SkateZilla
i have genuine windows 7 licenses, so I will update all my rigs to Win10. I'll either Update my Win10 Tech Preview to Retail and use one of my unused Licenses, or Upgrade my Win 7 on my main rig to 10 and re-install windows, at this point I'd like to keep win7 I have now in tact, if Win10 allows it, then fine, if not I'll upgrade my TP to RTM and use one of my unused Windows7 Licenses to authenticate. Windows 8 was $39 for a while when first released, If you Update to Windows 10 within the first 12 Months after release you receive the license for free. Basically, MS, Wants as many users to move to Win10 as many as possible as soon as possible, the more users on one platform, the easier it is to develop/support products for them. PoleCat
I popped in a couple of spare 120GB SSD's, configured a Raid 0 array and installed Windows X on my machine. (Had been testing it only under VM until now). I really like the new start menu and the much better balance struck between mobile and fixed workstation computing. The best of both worlds and very easy to switch between the two. I agree with SkateZilla's comments. I have found nothing that will not run so far. Clearly MS has addressed a lot of the shortcomings of Windows 8 both real and perceived with this new OS. Good stuff. Python
I like windows 7, but I'm having a few niggling problems lately such as programs not showing up in control panel to uninstall them. That and my main SSD which contins windows and DCS is pretty much full. I'm thinking I might wait for this, get a new 1TB SSD as my main drive and start fresh. Dudikoff
at this point I'd like to keep win7 I have now in tact, if Win10 allows it, then fine, if not I'll upgrade my TP to RTM and use one of my unused Windows7 Licenses to authenticate. Windows 8 was $39 for a while when first released, I got the impression that the only way they offer to upgrade is to actually upgrade from within the Windows 7 installation which would not let you keep your existing Windows 7 installation as it will get upgraded (but you can clone your Windows 7 installation to another drive). But, I don't know if they'll provide a Windows 10 key after the upgrade which you could then use to reinstall Windows 10 from scratch? I should hope so. Regarding the Windows 8 price, I think there was an even cheaper upgrade program from Windows 7 for like $20 during the three month promotional period (I applied for it, but then didn't proceed with it). Beta testers for MS can upgrade the beta/previews to the release version and use a windows 7 license to authenticate. Which is what I'll prolly do as I have a lot of expensive software that does react nicely to big changes to the O/S. Not sure if you can run both Win7 and 10 with the same license. Be cool if you can though. I'll likely keep ky Win10 Install on a USB 3 memory stick, once my SSD and 128GB stick get her I'll clone Win7 to the SSD and clone Win 10 to the 128 gb stick, as its actually faster than my WD Black drives. And set boot seq. To check USB3 first, is I boot with Drive plugged in it will goto W10, if not to win7. asparagin
I heard that the free upgrading from win 7 or 8 to win 10 will only work for the hardware configuration during upgrade. SkateZilla
How about retail versions? I don´t care about OEM. Boxed retail versions differ based on version (HomeBasic, HomePremium, Pro, Ultimate, Enterprise, etc) OEM, Limited Support (ie Support is provided by the PC Manufacturer), License is attached to the Hardware. Retail, Support from Microsoft, Can be moved from one ayatem to another but will only activate on one at a time. VLK, Volume License Keys, Support from MS, one key is bought and used on a lot of systems, limited to businesses. If you have a Retail Win7/8 license, you'll get a retail Win10 license. oem gets oem, vlk gets vlk Edited June 1, 2015 by SkateZilla Windows 10 Pro, Ryzen 2700X @ 4.6Ghz, 32GB DDR4-3200 GSkill (F4-3200C16D-16GTZR x2), ASRock X470 Taichi Ultimate, XFX RX6800XT Merc 310 (RX-68XTALFD9) 3x ASUS VS248HP + Oculus HMD, Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS + MFDs
