Every pit needs a comfortable chair for extended sessions. Racing/bucket seats are about £150-200 on e-bay so I thought I'd start a thread where people can post suggestions for used car seats they've found that fit the bill and be cheaper. Obviously some seats are better padded or more supportive than others and there's so many choices, it will help if we can narrow it down a bit.

All the used car parts sites I've looked at force you to enter the make/model, etc before they'll show you what parts they have, so we need to know what we're looking for. I tried looking on e-bay but just got pages of baby/child seats!

I'm in the UK myself, so probably won't be able to find any US makes that people might recommend but others might find the information useful, so don't let that put you off sharing :)

You can have one my seats from my clapped out panda if you want...

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

I'm not sure if you're serious but if you are, thanks but I'm not really ready for one yet. I've got a lot of decorating, laying flooring, etc to do in my flat and I've got enough clutter that I'm not looking forward to moving as it is, so I can't really add any more until I've finished.

TBH, if I Build a Pit this summer (like I plan too) for my Racing/Flying needs>

I'm stealing the back seat out of the minivan that hasnt moved in 4 years.

Pop 2 floor clamps, lift it up off the floor mounts, build new mounts out of wood, set it in pit, clamp down.

Seat with arm rests that rotate on both sides, headrest moves up and down, seat back rotates and can actually fold all the way down for storage purposes :) , and the seat itself moves about 18 inches on rails forward and back.

OP, you may want to buy a Honda Civic seat (1999-2004) seat if available. Just post how you do the modifications for mounts etc.. I'm also interested in your thread cuz my desk position is tiring and I want a compatible seat (not a play-not so cheap-seat)..

Thanks for the tip, I'll keep an eye out for one of those.

I'm thinking of having it on rails so that it can be slid back to make it easier to get into the pit. I saw a thread whilst browsing earlier where someone's already done that (sorry, I forget who it was) so it's not my brilliant idea ;)

Most car seats slid back and forth on rails anyway, so I might even be able to re-use those.

Yeah, I feel you about sitting at the desk being tiring. I find myself sitting there far too much as it is (mostly working out how to setup software/hardware for the sim) and I need somewhere more comfortable and relaxing when I want to play, even if I wasn't planning on building a pit.

Looks very cool, it's got a sort of modern/industrial look going on. I'm not sure it's padded enough for my liking though. I also should mention I tend to play helos, so I'll need the stick between my legs and might even need to cut a notch in the front of the chair, so I'll probably need something more fabric and less metal/leather.

I've got the A10C as well though, so I may well sit a separate stick and throttle at the sides for that, although the TM Warthog might be the easiest stick to modify with an extension and I won't be buying two of them!

I would suggest going to some 'wreckers yards', wander around and look 'till you see something suitable... then 'barter' and remove! It would be cheap and you can 'test' the seat before removing it.

Personally, I went the full Monty and bought a new racing seat... expensive (400.00 usd), yes, but I haven't regretted it for a moment!

Hi Doveman,

I went to a few car scrap yards and I have got....what is for me a perfect seat.

It is a passenger seat, because that is the seat least used, from a people carrier. I think it was a Citroen Picassa. It even has a fold up arm rest....great for stabilising my joystick arm and swivels.

I mounted it rails and all on concrete building block with some wood and bolts.

If you are interested I can give you more details.

Regards

Thanks for the tip Trubshaw. I'll try scavenging when I have time.

I don't know if it would be a good idea to use concrete building blocks in my flat though, I'm not sure how much weight the floor will support in one place!

I'd be interested to see some pictures/details though.

Thanks Pick, looks cool and nice station you've got there. I can't afford to spend that much on a seat though unfortunately, so I'll have to scavenge and barter as you suggest.

There's a few bargains on there, although most are around £195. As I mentioned, I might need a fabric rather than leather seat so that I can cut a notch for the stick in the front but maybe leather's no harder to cut than fabric, I'm no expert.
