditions for picking up movement.

If you do have the IR expansion...then you have more free time than me.

Also doesn't FreeTrack run at 30fps/hz (which ever one it is) where TiR runs at 120fps/hz (which ever one it is)?

Oh and I have TiR4 + expansion.

with freetrack you have to make or buy a tracker, so why not getting/making a tracker with IR leds straight away?

most webcams that are tested with Freetrack provide 30 fps, altough on different resolutions. What really seems to be a good improvement, and putting Freetrack on par with TrackIR, is using a Wii mote instead of a webcam. Gives almost no CPU usage and solid 100FPS... :D

So for people like me, without lots of money to spend on their favorite hobby, Freetrack is really a good alternative to TrackIR

MSI 870A-G54, AMD Phenom II X2 555 @Phenom II X4 B55 BE, 3.2 GHz quad-core, Asus EAH4870 DK/HTDI/512MD5, OCZ Gold Edition DDR3 1333MHz 4GB Kit Low-Voltage. Budget = Cheap = Good :D

Well this raises a good point - what have you paid for exactly vs what did you get?

To get 6DOF head tracking you need the hardware and software to make that happen. Importantly in the game/sim itself you need the relevant software (the newinput.dll) to get it working.

NP provide libraries and code to devs so that they can easily get 6DOF head tracking support in their game. When someone buys a TrackIR they're getting the hardware and user software and also implicitly paying for the libraries which have been incorporated into the games themselves.

When you use FreeTrack you get the client software for free, buy a webcam but.... what software is getting used in the game itself? Well it's NPs software - and you're not paying for that.

So ultimately using FreeTrack is leeching off of NP and their legitimate customers who are subsidising your use. If those others hadn't paid, FreeTrack in its current form wouldn't work.

FreeTrack should not be using NP code and instead develop and market their own (or pay a royalty to NP for using their code) - if they'll do that and provide it to devs and still not charge, then that would be great and I bet ED would be all over it and NP would be in trouble.

In the meantime, FreeTrack is denying revenue to NP which has created a market - if it weren't for NP we wouldn't be where we are today in terms of support for 6DOF.

So, the cost of TrackIR is high, but I think probably half of that charge can be put down as software licensing for the code already integrated into games/sims and in that context, the costs are not so bad (just look at the list of supported games - all of those use NPs software).

So, if we really want to talk about competition, it's up to FreeTrack (or someone else) to do *all* the work, not piggy back on the legitimate work of NaturalPoint as is currently the case.

So if there wouldn't be Microsoft ppl still wouldn't have OS?

If Wright Brothers wouldn't flew in air ppl still would use car than flights?

Of course not. If not NP, somebody else, if not Wirght, Microsoft ect. there will be always somebody else...

I use FT and have stable 30 FPS. 30 frames is already full smooth image, as I heard and read above human eye can't spot better feelings or I name it "smoother"...

I like FT - I'm not against NP but I don't like monopoly. When I was deciding what to get - build FT or buy TiR I chose FT due of really low costs. And this is most important to me.

One is sure - monopoly is bad. Everywhere. Hope there will be full support of 3rd hardware.
