OK, now that I have you attention, fess up:

Who read Starforce? :P

Back on topic, those old timers that remember will recall the epic rages of some in 'those' days past. Trust me when I tell you that that rage has NOTHING on the tantrum my father-in-law threw when he updated to Win 8.1 and realised that said update ate his Apps!

Long story short:

After updating, Apps will not start/run at all. Also cannot access App store. At first he was getting an error that there was no internet connection (which there obviously was - I checked). That seemed to resolve itself - no error atm, Apps just fail to load/start.

Any ideas?

I googled the issue, but am confronted with a wall of textspeak/registry hacks etc etc and don't want to fiddle too much.

How? Why? When? Where?

Seriously though, one would expect that they would be running by default. In any event, I don't know and he certainly will not know of any required services, never mind how to get them running/check on them.

Your FIL was up and running file on W8.0.. And updated to 8.1 and it went FUBAR?

Did he do/install ANYTHING else? Was he running a virusscanner? etc..

WTF is a FIL?

Yep - everything was fine until the update to 8.1. Nothing else installed, no. Just windows defender et al - no third-party virus software.

Didn't "read" StarForce, but guilty of assuming that that was a mispelling. :P

Simple solution. Get windows 7 and wait for something better than windows 8. Exactly what most of us did with windows vista. If you had asked me questions about windows vista I would not be able to answer that either because i only had it installed on my computer for about ten minutes before I decided to go back to xp and wait for something better. If windows follows their age old trend, the next os should be good, but the one after that will be garbage again. They dont listen to us, they burn their fingers, they turn around and listen to us. Next go they think they know better again, burn fingers again, and then are forced to listen to the people who know!!

Had that happen on one of the machines that I updated to 8.1. "Solved" by formatting and installing 8.1 from scratch.
